I’ve been around dogs all my life. But I never understood them until I received a golden retriever and a year later I came down with multiple sclerosis and was pretty much bed ridden for 8 months. His daily walks through the woods was gone and emotionally he took a big hit as I did. During the 8th month he sprang into action. Every morning between 7-7:30 he would come into my room and just start poking me with his big nose and irritating me to no end. So I started getting up and into my wheelchair and going out on the porch with him, then that wasn’t good enough. Them small trips started getting further and further. Well I’m no longer in a wheelchair, I do walk with a bad limp. Have to sit regularly but where would I be if my puppy dog not irritated me into complete motivation to get up and moving. He accomplished what several doctors, psychiatrist and medication couldn’t ! I am no trainer but my biggest message to people wanting to get the best out of their dogs, instead of trying to teach and train all the time, listen and learn from them as well. They are without doubt the best friends among us !

This is an awesome channel! I literally got a young pup off the streets. Vaccinated him and he gets two walks a day and travels everywhere I go. I’ll use this channel as a “go to” to educate myself as a new dog dad 👍🏼

Thank you for the episode! I currently live in Thailand and rescued a dog, who was someone's dog for several years (ever since he was a puppy) then the family left for their home country and threw him out on the street. He needed to learn how to survive and communicate with street dogs. Now, when I got him, I learned that he is male dog reactive. And I am so happy that you mentioned Thailand and other countries, where a dog's behavior is different but also people's expectations of a dog are different. Now, since there is a lack of quality trainers on the island where I live (none really), I have to educate myself and see how I can help my dog with boundaries. So podcasts like yours are definitely helpful!

around the 17/18 minute mark they talk about happiness is still there for the dog when you lessen the excitement - i TOTALLY agree just based on my own experience of those emotions. For me if someone can calm me down when im happy & overly excited, it's the best feeling instead of my energy jumping all over the place out of my control. I enjoy the happiness in a way that feels safer, I imagine the dog can appreciate it too. I learn a lot from this!

I am so so glad I found this channel. As a new puppy owner (after having small dogs as a child), I just was not getting anywhere with other TH-cam Training videos. My mini schnauzer of 6 months was aggressive and my husband was increasingly uneasy about keeping her while caring for a newborn. Not only do I feel like I learned a lot in 42 minutes, I have already made gains intuitively in our relationship. Automatic subscribe, thank you so much while I binge the rest!

Brilliant analogies between dogs and humans ... makes so much sense. I'm a frustrated chihuahua and cavoodle owner. My little Chilli Chihuahua is awesome but doesn't always listen and is 2 years old and we've recently introduced a Cavoodle puppy 8 months old who just chews everything and is a quick learner but it's so over excited and is stressing out our little Chilli. I'm looking forward to getting some tips to calm all this down.

I'm a farrier and my dog (or dogs) come to work with me, so I spend a lot of time in them. I have always had a fascination with how dogs see the world and how that can help with my bond with them. I expect my dogs to behave, but I am a partner with my dogs not a dictator. The vast majority of the videos I've seen online completely misunderstand dogs, usually because of looking through an anthropomorphism lens. After listening to your video I believe you have a lot of balance and understanding of how to have a healthy and rewarding relationship with man's best friend. Thanks for the post I enjoyed it. It is refreshing to see others that put our relationship with dogs in the right perspective.

    • @johnmobley9369
      @johnmobley9369 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@Todd Thompson Not everybody hears things at the same levels and you shouldn’t assume that someone’s going to hear something the same amount as you do just because they’re your age or for you to make fun of anyone in the way that you did. Maybe they just don’t realize they need better speakers or there’s something wrong with their volume on whatever device or maybe the device that they have just has different audio quality for whatever reason. Regardless they were just giving constructive criticism and you stepped way out of bounds for no reason.

@Dog Psychology...you guys are awesome. I realize that the humans, (really referring to myself tbh) are the problem when it comes on to human dog relationship, though at the same time we are the potential solution. Don't know if you guys have made a vide specifically pertaining to how to react to dogs behaviour and around them to build that level of understanding between both pet and owner, but I would like some deep knowledge on. I remember saying something pertaining to he doesn't train the dog. He trains the human😂. I felt that one. Thanks much for the video. God bless

"... Oh hi, you have a husband too? Can I pet your husband, he's so cute, may I give him a treat?" I just found these podcasts. I'm always looking for new techniques and philosophies. You don't just download "Training" as an app on your dog. I have to work with him/her. I need to discover how each dog I train thinks and best learns.

