Masjid Wazir Khan is one of the most beautiful and historically significant mosques in Lahore, Pakistan. It reflects the rich architectural heritage of the Mughal era and stands as a masterpiece of Islamic art and craftsmanship. Here's a brief history:
    Construction and Patron
The mosque was built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1634 and 1641. It was commissioned by Hakim Ilm-ud-Din Ansari, a prominent court physician to the emperor, who later became the Governor of Lahore and was given the title “Wazir Khan,” hence the mosque’s name.
    Location
It is situated inside the Walled City of Lahore, near Delhi Gate, along the bustling Shahi Guzargah (the Royal Trail) that leads to Lahore Fort.
    Architectural Features
The mosque is renowned for its vibrant kashi kari (tile work) and fresco paintings in bright blues, greens, yellows, and oranges.
It follows the traditional Mughal layout, featuring a central courtyard surrounded by prayer chambers and four corner minarets.
The central prayer hall has a large dome with intricate geometric and floral patterns.
Persian calligraphy decorates the mosque walls, showcasing Quranic verses and poetic inscriptions.
    Significance
The mosque was not just a place of worship but also served as a social and cultural hub. Adjacent to it were a bazaar and sarai (inn) for travelers, which remain partially functional today.
    Restoration Efforts
Over the years, the mosque suffered wear and tear but has undergone significant restoration by the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) in collaboration with international organizations to preserve its historic charm.
