I don't understand, in 2024, making a 250€ radio witch mute on each step when you tune it. It's really something they have to upgrade.
This is why reviews are good thing, thanks for your sharing !

Nothing worse than rupturing your eardrum because of a very loud signal suddenly...

They can change the tuning mute but the poor audio quality on SSB and poor ECSS quality is a fundamental flaw in all these DSP radios/Chips and can not and has not yet been solved and one reason I have sold all but 1 of my DSP radios and do not ever intend to buy another.
There are only 2 portable radios out there with the audio Quality on SSB that you can still buy new today such as the Tecsun PL-680, it offers the best available ECSS performance that blows away any DSP radios using just filters alone.
The PL-680 and a good receiving antenna such as the Bonito MA305 and you have one of the best receiving stations possible today from a portable radio.
The Sangean ATS-909 x2 is probably the only DSP radio that offers excellent audio quality and good ECSS performance.
For the money, nothing beats the PL-680 without DSP or fancy screens it's the best out there and I wish manufacturers stopped producing DSP rubbish because it only offers cheaper radios to the manufacturer and more expensive radios to the buyer nothing more.

Basically these Chinese companies all milk the same small group of least-cost radio-on-a-chip ICs (formerly known as Silicon Labs Si473x) for at least 10 years now. They present "new" radios based on these chips almost every year and meanwhile there seems to be some competition going on who can flesh out the design the most but basically they're all some iteration of same old, same old. The only (very) fundamentally different design in the low-cost RX segment, playing in a whole different performance league is from Belarus (Belka).

    • @o00scorpion00o
      @o00scorpion00o 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@gerdpfeil Yes, there's not much effort put into circuit design, they don't need coils and don't have to tune up everything using a chip.
As I said, very hard to beat the Tecsun PL-680 and it's a pity they don't improve on their analogue radios but that's not going to happen
The belka is exceptional only it's not a nice radio to use, so I don't use it and only used it briefly, I should have sold it. If it was in a larger box with buttons and knobs I'd be a lot happier. There's just no enjoyment in using it like I get from a real radio.

What a pity of radio! 1KHz soft-muting overshadows all its good qualities like their magnific audio, antenna matchings,. filter settings, backlight keys... The developer should have to had realize of it, because scanning the bands without muting is a must for any radio worth its salt. specially in a medium-high price range .. If the manufacturer corrected it, it would be a radio to take into account., Thanks Paul for this complete review! 73s, Pedro.

Paul I received mine last week from Radioddity like the radio but hope for both a manual and firmware update that will null the soft mute tuning and give me the ability to use any démod mode in any band like my Belka (All mode) also the ability to access all Eq bands on AM mode not just WBFM.
I love the backlight keyboard as I tend to use mind outside at night. Why they skipped the 160M band is a head scratcher.
Well enough with the gripes once I found out how to set-up my MW antenna, plus use the LNA and band pass filters something the manual needs an improvement on it started to impress me on MW, and now SW on I figured what setting to choose, besides Default Antenna settings. I still haven’t really tested on VHF/UHF bands except WBFM (broadcast) were it is very good. Well this is not a turn on a play radio, it is a radio one needs to read and understand the manual radio to challenge my tired old brain ….😊!
    73! Have a great day!

No firmware upgrade will remove the soft muting, that seems to be an inherent limitation of the 47xx radio chips if not paired with external VFOs like some of the Tecsuns. Like most of those radios it doesn't mute in fine-tuning mode tho.

It looks amazing, but from your video, I think it isn't worth the money. For this price, you can get new Malahite, Belka, and Tecsun radios, which are more refined, have no audio cut-out, have a better encoder, etc. Also at first it looks rugged, but there isn't any IP protection from water or dust, so this ruggedness is just eye candy. The tuning encoder looks loose too, not as sturdy as an Icom's.
In the case of functionality, that's amazing. Maybe the next one with a decent encoder and without this cut-out will be better.
But last but not least, I'm happy, that the SWL world gets new RIGs and isn't so forgotten as the shortwave broadcast bands.

They really packed a lot into this radio. It's impressive. A question for you: Does it allow stepping in 5KHz steps in SSB mode? The VFO change muting is a "problem" with all of these new generation SSB radios, because of the IC they all use. But stepping in 5Khz jumps makes it less painful for signal hunting. (I can do this on my CountyComm GP7 which shares much of the same HF /SSB design.).

Quite a good radio but dont think its worth the price point it currently sits at. There are other versions of this radio floating around with different badges. You tune to 624 khz is there a station there and not on 621khz or were you off-channel?

The tuning knobs look like deal breakers. They need to be mechanically solid and to use optical encoders. Also the sensitivity on SSB does not look good - 20μV compared to 0.20 μV on an IC-705.

Tuning knob is cheaply made. Very first thing that I'd evaluate is what you use the most - tuning knob is wobbly and going up and down like at 6:10 - simply said it's just a general use low quality encoder and the whole radio tuning experience depends on it - it seems like a low grade under $80 attempt to create something to sell with not much of a will to progress above today's level of modern design. Completely agree with someone earlier mentioned Malahit that it can not be even compared. The only design feature is the second screen - which is not enough of a reason to get into such high price range and tuning handle which should be either optical or specially quality made, with bearings and no play,

  • @PetrJanasek

The RF919 is just an overpriced noisemaker with a lot of unnecessary functions with a fair weight and, on the contrary, with a number of functions necessary for a real communication receiver. Unfortunately, in fact, like the vast majority of so-called DSP-receivers. If someone says that the RF919 is a good DX-receiver, then they have never had a real communication receiver (ICOM IC-R75, AOR AR 7030, Fairhaven RD500, .) in their hands! Among other things, he completely lacks a proper S-meter, on MW, LW he can't do SSB for NDB hunting, etc., etc.! For the doubters, I state that I have owned a whole range of DSP-SDR receivers for many years, starting with the Perseus SDR via AirPlay and ending with the R820T (among many others) as well as all the above receivers...73 de OK1XPJ
