There is NO BMW that compares with Porsche. The Porsche kills the M4 in every such comparison. This is all they have to work with for now. The base 911 is not available for now and the M8 is not available either.
911s have become bloated GTs; they're a far cry from the little sport cars that they used to be. However, I'm not sure that an 8 series is an apt comparison either.
the pricing is wrong on these. or maybe it's just change significantly this year? A M850i starts at $99,900. The Carrera S starts at $117,100. I think a better match would have been: - M850i vs. base Carrera 4 ($108,500) - M8 ($130,000) vs. Carrera 4S ($124,400)
Useless review. Super disappointed in this review. The 850 should be compared against an s-class coupe, not a sports car like the 911. Like comparing apples to oranges. Yes, the 911 became a better car more capable of “touring,” but I don’t think these cars are in the same class. The 911 is still a sports car compared. And this is not to knock the M850 which I love.

I daily use my 991.2 during summer time and for those that say/think the 911 isn’t practical comparing to any other 2-door coupe, quite obviously they’ve not owned or spent enough time with one. From grocery shopping at Costco to fun time on race tracks and very long distance road trips, it just does it all. I had owned several M cars and my winter daily is still a m550i xDrive but bmw has definitely shifted away from making cars for people who like to drive.
I also daily my 991.1 turbo (in California). It is great from grabbing take out, going to the gym with a change of clothes for dinner after. My wife and I recent got stuck in LA traffic and she had to admit the car was shockingly more comfortable than she expected.

The 911 Carrera S is not a GT and the M850i is not a sports car. The M850i competes with the Lexus LC 500 & S-Class Coupe. The 911 competes with the Benz AMG GT and maybe base specs Aston Vantage or Audi R8

Where it gets really interesting is how you define a grand tourer. You stated that the Porsche 911 is a better track car, but is it a better grand tourer? To me, “grand tourer” does not imply merely speed or handling, but also implies comfortable handling for long road trips, and in that regard, I would take the BMW 8 or even the 6 series, and an Audi A5 or RS5. I would also have plenty of space for two average-sized duffel bags.

It wasn't just a 356 with more modern technology, besides outperforming that it was also more usable, with space for a small family - a car that could be both sporty and be comfortably used every day and across long distances. A GT if you will. That was the starting point for later models trimmed primarily for performance. If the criticism is that 911 is "turning into a GT" it's merely staying true to its roots. Without negatively impacting performance.

You're exactly right, the 8 series always went up against the 928S4. They are designed to be boulevard cruisers, not canyon carvers.

On car wow the 850 runs 11.6 on the quarter mile. Not sure how you ran a 12.3. 0-100km is 3.7. It beats a standard 911 but not a S

What I think your doing is comparing apples and oranges. The Porsche is not a Grand Tourer, you have to be able to carry more than a handbag for that.
m8 will be more suitable than m850 , it has 617 hp > 523 hp ( m850i) , 0-100 3s > 0-100 ~4s ( 8 series )

A real competitor for the Porsche would be the i8 with this engine. You compared a GT to a Sports car
