I’m so Impressed by your love and dedication towards the super duke going as far as to developing high-end super useful products that full on race teams would be proud of and using. Great job! Glad you’re a part of the SDR community.
First of all big complements how you make things so simple to understand. Everything you say resonates big time and ….what felt wrong on track all my life… you pretty addressed them all. You hit the nail on the head with many things, but especially this tripple clamp video. In 2006, I changed a tripple clamp on my ZX12, because I encountered the exact same problem. And yes I know it’s a 1200 cc, so what can you expect. I had increased the rear hight, preload, stiffer springs, lowered the front to such an extent that I almost F…-up the entire geometry of my bike. And still I was fighting to the get the bike closer to the apex and as you said get off the the throttle every time i missed it. I was fighting and forcing the bike and it was draining all my energy. Until I charged the tripple clamp because it looked cool, and ohh yes I could also change the off-set with a couple of mm’s 🤔 I swapped the clamp and increased the off-set with 2mm, based on Zero theoretical knowledge at that time. It was just a trial, but the effect it had on the handling of the bike was surreal and it felt like I was riding a 600cc. The bike attacked and wanted to eat every single corner. I nailed every single apex and whilst cornering, I was able to chose a different line and never run wide again. Again the experience was surreal and made me feel that there were no limits anymore. Until I exceed the law of physics and found myself hanging 3 meters above the asphalt trying to figure out which part of my body I wanted to sacrifice to minimize the collateral damage. I broke an ankle, a vinger and my Ego, which was way too big at that moment anyway I now have an HP4, and encounter the exact same problem again. I am fighting the corners, and this may be due to my lengt and weight (which shifts the load to the back), and where it makes sense to increase your off-set / shorten your trail? So now I have seen your video, in which I find the confirmation of what I have felt 16 years ago, I am going to treat my HP4 with a racing tripple clamp and this time respect the law of physics. I will share the outcome later with you. I love your videos and they really help me, because I also ask myself these questions like “But Why”. I need to see it and feel it in order to understand it and find proof. Just another old guy, still trying and beating the youngsters 😂
I always learn from your videos from Japan. I only understand a little English, but what you want to tell everyone is translated by my SDR on Blacktop. So I have ordered the Super clamps! Looking forward to its arrival!
I should have them here to ship out in 2 weeks time. Pretty exciting times. FYI, I think you can click on subtitles and choose language? Not 100% sure on that.
Recently discovered this channel. Im hooked. Im starting to fall in love with the 1290 sdr even though i dont even own one yet. 😅 I think I m gonna but the only Frenchy with an amzing track ready beast in Paris 😂. I guess I'm gonna get an SDR sooner than I thought haha. I respect the Love and the precision you re sharing with us. 🙏🏾
Sorry for being one the few who are concerned about my clean streetbike! Really looking forward to the clamp - love that there's some serious race team bits for our bikes!
No apologies necessary. I appreciate your perspective. You are helping make the Superclamp better than it would have been otherwise. That's how the world is meant to work - we learn from different opinions than our own.
Definitely looking forward to these clamps and I'm always looking to learn more. Anything you're willing to share I will definitely add to my knowledge base.
The greatest thing about this and props to KTM too is that they are a bit lazy about redesigning their bikes and so this will likely fit all 1290 dukes from Gen 1 onwards, including the SDGT and maybe, maaaybe even the 1290 SAs
I haven't tried bolting one to a previous generation yet, but I feel like you do - it'll probably fit. The differences will be in trivial differences like headlight mounts, etc.
I have to say you talk a very relaxed game so you must completely change for the track into aggressive mode, i wish i could take my SDR on Laguna, just a dream, Scotland is pretty wet and cold most of the year, when younger i played play station and raced that track many times and its amazing how realistic it was, i know it back to front
Another great video and I think I need the Superclamp in my life with my recent decision to turn the RR into a dedicated track-bike. You really have to stop riding in the novice/slow group during track-days though, taking the piss! 🥴
Great video as usual bro. And I’m learning more than you surely would think 🤗 Good news 1 the clamp will be ready for next season. Good news 2 you’ll have plenty of time during the winter for some more educational videos . That will definitely help until spring 😂
Great video Eric. I’ve only just fitted my SportLink and not ridden with it yet - hopefully the roads will be dry by Sunday 🤞 I’m glad you noted the benefit of the triple clamp for the vertically challenged as 10mm higher is probably enough for me 😂 Will it be possible to adjust the triple clamps without having to completely disassemble and reassemble them on the bike? A video on how to fit them would be awesome as would your riding tips 😊
Yes actually. And this is an excellent question to ask. I personally designed and machined on my lathe, a unique design steering stem that supports the lower bearing with an extrusion that now exists ABOVE the lower triple clamp. So yes, we will be able to change inserts without taking the whole front end off. Theoretically we will be able to loosen the pinch bolts and slide one insert out, slide the next insert in, and off we go. My thinking is, what good are adjustable offset triple clamps if they are so hard to "adjust" that nobody ever adjusts them... So this unique design element will solve that potential issue. Great question
Yes 100% you can. I misspoke in the video at one part when I said "The only way to adjust trail is the rear." My mistake, that was all off the cuff. The thing is, 5mm at the forks = 1mm of trail adjustment, up or down. 5mm at the shock = 10mm above the axle, which is 2.5mm of trail. Plus by adding shock length, or a link, to the rear, you also get the benefits of better swingarm angle, better drives, more stability. I should not have said the "only way". I should have said the "better way". My error, good call
@BujinkanYeoDojo the other reason I prefer to NOT remove trail by lowering the front end, or sliding the forks up into the triple clamps, is because lowering the front of the bike flattens the swingarm. It reduces swingarm angle, which reduces anti-squat, which we need on SDRs particularly, to get better drives.
