  • This is a review (my first) of the new 2014 Alaska railroad smooth-side passenger set by Kato. It is all purchased separately if you want, but I bought all of the pieces to make up a 10 car consist with two EMD E8A and one E8B unit and passenger cars. I also installed light kits into all 10 cars. I haven't bought the DCC decoders for them yet. All purchased at Trainworldonline.com

    Great video! I love the Kato Alaska collection. I have the Kato Alaska railcar set with additional cars. I also have the Wheels of Time Alaska bilevel cars. My Motive power consists of Two SD70s. An E8 2402. And the pair of Kato RDCs. These are rare to find in the midwest. I hope to ride this train one day!

    Hi Bob,
    Thanks for sharing your 1st video. I am also fairly new to the TH-cam community. Was great to see another modeler starting out on here. Looking forward to seeing more from you.

      Thanks for stopping by. One video so far, I have to many ideas for the next one to choose. Think I will go with a more detailed review of how to install the light kit in the passenger cars or DCC in the engines.

      I have been with an Nscale club for about two years now. I am 17 so we are both in the same boat in terms of money. That is why i am in it with my grandfather. we split most stuff. Are you part of an Nscale club anywhere?

    • @DaBobsNScaleMancave
      @DaBobsNScaleMancave  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not a member of a club just yet, the ones I see are modular clubs at shows. I am into stuff that doesn't transport from home. All customized to my living space. But I may join another one someday.

    Enjoyed your first video. I have 88 Kato locos in my collection and you will find more competitive prices at Model Train Stuff and Brooklyn Locomotive Works. I thought about buying the sets, but decided to stick with heavy freight and Amtrak locos. Keep up the good work.

    • @DaBobsNScaleMancave
      @DaBobsNScaleMancave  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Model train stuff didn't carry them or pre-order either. Top Hobby Train had everything I wanted at $2 less and they received theirs before Trainworld did. I waited an extra 2-3 weeks for mine to arrive. I will have to checkout Brooklyn locomotive works some time. I am looking for a SD70Ace C&NW UP Heritage unit to complete my set, but they are very hard to find. Thanks for stopping by.

    this video definitely sold me on the set! (except ill be doing illinois central). I love how close the cars sit together and i will probably now do the light kit. great video and layout keep it up!

      Thanks, I like the set a lot too. If you are going to do the light kits, checkout my video on how to do it, a little long but well worth the look to see the issues with the install.

      Any chance you can measure the train with an A and B loco and six cars? I can't seem to find dimensions anywhere and wanna see what I'm gonna have to do for my layout

    • @DaBobsNScaleMancave
      @DaBobsNScaleMancave  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Crigler Each engine is around 5 1\4". The 6 car smooth side set with 2 engines is 48.5" long. The 4 car set adds another 25". A full consist with 2 E8A, 1 E8B, a 6 and 4 car set will run you up to 78.5". Each car will average around 6.25". Hope this helps.

    Great review Bob!! I have the same outfit 4 and 6 car set with the ABA set up only in Illinois Central. I am pretty happy with it. I thought about getting the Kato light kits but I am only running DC and don't know if this would effect it?

    Kato is the best for n scale in my opinion, I go to trainworld.com for my trains, man $79.99 for a sd70ace heritage unit, best place for trains but, love the video bob

    Good to know that I'm not the only one starting out on my model railroad! Awesome set, Bob! The cases are normally a good storage. I have many Kato cars and locomotives, amazing runners, even for DC. Some locomotives, such as the P42, has more details you can put on, like MU Hoses and a front plow. Kato is normally good for customer service, so if you break a coupler or the locomotive doesn't run, just send it to KatoUSA at www.katousa.com and they will either send you the part to fix (if you have something that is fixable from your workbench) or fix them. the light kits look amazing, and seem easy enough. Being based in Japan, Kato also has many Japanese instructions and by the barcodes. If you abruptly stop the locomotives, the locomotive will brake as if it is in real life, dimming the lights and slowing the motor. Having 3 DC locomotives on one track reduces the speed by 1/3rd. What's your favorite railroad? You should model after that! if you get a tabletop layout, that is. you should get a track cleaning car if you want to use that shelf layout, as it is hard to clean the track, and with dirty track, it is not good to run the trains. The locomotives are slower and the lights are dimmer, as the contacts are not perfect and have dirt on dirt. Also, locomotive wheels will get dirty too, so I have a wheel cleaner. Any would work fine, and so will regular cleaning like you would with the track, but it is better to use the cleaner. That's in my opinion, however.

    Have you heard Kato has a new steamer coming. Dont know what it is yet. Hope its the UP FEF3 or a ATSF 2900 class

    • @DaBobsNScaleMancave
      @DaBobsNScaleMancave  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is UP 4-8-4 #844 that is in their steam program. You can pre-order at local hobby shops or at some on-line stores. I am not sure of the price but I assume around $225 and without sound.

    When I De case.! my Engines I Take n put them on a Foam Engine Cradle Turn the Case & Engine Face Down to the Cradle and I spread the Jewel Case till the Engine Slides out on it's Own.! And Yes they can be a Burger to get out, For me I Think KATO should Put all of there Excursion Set in the Snap Cases.. Like the one your Showing they should have put the U.P. Excursion set in one of those Snap Cases and or Made it so that you could put the EFE-3 in the Case as Well.. That Engine Deserves the Best Case out there..

    • @DaBobsNScaleMancave
      @DaBobsNScaleMancave  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +akr3985fan Yes I agree, they should have put the UP excursion set in a better case. You can buy those snap cases empty with just the foam and make your own case if you want. The problem is that there are 7 cars and the cases hold 6 normally. This is probably why they didn't put them in a bookshelf case, they would of had to make a custom case size to fit it all in there.

    Very nice starting video. If I may provide some constructive criticism for the future, I think you should slow down a bit going through the details. And with it being n-scale, consider using well focused close-up stills to show anything you want to accentuate. Good luck with your channel! If you have any interest in the real railroad, take a peek at my channel!

    • @DaBobsNScaleMancave
      @DaBobsNScaleMancave  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I appreciate the suggestion to slow down. The problem was that it started out 23 min long so I increased parts of it to 145% so I wouldn't fall asleep watching it. I tend to think to much about what I am going to say, so I say it clearly. My future ones are going to be planned out better for sure. I can only get better. I will check out your channel.

    Your radius is tight for those 80' cars. What radius works better? 18"?

    • @DaBobsNScaleMancave
      @DaBobsNScaleMancave  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the layout, I have 19" radius as my smallest. it works fine for me.
