The Corn Head is Broke ALREADY!

- One broken piece on the corn head can turn a bad harvest day into a nightmare, but thankfully, we caught the problem before hitting the fields. Today, as we worked on getting the John Deere 712FC corn head ready for what looks to be a later-than-usual harvest, we found and fixed a few critical issues. In this video, I’ll take you along as we begin ensuring everything runs smoothly, from checking the gearboxes and changing the main drive chain oil to oiling the gathering chains and everything in between.

Not to be a party-pooper, but just a friendly reminder to all farmers about what that lucky farmer said some years back after he won the lottery, and he was asked what he planned on doing now that he was a rich farmer. He said - "Oh, I'm just going to keep on farming as long as I can, until the money is all gone, and then we'll just have to see what happens."
I plan to make a video highlighting this in the near future

We do not, he manages without. He usually only asks me for help when the GPS on the digger doesn't work

I can't either...we use it for odd jobs around the farm. Hauling tools, cleaning up spilled grain, leveling gravel, etc.

Big machine. Big job to keep it going. Can you sharpen the corn cutting knives? Do you have a welder? Possibly that $98.00 part could be fixed with weld metal. As for the old tractor, It's probably the start relay. Are you and your dad able to use a Volt ohm meter? I'll bet the start relay isn't closing. It's a small cylinder somewhere near the panel. It has a big wire from the battery and another that goes down to the starter. Then there is a wire from start switch on on the dash that is lighter gauge that goes to the start relay. Sometimes corrosion alone is enough to prevent it from working. Make sure all the connection terminals are clean. You can clean them with sand paper or a pocket knife. The metal should be shiny.
A lot of tractors (&cars/trucks) do use the type of setup you are talking about with an electric relay, however this one does not, the starter switch here is actually on the starter and activated by a Pull rod.
@@theda850two Make sure all the terminals are clean and shinny on the battery, and starter. Sometimes you have enough current to run the lights and horn, but not enough to turn the starter. What is the voltage on the batter right now. A fully charged battery is 13.6 volts. A battery that measures only 12 volts is dead. When they test a battery at the auto parts store, they put a load on the battery. Do you have a small hydrometer with floating balls to check the battery. Generally that's the best most reliable test. You can also have a short inside the battery,. Based on what you are reporting, it's either dirty connections or a weak battery. The negative batt4ery cable generally goes to the engine block.. Maybe in this case to the starter. There can be corrosion there. Also is there enough electrolyte in the battery? (water)
@@theda850two Another thought the pull rod is actiually connected to a switch probably internal to the starter, but maybe not. That switch could be making poor contact.
@@JoeLinux2000 ,, I've got the same starter and switch assembly on my 1951 Farmall Super C, I went to replace that starter switch, from a farm store, and it smoked on the very first try, then I bought a better one from Case/IH 💥
Turns out the remanded starter was actually bad, new one on the way!
When in doubt, replace it.
Need a lot of mechanical skills to maintain and troubleshoot all your equipment. Plus a lot of HiTech knowledge!