For me, the bike goes where I want when I need it to the most effectively and cooperatively when this SDR has it's trail around 101mm. No matter how fast I am going. It's a mechanical thing for me, more than a feel thing. Like it either goes left like I'm asking it to, or it doesn't. And the more trail it has the more it doesn't. But up or down in trail is all relative to what your baseline is. Also trail is related to spring rate, and valving. Because trail is measured with the bike off the ground, forks and swingarm fully extended. So a bike with stiff springs front or rear, vs a bike with soft springs front or rear, with the same rider on it, will have different trail numbers once its on the ground. Which brings us back to your point - fast vs mega fast riders might go up or down depending on preference. But that preference is so deep in the details of so many other variables that the baseline is basically lost in the sauce. Make sense?
@@superduked33 i mean yeah I'm probably trying to say something similar. Noticed pro level guys really going extreme with fork extensions etc probably as they change the trail dramatically by braking so hard and at steeper lean angles. Trail will reduce with bike on its side. For inexperienced guys a very responsive bike may feel twitchy and nervous and they may lose the front mid corner from being stiff on the bike.
great video gogo... can't wait til you have the gen 1 set on sale.... yes I would be interested in those video subject you were talking about. got a little question... when you raced the gen 1 and 2 did you used the stock handle bars? oh and is that a thumb brake set up on that bike?
Wow that's impressive. I doubted anyone would notice the thumb brake.. Nice work. So far its only there "mostly". Doesn't work yet as I have to navigate check valves and keeping the foot lever too and of course ABS because I am the only idiot out there using it.. But I keep saying I'll listen to anyone suggesting I disconnect ABS as soon as they pass me on the brakes.. No I used Pro Taper bars back then. But so far I am still stock on the Gen3.
@superduked33 I've actually been looking thumb brake that will work with this bike, lol but not a high priority, back in the day I was a mechanic on for a team, so I notice some some stuff, but that was quite a few yrs ago, and I'm no longer in that career field but still into motorcycles. I really appreciate your videos because I've only had my '16 superduke for about 6 months now. I plan on getting back to track day riding ( I haven't been racing since '04) with this bike and my ducati 1098... thank you for all the info you put out there. Believe me, it's helpful.
@@shanemartinson5006 Check out the racetorx thumb brake? He seems to also be a KTM/ SDR guy so I imagine he's thought of the specifics (or limitations)
@darinjlee I believe that was the one I was thinking about going with, think it's the one I saw installed on a smcr build on another channel, thank you I'll have to check that one out again
Hey GoGo would love to watch/listen to some of your riding input and methodology. Have you ever thought about getting an insta 360? So we can see your body positioning and angles when you ride. Thanks!
Great idea. I have one actually. May be testing again in November. If so I'll use it there. Very physical track, would be a good place to use as an example
I use the Hyperpro damper. They have a linear damper and a progressive one. I use the linear one. Excellent range of adjustment - from not enough to too much and lots of steps between. Highly recommended and I paid full retail.. :-)
I will have to investigate whether it fits a GT or not. I imagine mechanically it will fit, as the bikes are very similar. The trick will be mounting places for the headlight and cosmetics.
I'm not sure exactly what it was, cars or trucks, but there are places where the pavement has torn away from itself and left shallow "potholes" like back in NY mid winter
The Superclamp is ALL that I have been working on morning to night for the past week. Marathon project. Steering stops are now designed and tested. Last thing I did was measure headlight fitment, because of course I don't use a headlight so it's been on the bottom of my priorities list. ...and of course the placement of the perches for the plastic upper headlight bracket were 5mm off. So I edited the drawings accordingly and ordered what I hope to God is the last, last prototype. It will be done Tuesday of next week. Then I fit it, test the headlight fitment, and we are good to go.
OEM bars. I've run Spiegler straighter bars, bent bars, my buddy tried clip-ons, but I'm back to OEM bars. Would like something with a bit more bend but haven't found it yet
It's a good question, point you bring up. Maybe offering them as an option can help keep costs down. Although the stops will be removable - they'll simple be oval discs that fasten with one "breakable" bolt.

There is a quiz on the links page that helps you choose which link might suit you best. It works pretty decent but it's about to get even better.
Seems like confident and fast riders like their trail a bit shorter whereas mega fast guys then go up again in trail?
