An amazing, riveting performance. Stunning lush strings, a both commanding and yet also a richly sonorous Romantic-era pipe organ, and unparalleled energy, focus and concentration by all the performers. Bravo!
Yes yes. Oh a great performance. One of my most loved pieces of music since I was a teenager in the 1960’s. I am 70 yrs now. What a treat with sound and film Superb.
The finest performance of this concerto I have ever heard, and I have heard most. Both live and recorded. Talk about everyone working together. I swear they all felt the music exactly the same. This organist makes Bish look like a nightclub performer.
It would take TEN comments to describe I like in this performance, so I'll just mention a few things: 1) an unusually well-prepared orchestra & a conductor who understands the work's drama; 2) well judged tempos (today I learned that the fast section near the end can build to a greater impact if it doesn't rush); 3) a chance to see how busy a registration assistant can be; 4) excellent sound; 5) great camera work; and I could go on. Thank you, Latvia, for cultivating and presenting this group!
@@Mezzotenor No, I just read your comment that you, as me, liked this version of Poulenc. For some unknown reason something was wrong with the sound track and I wanted somebody elses´s opinion. But the second time I listened to it, it sounded okay. Thanks and have a good day!
I keep listening to this over and over again... absolutely mesmerizing, brilliant in every respect but I wish it would start from the beginning of the piece.
Fantastic! I've heard this concerto many times but never watched the performers. What a powerful experience. These players are WONDERFUL, and to watch he organist is just gripping. Thank you for this upload! In my opinion this is a 5 star performance to say the least.
Without doubt one of the best recordings I've ever heard of this piece. Wanted for years to find a venue/opportunity to perform this but it has never materialized. Bravo to the string players for TRULY playing. If I had it, I'd donate the funds for a new console. Let's hear it for the unappreciated console assistant.
I sooo agree. One can only assume that the console combination action no longer functions reliably, hence the very able assistant. Bravo also to the recording engineers involved with this amazing video!
BearAZ Seems like some bits of the combination action might be working -- occasionally we catch a glimpse of a manual piston being pressed...? A console assistant as busy as this gent is can't help but miss something (6:29) but bravo without doubt!
Brian du Fresne True enough! The most obvious evidence of, at least, the Tutti working is the giant THUNK right before the final flourish on the organ! That really made me smile. I also considered the possibility that he's the resident organist and knows the instrument really well, and they were limited on time, so it was a "you just play and let me do the rest" kind of arrangement.
After hearing so many awkward and very un-musical performances of this work, the lady at the console surely deserves a prize for superb playing, a keen sense of the musical sweep of the work. The organist, conductor, orchestra, and acoustics provide an unusually warm and satisfying ensemble, rare in so many recordings of this work.
I've heard this magnificent piece many times, but never with such clarity and conviction of phrasing and tempi. Why, oh why didn't the entire piece get recorded? Does anyone know if there is a version of this particular recording that is complete? Brilliant playing from everyone! Bravo to the conductor for being so true to Poulenc's score. I agree with Marco Longo... it is THE best performance I've ever heard.
you can try to write a letter to Rīgas doma baznīca and also VAS LATVIJAS VALSTS RADIO UN TELEVĪZIJAS CENTRS, and ask if they have the whole piece in archives.
Nice. But we could not look at the wonderfull facade of this Walcker-organ. After this comment I was written by Marcel Punt a.o. that the Walcker organ is in partly restoration and that is the reason that the facade is not filmed. Thanks for letting me know. This interpretation of Poulenc his Concerto is very fine and the recording is also excellent. Thanks
A lot of musicians will "gyrate" to the music. I've seen videos where almost the entire orchestra is in motion, especially during a particularly beautiful passage. Watch the saxophonist in the Ravel Bolero/Osaka. That guy really gets into it and with good reason.
Regarding the "gyrations" and such, Len Sullivan is correct that they do nothing for the actual sound. However, some wrist and arm motion such as she displayed can aid relaxation and a sense of phasing as well. She just does too much of a good thing here. Knowing that there is a camera pointed at you may also increase the perceived need to be visually "interesting."
L'orchestre arrive parfois a couvrir l'orgue !
Wonderful performance of this wonderful composition by Francis Poulenc! Apparently the idiotographer (videographer) does not know that there are notes played on the pedals with the feet. Would like to see more of her hands and less of her face, especially when playing some parts. Sad that the beginning is omitted.
Keeping time, a gyratory body or Pianistic hand motions are unnecessary to the organ technique. One can always tell 'which came first: Piano, or Organ. Her registration and articulation are very good.......but all that other: Unnecessary
A once in a lifetime performance of brilliance and unparalleled beauty - far outside the boundaries of the ordinary.
the finest performance! Blend, instrument, communication, technical sound recording, and vision.
An amazing, riveting performance. Stunning lush strings, a both commanding and yet also a richly sonorous Romantic-era pipe organ, and unparalleled energy, focus and concentration by all the performers. Bravo!
I agree. It is not blurry, as more "fancy" productions. More interesting to watch, too. Well done and thank you.
Yes yes. Oh a great performance. One of my most loved pieces of music since I was a teenager in the 1960’s. I am 70 yrs now. What a treat with sound and film
Superb.
The finest performance of this concerto I have ever heard, and I have heard most. Both live and recorded. Talk about everyone working together. I swear they all felt the music exactly the same. This organist makes Bish look like a nightclub performer.
What a nasty and ignorant comment to make about a musician. You could think about removing this!
wunderbar. i return to this place every couple of weeks ... this is the best performance and recording I have ever heard ...

