  • Why You Should Raise Your Own Meat Birds From Hatch to Harvest!
Chickens are the new TP. No, don't use chickens as toilet paper...there are probably a few laws about that! What we mean is, the supply of chickens is being interrupted because everyone has started to think about how to grow their own food. Bravo to that, but...when people binge buy or panic purchase what does that leave for everyone else? This thought challenged us to find our own solution!
Hatching chickens (or any bird) is incredibly fun, and sustainable, and extremely local. In an effort (in the name of science!) we want to see what it takes to raise our own chickens from Hatch to Harvest. We have butchered our "extra roosters" but never grown chickens for meat in any sort of volume. Follow us along as we venture to know what it takes to raise a chicken from #hatchtoharvest!

About us: We have 4 kids and a 5 acre farm here in Northern California. We have made a commitment to learning how to raise our own food, as fast as we can, in the most fun way possible. This is a journey of us learning how to provide more and more for ourselves.

We didn’t plan the Easter thing either! If we had an all black chicken probably wouldn’t have been our choice! 😂 Completely agree on the meat bird thoughts. Good stuff guys. 👍🏻

I know this is old, but RE: food, grow cow peas and feed them the greens; this used to be a common fodder bale a million years ago. Grow sweet potato and feed them greens and cooked roots, grow Daikon cover crops and feed them the greens (good protein source) and tubers (cooked). Create a black soldier fly setup; may need to be indoor depending on where you are in the country. You can feed the fly larva food scraps, grains, coffee grounds and more from your land. May take time to build all this up, but it's possible. I'm feeding my birds off the land and I have less than 1/16 acre growing space. I grow almost all of it for the birds, so high fodder crops and fruit trees/bushes only since I'm ketovore. In 6 months my food costs are about 1/2. San's labor and seed costs (for now since I'm seed saving) Should be almost zero by mid 23.

ya.. i type as i watch lol.. your right about things being hard to get... and that is only going to get worse. smart thinking on your chick start up. we used to turn out 99 at a time. honestly? other then the amount of feed? wasn't much more work then working with smaller numbers. ( just more compost lol )

Cool video.. Justin Rhodes on TH-cam has really good ideas on saving on chicken feed. You can also ask your local grocery store if you can grab there throw away produce. They literally throw away by the garage can full. You could(possibly) take their cans and replace with an empty one maybe...
Also soaking your feed over night goes s long way.
    I love these videos!

Around Michael's Barn we have butchered the “spare rooster” and we haven’t ever really been disappointed so...we may get a smaller yield but at least we get to control how we get our meat!