I enjoyed listening very much & I live in England, Surrey just 15miles from central London , I have a very obedient 2 1/2 year old male Saluki, any time tou read about his breed it's always said never let a Saluki off the lead unless your in an inclosed area, well im proud to say my boy is only on the lead if im going near busy roads . We are lucky to live with many woods, commons, I believe the secret of having a great bond with your dog is plenty of exercise and different routes everyday, he could be playing with a dog his met on the common but, if I say ok its time " Leave him/ her now & a little Whistle he's right with me the only thing he won't come back if he's chasing squirrels but that's his DNA kicking in and not much I can do about that. I also had my volume as high as it would go and your audio is very quiet . Looking forward to hearing from you both again thank you 🙏👍🐾🐾🐾🐾

I'm looking forward to watching and learning. I have 4 miniature schnauzers (3 males - all rescues and 1 female I've had since she was 8 weeks old). These four feed off of each other's bad behaviors like nothing I've ever seen. For example: I have a cat. My female was raised with him. My first male rescue came into the house and there were never any issues. Add 2 bonded males who had never been around cats and now it's a free for all with all four when he shows his head. I really need to learn how to take control of the pack and get them focused on me and what how I want them to behave... without loosing my cool too. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

YES ! Thank you for reinforcing my belief in doing exactly what I have been doing... ..but with all the Positive only and force free trainers flooding the media and the amount of Dogs / owners needing our services proving that Balanced family / pack life is a way of life...if we provide a balanced way of life the dogs fall into place, even without any real effort. We all need a balance , structure, Rules , responsibilities , a Job , a place that is valued by all our family / pack members.Great solid honest interview.

You guys have nailed so many points I've tried to convey, a lot of the same analogies I've used. Exactly on the head with your descriptions on generating rapport by participating in the conversation just long enough than pressure off. Pressure off is important and may drop dopamine and de-escalates. The humans who stare down or make a gesture or strange mouth noise only serve to excite! Than you get a run away in the "Game Theory" tit for tat. Dog Tit, you Tat back, than go back to Nash equilibrium. It's communication. Be honest but gentle. I don't like that, thank you for listening.

    Hi guys,
    Very interesting Pod cast.
Nice to hear some Science as opposed to TH-cam Fluff!!
Not sure if you have read any of these but if you havent you really should.
Steven R Lindsay has a 3 book Series on Canine Psychology you may find challenging given the pure Science and Psychology covered. (just about everyone that reads these books struggles).
    1. Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training, Volume 1 - Adaptation and Learning
    2. Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training, Volume 2 - Etiology and Assessment of Behavior Problems
    3. Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training, Volume 3 - Procedures and Protocols
As a Trainer I have developed a training Model Called "Adaptive Foundation Learning" which you may find interesting.
We should talk at some stage.
    Kind Regards,
    JCB

A problem I've always had is keeping up with the dogs mind. They react so quickly that it's hard to catch their ques on time. When they comply, sometimes it's hard to be fast enough to acknowledge the good behavior because it's almost instant, and then they are moving into expecting the next command. I try to get them to learn to hold that command and wait until I tell them what to do first. I'm a little confused about the command and release concept, and when the time is right for the reward because they are so fast at moving from on thing to the next. Their brains are faster than mine.😂

Great incite. I could gush over your understanding or concepts but I won’t. I’ll drop a nugget though. Are you aware of the Buddhist approach to compassionate or validating behavior? They feel like we as individuals are responsible to find our own happiness . We become what makes us happiest. So, my point is, they don’t coddle or validate as we do because they feel it contaminates or corrupts an important process of growth. Provides a false approval .

I believe in Dog. dogs are peoplex2; an excellent discussion of real behavior and responses that honor our best friend. Both individuals are in tune with both dogs and people. This should be required viewing for owners. Western civilization was advanced in large part because of the help provided by dogs and cats. thanks for posting.

Never trained my animals and they do exactly what I want them to do never need a leash for any of them because if I have a dog that needs a leash I don't want that dog These animals do not have conceptual thought like we do You people know exactly what you're talking about

Just found your TH-cam channel . Hope you can give some tips or insight on a rescue dogs fear agression. We rescued a mill female shi poo ...we have trained her to be a service dog to help my husband who has Parkinsons...she alerts to seizures and gets dropped cell phone and pill bottles but we still work on a a on going issue of fear aggression. Especially when encountering larger dogs. .we have gone through 5 trainers the last being the best... we use a vibrating collar which has helped so much. .we still struggle with her fears of strangers but more other dogs ...and it's more intense of a larger dogs . She also was attacked by a pit 2 weeks after we got her. No severe injuries as I used a fire extinguisher to get the pit to release her when it ran into our garage and attacked with no warning or provocation...she had two heavy collars which saved her. She became submissive rolled on her back and even urinated before the dog latched on to her neck ...its almost as if she has the tude I'm gonna get you before you get me...we work on this frequently ..I let her know I am pack leader I am the alpha all the time...we have made huge progress but it's still a issue that concerns me a great deal...thanks to anyone with insight or tips etc.