Now, 11 years ago, are you still here? Please get in touch.
I wonder if you've confused me with someone else.

It's not a complete performance, in case that helps. First six minutes or so is omitted, for whatever reason.
Extraordinay performance, excelent musicians and very professional recorders..!
I keep listening to this over and over again... absolutely mesmerizing, brilliant in every respect but I wish it would start from the beginning of the piece.
Stefan Weibel Me too, it's so fascinating, can't explain!
Absolutely beautiful and very moving.
This piece is fabulous and the performance is the best one I've heard so far
This is a spectacular performance. I heard details in this performance I didn't hear in any of my recordings. I only wish the beginning was included.
Fantastic! I've heard this concerto many times but never watched the performers. What a powerful experience. These players are WONDERFUL, and to watch he organist is just gripping. Thank you for this upload! In my opinion this is a 5 star performance to say the least.
Went back there and didn't notice.

Love this.
Of course, the best version. Fantastic !
Beautiful passion from all, and excellent tempi !
Just fantastic. Very intens music understanding. Great organ/orchester balans. Great sound> Really rare that I heard this so fantastic performed!
Although not complete this is in my humble opinion the best version of this great work to be found here on YT
That was absolutely superb; every note was delightful! Bravo!!!
beautiful and haunting.

Insgesamt tolle Vorführung mAn.
Marvelous playing and fun, delightful video! Love the moment at 6:30 where Iveta is communicating so urgently with her assistant! Thanks for this!
lovely!
Organist good and beautiful.
Incomplet, hélas !
Mais le plaisir, lui, est total.
Where is the beginning???? I want to be blown out of my lazy chair by the first cord!!!!!
Wiebe Djembe She is the beginning.
Warren Pugh She is a godess............

I sooo totally agree. It's a luminous performance and they all "get it" ! One wonders just why the beginning is missing.
Beste Interpretation .
Großartig !!
this performance is shot like a Michael Bay movie and i love it
Dude, that violinist's eyes at 11:33, ... looks like he realizes the meaning of life.
Sorry,at that point not at all😂..Timpani player was extremely loud
Nice. But we could not look at the wonderfull facade of this Walcker-organ. Very sorry for the lack of the first part.
Does the first part of this work exist on video? This is a phenomenal performance in sooo many ways!

Wonderful! Do we ever get to see the organ?
fuck yes
10:34, key stuck and unstuck.
+F Stöver the face of the violin play :p
i can hear the violin sonata
I don't know who your 'we' are, but my 'we' simply call it bravado.
6:40
7:00
...und so hübsch;-)

An der Kritik ist was dran.....

Where's the 1st and 2nd Movements?
what is going on in his head at 11:37 haha
and at 15:21f.
...sometimes you move in response to music. We call that "performing"
Best Part: 12:06

Sad that the beginning is omitted.
Of course this isn't the begining of the work. Dumb idea to chop off the first three minutes of an otherwise good performance.
Keeping time, a gyratory body or Pianistic hand motions are unnecessary to the organ technique. One can always tell 'which came first: Piano, or Organ. Her registration and articulation are very good.......but all that other: Unnecessary
Is the sound track changed?? Or has TH-cam changed? It doesn´t sound like it did two years ago?
