The irony was she got all of the jokes but she was such a good actress she didn't let it show during the scenes. It's said she went to a revival of Coconuts (the Marx Brothers earliest films were originally performed onstage) and witnesses say she laughed at all of them.
The applause should have lasted the entire night. What a gift to the world Groucho was...

Since i was 20 i enjoy Marx brothers.
About to be 20 in a few days, and I’ve loved the Marx Brothers since I was a little kid. Something so special about their humor that’s forever timeless. I wish that I could have seen them when they were in their prime, and have been able to meet them. They all seemed like such wonderful human beings.

I am a big fan of the Marx Brothers, and I got to say, when Groucho said "I wish Chico and Harpo could be here" I choked up.
StormSage13 Yeah that was sweet, it was really neat seeing him take a few beats while taking it all in, you could almost see the lifetime of memories being reviewed as he spoke about his beautiful brothers and family.

Two years earlier (1972), a friend and saw his last one man show at Carnegie Hall. He was incredible. He aged so much in those two years. After Chico’s funeral, a reporter asked Groucho, “How do you feel about your brother’s death?” to which he snapped, “Not as bad as he does.” I sure miss them and grateful for clips like this.
And with genuine affection, Jack gives him a kiss on the cheek. What a beautiful moment.
Groucho's son Arthur has said that Harpo's funeral was the only time he ever saw his father cry. Harpo's death was huge blow to the family from which they never really recovered.
I think he was crying at this Oscar moment.

I still get teary every time I watch this clip. The Marx Brothers gave so much joy to the world. Thank you Chico, Harpo, Groucho and Zeppo (and Gummo for his work behind his brothers). :-)
Groucho told of the time the Archbishop said to him, "I want to thank you for all the joy you put in the world." Grouch replied: "And I want to thank you for all the joy you've taken out of it." This was in his Carnegie Hall concert album. Unfortunately, I loaned it to a co-worker and never got it back.

Tunnel ,NY Lite Groucho should have won an oscar(s) for his work during the 1930s. This 'legacy' award they gave him was nothing more than a bunch of pretentious shit.

I watched a Night at the Opera today, and this evening smoked a cigar. The whole time I couldn't stop thinking of Groucho. What a man, what a legend. RIP

Groucho was 84 years old when he got this honor. His body may have been slowing but his mind was razor sharp.

@@rackinfrackin i have a guess, Louis B. Mayer. one of the founders of MGM Studios had it out for Groucho specifically. After His death in 1957, Mayer wouldn't have much influence. But by that point Groucho was more well known for "You Bet Your Life". The late 60's thru the 70's saw a huge resurgence of interest in his films. By the time the Academy gave him the award, it was likely because they knew they were running out of time. Since he was 83 & a well known cigar smoker from the age of sixteen.. they probably thought if they didn't do it then they wouldn't get another chance.. after all it took them until 2 years prior to this to give Chaplin one.
Grouchy wanted to study medicine, his older brother Chico said to him, "Think of all the lives you saved by not becoming a doctor"!!
Chico had great lines. His wife caught him kissing another woman, when confronted he said " I was whispering in her mouth."
And people think Chico was not the funny one who was the funniest 1

what a well spoken introduction, you never hear an introduction like that these days at award shows, they always read from cards or prompters and they never sound good. This was perfectly executed...

That's because Jack Lemmon was one of the most genuine gentlemen who ever graced the film industry with his grace, humor and charm.
Great to see they were honoured. Groucho was a big influence on me when I was young (8yrs+) I developed a quick wit based on watching their films and Groucho's performances. Helped me deal with bullies at school most of the time and make the girls laugh too. Would have loved to have met him. I'm 45 now and still watch their films.
My dad is a movie lover, and so even as only a 30 year old guy I grew up on the Marx Brothers movies. I hardly ever cry, but I started to tear up a bit when he said he wished Chico, Hapro and Margaret Dumont could be there.

Splendid introduction and respect from Jack Lemmon to one of the best, Groucho!! And at least Groucho lived 3 more years. He died in 77, a tough year 😔 for so many celebrities.

