I'll die on the hill the first film waa carried by phoenixs performance and the score. And it was aping taxi driver and king of comedy too blatantly for me .
Really the Joker character in general never really needed a movie because what makes Joker somewhat interesting is his battle with Batman. The first Joker is a good movie but it's essentially a redo of classic Martin Scorsese films it's a good redo but a redo none the less. With all that said the first Joker did not need a sequel it was a self contained story this movie was pointless from the start as there was nothing left to say about this Joker if Batman was never showing up.
I also think the reason Ledger's Joker worked SO well was because we didn't know anything about him. We didn't have an origin story he was just crazy from the start and made it a bit scarier. You never knew if he was even telling the truth or not.
@@KristySki Yes Correct Ledgers Joker is the best Joker because he's just a force of nature because he has no origin that we ever see he's just a force of chaos.
This just comes off as beyond pretentious. The title, Lady Gaga saying it’s “not a musical, just tells the story through music,” Phillips… being Phillips, etc. All of it just rubs me the wrong way. Comes off as such a try hard attempt to feel like a way deeper thing than it needs to be, like it’s just so above the genre/source material because… the last one won an Oscar? I don’t mind taking risks, but this reeks of doing it for the sake of winning Oscars. I really like the first film, and I just have practically little to no interest in this one.
I am in the minority of not fan of the first movie. In the first movie they completely misunderstood the joker. They made him out to be a complete looser. Joker is not a looser, it's the opposite he has balls he is fearless and he is courageous. Whilst totally crazy. But fearlessness is his superpower and it proves time and time again to be a match to fancier superpowers like superstrenght and whatnot.

agree on a lot of things, but regarding Lee "suddenly falling in love with Arthur" they very explicitly stated that she was already previously obsessed with Joker and got close to him on purpose...
So yeah this film was 💩 Joker 2019 is still a masterpiece Edit:I did NOT mean to start a war in the comments I meant that I liked the first film and the second wasn't for me I don't mind others saying anything positive or negative about either film
The first film is not a masterpiece to me. It has good elements. I find the musical score and Jouquin’s performance great, but everything else is crap. I don’t buy for a second that even in city like Gotham people would cheer on his actions. The story in that film is just a mess…. The second film I’m interested because I’m curious about how they’ll make this sequel a musical. It looks like mixed results…. We’ll see if I like it when I see it
Surprisingly enough I feel very nostalgic when it comes to that movie despite not being to long since it was released. I guess watching it my friends before all the shit went down makes it a sweet memory
When I first heard they were making a sequel I thought why? Then when I heard it was going to be a musical I thought what? Then I saw trailer and thought maybe? After your review I now think nope!
Will Todd Phillips be trusted as a director after this? Before this misstep I would have suggested he do another DC property….but it sounds like he needs to be kept far far away from my DC. I need them to make a comeback
WB: Todd, Joker is amazing. We want you to do a sequel Todd Phillips: What? No, the story's over. And I'm suck at sequel WB: Really? Just do it anyway. We want another billion dollars and Oscar trophies Todd Phillips: Fine, let me prove my point
I could not agree with your review more. This movie was such an embarrassment and disappointment to all that loved the original Joker. I hope it puts a nail in the coffin of any more Joker movies. What a mess and waste of money.
I enjoyed the first movie, because of how dark and depressing it was, and as a warning that we need to treat others with care or we could push them to darkness. The second movie just didn't work at all in any way. The music was not good, and could have worked if they had a heightened fantasy element. The real world parts were too unrealistic (I agree with you on the Lee+Arthur scene in prison, I'm like "this is fantasy right?.. no?... Wth."). It didn't have a strong enough statement, especially if it was supposed to be some repudiation to the fans of the first one. It was overall really 'meh' to me.
That's the problem and it proves it. The first one nobody from wb wanted anything to do with it. Threw them some money and said sure have fun... Then it made a lot of money so of course the bad decision makers now want a sequel and likely meddled as they always do leading to failure
The idea of the musicals are part of madness of the Jokers mind. The fact you say it was a commercial break in the Jokers head was kind of the plot of the whole damn film lol
In the theater parking lot after I saw the original, I told my friends “this was as close to perfect as you can get and is the definition of what a “stand alone movie” should be. They’re going to fuck it up”
Joker 2 reminds me of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 or Pet Semetary 2 or Gremlins 2 or even Halloween II (2009). Same Director who decides to go in a radically different direction for their Part II vs. The original, which is largely considered a masterwork.
I'd have made a film titled 'Jokers' , It would have been a twisted take on the 'One flew over the cuckoos nest' premise. Harley would be a therapist that Arthur sees, and the film would revolve around him deciding what to do with the power of being Joker, causing chaos at Arkham and a progressive transition from martyr to career criminal as he plots to take over Arkham with the assistance of an unhinged career criminal played by Jack Nicholson/Willem Dafoe who schools Joker on crime. In the end - the police storm Arkham and the newly crowned prince of crime escapes and betrays Nicholson who laughs hysterically as his new protégé is set loose on the DC Universe. And he leaves carrying his biggest new fan Harley in his arms... Bad or good, that took me 5 mins to come up with...what's their excuse?
Their thought and writing process got clouded by money and greed. Studio execs think people are stupid, if one thing goes good, they will throw whatever at the wall that sticks and think people will eat it up just because of one big success smh
What you wrote is called a fanfic. I could ask ChatGPT to come up with something better then what you just wrote but that doesn’t mean it will automatically make for a good movie. When you come back with a full thought out script then we can talk.
I feel like I agree up until the point when you spoke about the scene where Lee is in Arthur's cell and they - I suppose have intercourse when Arthur references it, she doesn't correct him because Lee is crazy psychotic. Arthur is even told that she comes from wealthy stock, her father being a doctor and she even mentions she was working on her psychology degree when he calls her out for it. If Lee said: 'Arthur what are you talking about, I never went into your confinement cell because it wouldn't look good on her if she did, because then her grip on him wouldn't be as strong like she wants - and even when she tells him she's pregnant that works to her advantage because its continuing the delusion - I agree with what you said cody in part when you said they seem to make reference to stuff which should have been a fantasy - my go-to example of how it doesn't add up is when Arthur and Lee are doing the waltz in the rain and they run up to the gate with the reporters on the other side and they start climbing it. They establish in the first musical sequence that the the songs being sung are in Arthur's mind but during that rainy sequence The reporter in a scene that takes place later makes reference to the fact that Lee was singing which kind of breaks the rules and doesn't make any sense in the grand scheme because of what they established. I didn't hate this film but I didn't love it like I did the first one it was just sort of an Okay film. I had a good day out at the cinema. I had a nice dinner afterwards and I went home Great review as always @CodyLeach have a great day and all the best 👍☺