I have an older spayed female chi/pug and a younger spayed female Boston terrier/pug/ possibly chihuahua x . The older one was starved and abused, got her at 7.5 months, she weighed 4lbs, shes 6lbs now and 6yrs old tomorrow. The Boston is 2 and was raised with her and a 9yr old neutered Male chi/Maltese. The females get along with the Male but not each other. The Boston wants to eat the chi. I have to keep them separated which is hard but the Boston is fearful as well to the point where I can't groom her and she needs sedation at the vet. The Boston's breeding is very questionable but we cant put her down and shes not adoptable. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ah I found it. Hello. They are both part pug. Pugs tend to be really close to the owner. Loyal to the end. The Boston who is also Pug. Boston is the young one, while I continue. Boston is jealous due to seeing how the older pug is doing their job. Also you are right with the questionable breeding. She wants to eat the other dog. I don't know if this happened right away or it took time to happen. Signs show before leading up to the dog wanting to eat the other dog. If it was straight away. The dog has Agression. Learning dog behavior will help if it took time to escalate. Straight away, have to keep the Terrier away. Yet they get along with the boy. Boston might want him for herself. Agression may have been breed into the dog. The Boston gets along with the Male. It appears to be jealousy and agression. Jealousy only if it escalated. Now Jealousy because of being a Pug more on that later. The Male dog. Did they compete for you? Do they try to win your attention? Also do you treat them all the same. Give them al the same attention. If a Pug sees you are happier with another Pug. Dogs can sense how you are so it may be that she can tell you like her more. If you already have a Pug and you treat them better, even with small things. Like do you take only 1 for car rides and not the other. The other Pug will get jealous. If someone tries to hurt you. The pug will jump in and take the hit. Not once or twice, to the end they will keep going. Loyal to the end. It's tricky but if it took time to escalate. You have a jealous Pug. Straight away to eating. Different treatment, social, agression breed in there. It doesn't fill the whole bar the agression. I see a turn around can happen. Now I just explained off of what I got from your comment. What may be going on with your dog. You yes you not in general anymore. Be aware of the details as you care for them. What do you do. Next the dogs. How is it different between the 3. Body language, being able to read them and yourself. You'll have your dogs togetyer. But it's continuous work. Not just ok their fine now. No, they are lovable and you're their leader. It isn't if you want to do it. They need you.

I was intrigued by the video title and decided to watch. Was into the direction you went and then little comments left me with ??? Then agreed and agreed followed by more ??? Especially the scale of at “even” or where you want the dog to be and say “submissive” I ignored it and watched on and your vision seemed interesting until the end when you say “if you like Milan” you lost the entire video. The. The “submissive” comment came around to just about discredit all your comments of a connection with a dog to a dominance roll

I don't know what to believe from the dog psychology proponents. I have had anywhere between 2 and 8 dogs at any one time over the past 20 years and have NEVER had to worry about their behavior ever and without training and without setting boundaries for them. For the past 11 years I have lived on a fenceless property of 5 acres and my dogs never leave the property. They always want to be by my side and I have never made them have to respect me.
I call my philosophy of how I manage my dog family as free-dogging it! I let them be dogs in every respect and they just "choose" to behave. I never raise my voice to them. I rarely have to tell them no. When people turn up to my home, there is not a single bark nor a single step of unwanted behavior. They accept that someone has turned up and they even go up to the person to greet them and do so in a very gentle manner.
I am fortunate that I live in the country so all my walks are off leash. I let them be dogs for the entire time on those walks. We also walk past properties with other dogs and my dogs just ignore them and keep walking.
So I don't know about everyone's take on how to treat dogs and how to make them behave. I find that they just learn as they go about what is and what isn't appropriate behavior. When we first adopted our little Boston Terrier who was very attached to me, it was my German Shepherd at the time who taught her to NOT chase my car when I left.

We talk about dog behavior in human terms because we do not speak "dog." Dog behavior is in its DNA: Security, roam, a pack member, procreate. 90% of dog behavior is based on these factors. I allowed 10% for "goofy" because it doesn't fit.

@@flip_shifty well at least it gives you the chance to say no and obviously ignorant people think it’s the polite thing to do. I try to educate people why dog professionals never ask. We know better than to pet dogs that don’t know us even though the ignorant owner thinks it’s ok.
