I have one of the original DSP 1's, the NR on the older model is equally as good as far as I've experienced. Malahit (and their knockoffs) have amazing noise reduction ability, only bettered by connecting to the PC and adding more tweaked noise reduction.

I have a non-licensed version, the Malhahit V3 and its noise reduction is also great, and so is its noise blanker. In fact, the only radio I have with a noise blanker as good as the Malahit V3 is an old Icom IC-R71A and a Yaesu FTdx- 3000. As for the noise reducion, none are as good, even the FTDx-3000.

Some things to remember when dealing with China and other clones: You must have the seller state what FW version (such as 1.10d or 2.40...etc) it has and ask if it is legal/upgradeable. DSP-2 receivers for those who are not aware, are the LAST model of the receiver using Russian-originated software. The actual Russian Malahit receivers are now at the DSP-3 model, with some significant improvements, including apparently changes to reduce noise from the screen. But ordering direct from Russia remains a challenge at this point. Chinese clone makers have done a very good job of adapting the Russian software to various designs and this is the latest one. The problem with all of these is that there are so many options available in the software for signal processing, such as PREAMP and other settings, that for listening to today's SW broadcasts, you're almost better off using a Tecsun 330 or 990 or H-501. Some people are confusing the MODEL of the receiver (DSP-2 for example) with the firmware (i.e. 1.10d). You're quite correct that build quality on this appears to be substantially better than other units online. And there are TWO antenna inputs which is a good thing, like the old V3 SDR which is still shown as being available online.

I've checked the Malachite Team website for the newer DSP3 and... got a bit frustrated. DSP3 is just DSP2 with (welcomed) incremental improvements: faster UI, less internal noise, USB-C connector.
I was hoping they already had for selling the DDC version. The DDC prototype was very promising, with several MHz of visible and IQ bandwidth and no-gap coverage.

I just received mine two days ago, exact same one from Deepelec! Yesterday I made a video about how to upgrade the firmware to the latest 2.40 beta that adds FT8 and RTTY decoding. I was just thinking, it would be great if Tech Minds gets his hands on this model and makes a good video covering it, as there are not many videos on TH-cam about it! Well... guess you got one then haha! Amazing SDR receiver, great build quality!

@@andynew2 Well I've seen easier methods for sure, but at least it is possible and explained well enough, so it's still a good thing in my book. The thing to be really careful about is to use the correct firmware file, as it can and probably will differ from clone to clone and also different from the original Malahit from Russia.

I just got mine all the way from China. Took almost a month to get to the United States (Utah). I will say already that it is very good for the money! The only thing is all the birdies it generates but it doesn't generate any more than and other synthesized rig, really. Takes a day or two to figure out how to make use of it and optimize it for various bands. For example, the settings you might need to get good reception on AM (MW) would be a bit different than for the nearby shortwave (HF) bands. And VHF and UHF and broadcast FM music stations, all have their optimum settings you will have to fiddle with. I was amazed when I listened to my local AM station on 570 (KNRS in Salt Lake City) at night and could hear another station on 570 (co-channel interference) somewhere else in the USA. But with the Attenuation setting, I took the attenuation all the way up to 20 or so and got rid of the distant station entirely, as my local station was still very strong at 20 db Attenuation, whereas the distant station was no longer receivable. Very versatile and capable little rig! Lots of ways to clear up interference. I've never had a receiver (until now) sensitive enough to get that other 570KHz station from far away, so that says a lot. I only have good AM and SW reception with a High-Z antenna, which I happened to have and put to good use (Airspy YouLoop). Seems like anything below 30 Mhz needs a High Z but I have not tried a lot of other antennas yet so take that with a grain of salt at this point. I just got it the other day. The signal to noise ratio on civilian aircraft (118 to 137 mHz) and military aircraft (225 to 380mHz) is really good, better than my half dozen other radios that have those bands, including my Uniden SDS200. Good S/N ratio on weak air band signals is good to have. Also ham sounds great from HF SSB up the UHF.

When using the Hi-Z setting on this 2023 version, I can barely hear anythin at all. On the 50-Ohm setting with the telescopic antenna, it’s better, but still doesn’t pick up as much as the original DSP2. Listening on 40 meters today, the Russian DSP2 picked up tons of signals, but the 2023 clone only got a few of the strongest ones. Maybe I got a dud or something?

I reached the conclusion that the only good portable self-contained SDR SW receiver for less than a grand was a transceiver in terms of being able to quickly tune and get to where you want to listen. I have an older Malahit which is kind of usable, apart from the gummy tuning knob that goes backwards almost as much as it goes in the intended direction, but I can’t see the screen outdoors, even when it’s cloudy. The interesting thing from this clip was the comment the person made on the airwaves @05:56 the decommissioning of 3G mobile phone signal. As a Blackberry curve user I will lose my internet since only 4/5G will be available. I believe that they will fall back to 2G for only voice and text. So that was a very interesting catch on the airwaves.

Can this unit scan? Can it record frequencies (either built in or to a separate recorder via headphone jack)? Is there any video output (for displaying on a larger monitor when at home)?

Get an SDRPlay RSPdx and invest in a good all band antenna and lmr400 cable to converter with ground and lightening protection. It does everything and is the core of any station for receiving. Chinesium radios are never worth 300 bucks, EVER! They hate us and use junk to build gear.

I am very intersted in this, I have 1 question though. How hard is it to change the battery. Sooner or later the rechargeable battery is going to die, and if I am dropping over 300 bucks on a radio, I want to make sure it doesnt become a paper wieght when the battery dies

Looks and sounds absolutely awesome, but as someone who runs a contest station I know that it's not all that hard to flip the dial and find stations that are loud and sound fantastic, especially when the Solar Cycle is as good as it is now. And yes there are lots of JA stations that have stacked Mono Banders that can throw a 59+ signal on the higher bands in the Morning or near sunset all the way to the East Coast of the USA.
What I would have liked to have seen is an A/B comparison of a weak station on the DSP2 versus any of the normal ham radio transceivers. I have used lots of different radios so that could provide a pretty good reference point as to how well this thing is really receiving.
BTW if I sound a bit wary it's because I saw your video and was really excited, up until the point when I read the reviews on Amazon for the Previous version. Now I need some real comparative proof of how it compares to something like my Icom 7610.
Not an unfair request considering this cost half the price of a full blown transceiver like the Icom 7300.
Note, I am not asking you to do it, but the company needs to get someone to do it.

Can you adjust the tuning step(s)? The display seems to show ".000" most of the time. (Similar question for bandwidth, especially for the 30 MHz and below frequencies.)

    • @dave10524
      @dave10524 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Tuning steps are adjustable, the steps are different depending on the mode you are in. There are 3 presets for bandwidth and you can adjust the width for each setting