The first film was divisive, but I don’t think it was ever divisive that the film was well made with a smart script. The sequel just sounds divisive and poorly made
@@CodyLeachYT that’s a good clarification. Poorly made script. Honestly, if this sequel is just “Joker 1.5” like I’ve been hearing, where they recap the events of the first film and give “closure” to these events that really isn’t needed, then it honestly feels like it shouldn’t have been made. The best sequels are able to stand on their own
Todd Phillips cribbed from Scorsese a much better filmmaker than he'll ever be, for Joker, so I thought he would crib from New York, New York. Though even that movie had more coherence than this one seems to. Seems instead that he cribbed from Pennies From Heaven. To quote to reviewers of that film (as it seems to echo your thoughts here) "...is one of the most hopelessly esoteric big-budget Hollywood pictures ever made, a lugubrious, neo-Brechtian musical exercise of notable pretension and virtually no artistic payoff." Or ,"The movie, though, is not easy to respond to. It's chilly without being provocative in any intellectual way." Which I HATED Pennies From Heaven, and I love musicals, and can like some dark films, but it just wasn't good. So it seems like this is like that.
I loathed Pennies From Heaven. I remember watching it as a kid and just feeling confused compared to classically structured musicals of the time like Grease...heck even Grease 2. This seems like a Pennies From Heaven sequel more than a Joker sequel.
She's a very annoying minion and not a compelling anti-hero, but she's very interesting when they're exploring her relationship to good and evil. They completely failed to utilize either of those easy options and did something even worse.
WTF were these people thinking?!? Who the hell makes a BLEAK psychological thriller and decides to make the sequel A MUSICAL???!!!??? This movie basically cancels out its own audience. Never gonna watch it! The greatest musical of all time is STILL a musical!!!🤮🤮🤮
It's not nearly as out of place as you are making it seem. The musical numbers are meant to be Arthur's way of escaping from reality. He literally does this in the first movie (on a much smaller scale) by dancing whenever he is in highly stressful moments. He also sings at the end of the first Joker film. Not necessarily saying they were planning it all along, but it isn't out of no where and is actually fitting to the character.

Joaquin is amazing. Ill even say Lady Gaga is great. But this isnt DC, this isnt Joker. I dont know why they took this story and this character Arthur and dressed the whole thing in DC and Gotham
The most intriguing part about The Joker’s lore is that the idea of the Joker is way more influential then the actual Joker. I feel like this is where the Story should have went with Joker 2.

To be honest, I think "Joker" was only good because it basically took Taxi Driver and King Of Comedy and mashed them together with Joker's character. I don't think it was necessarily due to Philips's personal talent as a filmmaker.
The acting performances were very solid, it was visually stunning, & directed well. For me personally I just didn’t enjoy the movie overall, the musical numbers weren’t good & the slow burn wasn’t worth it for me in the end. I do think this film will find its audience & those people will enjoy it. 4.5/10 🎬
I didn’t even like part 1. It just never felt like the joker to me. Phoenix is a great actor but not joker. It’s a perfect example of Hollywood taking a name that will make bank no matter what and doing what they want regardless if it’s accurate to the source or not
I can confirm that musical fans were also confused about this movie. They made a movie that pissed off non musical fans and musical fans. It's like the Mean Girls musical movie on steroids lmao.
It’s disappointing to hear they didn’t make a super standout film or musical but I love Joaquin Phoenix and Gaga so I will watch just for them… Gaga has a new companion album out called Harlequin - hope that makes up for it! Give it a listen

I was also dissapointed with the movie but I am sort of sick of hearing "I was worried when I heard it was a musical". For one, it did not end up being a musical in the sense that most people think of one. It was a movie with musical numbers. Secondly, I don't understand why something being a musical should temper your expectations for it. I was let down by the musical numbers and the way that they were executed but that's not due to a lack of potential in the medium itself. The movie did not live up to expectations but that has nothing to do with the fact that it's a musical, its the fact that the idea was executed poorly. I think the musical elements could have been brilliant but sadly they were sub-par. But in a vacuum, there's no reason that a sequal to a non-musical film can't itself be a musical.
In an alternate universe in 1980 ‘Taxi Driver 2:the musical’ starring Dolly Parton and De Niro was released.

It's not a redo. It's inspired by. Which means it has a similar feeling. Several scenes are similar. The story is completely different.
I agree, the first film did not need a sequel, bit this was a great sequel to a great film.
I also think the reason Ledger's Joker worked SO well was because we didn't know anything about him. We didn't have an origin story he was just crazy from the start and made it a bit scarier. You never knew if he was even telling the truth or not.
@@thereviewartistrrp5493 It's Martin Scorsese Taxi Driver fused with his other film King of Comedy using the name Joker.
Feels like I Am Sam with Sean Penn, where he went "full retard" and on Oscar night went home empty handed...
@@RayanEiden-js9obThe first movie was supposed to be an origin story and by the end of that movie, he did become that fearless Joker who had balls, but the sequel just completely reverts him back to that depressed and lonely man at the beginning of the first movie

Bro just watch it. You could be surprised
Damn shame, Joker's time in Arkham is an opportunity for a really dark kick-ass movie.

This feels more like a Joker story than the actual movie does.
What you wrote is called a fanfic. I could ask ChatGPT to come up with something better then what you just wrote but that doesn’t mean it will automatically make for a good movie. When you come back with a full thought out script then we can talk.
Then you would have to hire a director more talented than Phillips to pull that off.

If Lee said: 'Arthur what are you talking about, I never went into your confinement cell because it wouldn't look good on her if she did, because then her grip on him wouldn't be as strong like she wants - and even when she tells him she's pregnant that works to her advantage because its continuing the delusion -
I agree with what you said cody in part when you said they seem to make reference to stuff which should have been a fantasy - my go-to example of how it doesn't add up is when Arthur and Lee are doing the waltz in the rain and they run up to the gate with the reporters on the other side and they start climbing it.
They establish in the first musical sequence that the the songs being sung are in Arthur's mind but during that rainy sequence The reporter in a scene that takes place later makes reference to the fact that Lee was singing which kind of breaks the rules and doesn't make any sense in the grand scheme because of what they established.

The first film was divisive, but I don’t think it was ever divisive that the film was well made with a smart script. The sequel just sounds divisive and poorly made
Poorly made script for sure. Visually, it’s well done.
@@CodyLeachYT that’s a good clarification. Poorly made script.

It's not nearly as out of place as you are making it seem. The musical numbers are meant to be Arthur's way of escaping from reality. He literally does this in the first movie (on a much smaller scale) by dancing whenever he is in highly stressful moments. He also sings at the end of the first Joker film. I will need to see it for myself. I have seen mixed reviews on it most on the negative. Todd Phillips didn’t want a sequel, but WBD threw the cash.
Todd Phillips was absolutely the LAST person I EVER Would’ve thought would’ve ended up getting three Oscar Nominations from a film he directed (screenplay, directing and film producer) since I absolutely HATED just about every other film he ever did (even Hangover)…and yet he made at least a competent first movie….seems to have crapped the bed here, though

I'd rather watch another Harley Quinn film than another Deadpool film.