Nearly all comedians have stated that Groucho was either an inspiration to them, or that they utilized many aspects of his style. His impact on others (including the names others mentioned like Hope, Cantinflas, Carlin, and Lange) can't be measured. All of modern comedy has roots in Groucho Marx and the humor he and his brothers created in their movies.
Reds1921 - Carlin claimed that Groucho was his inspiration. When someone like Groucho inspires entire generations of comedians it is easy to call him the greatest comedian who ever lived. There isn't a comedian alive who hasn't learned from or been inspired by Groucho.
So many have NO IDEA how much impact he had on them. It's so pathetic how many think standup began with Louis C.K., or George Carlin.
We'll never see another comic as great as he was.

It's a great honor to see this, even in youtube. I loved the Marx Bros. and it's a shame that the Academy waited so long to give them an award. RIP to the greatest comedians of all time (Groucho, Harpo, Chico, even Zeppo).
R.I.P Groucho, we miss you. At least we get to enjoy your jokes through youtube. I was feeling down and your jokes picked me up and made me feel alive again. It took them this long to give them an Oscar? they really deserved much more earlier.

Jack Lemmon won the award for best actor that year for "Save the Tiger".
Also the year that Tatum O'Neil won her Oscar. The youngest actor to ever win.
He and his brothers took the stage and film and turned it over on it's head and we are forever indebted to them.

So very sad to watch the sun setting on so wonderful a mind, but how lucky we are to have his antics at his peak preserved to adore for all time.
There is a distinction between humorists and comedians, and Groucho was as much a humorist as he was a comedian. He saw the absurdity of life, and in his brilliance, served up life's humor on the finest silver platter for all to experience. There will never be another like him. Rest in peace, Groucho. You earned in so beautifully!

jack lemmon just adored groucho...he was 83 years young here..a honor well deserved..all have passed on including more than half the audience
When they said, “The one, the only, GROUCHO!”, how true that was.. There was more talent in his mustache than in most all the so called ‘comics’ who have come along since. Groucho was a brilliant comic star. There won’t be another like him. He and his brothers created something that went beyond everything done before or since. They brought so much joy and laughter to the world. They made us love them... And I love them to this very day. All you have to do is look at them and you find yourself smiling. That’s love.. We should all surely be grateful that their act has been preserved there on film for all time.
Without question, the greatest comic genius ever. I was just talking about Groucho over lunch with a friend today. Chico and Harpo were such great musicians as well as being funny. The likes we will never see again....
Grousho was a good musician too, he played the guitar, piano and other instruments and they say sang with perfect pitch.
Watch Duck Soup. No vulgar language, just great talent, fun & entertainment.
Considering the film came out in 1933, it was vulgar for the time.
And remember, we're fighting for this woman's honor, which is more than she ever did.

@@b.deville3236 I don't know, it sounded kind of vulgar to me considering it was the 30s. Some sex innuendos, jokes about the family unit, war mockery, presidential mockery, etc. Not many dared to make those jokes back then I assume, and I haven't seen it in other films except maybe for Chaplin.
I love all of them but you're right Duck Soup was great. It was an anti war movie and I think we need to show the younger generations these great movies. Thanks for your comment.
Grochos old shows are better than anything today.
Duck Soup should have won the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director.

I still suspect to this day that Margaret Dumont was playing him when she asked what everyone was laughing at. Maybe it never occured to Groucho, but it might have been himself who didn't get her joke.
The greatest at delivering one-liners and had the sharpest wit ... is also the man genuinely humbled by the accolades showered upon him. There will never be another Groucho.
The best of the best. The Marx Brothers' comedic timing was second to none. They portrayed American humor at its best. Who among us can take their place?

I couldn't agree more! They not only came along at the right time, but did such brilliant things with the time they were given! Groucho especially was one of the singular humorists of comedy's history. One of my favorite lines of his is this: "I'm not a fan of reality, but it's still the only place where you can get a decent meal." RIP Groucho and all the brothers. You have earned a very high place in people's hearts.
It's sad to see this honor come so late in this life. It's wonderful seeing him come to life at about 2.25 and seeing that sparkle in his eye. A genius. Thanks for the mamaries, Groucho.
You bet your life was on when i was a kid and feel in love with Groucho and then as a teenager discovered all the Marx brothers movies and Groucho's wit.Seeing this and anything of Groucho now my eyes get all teared up.

The all time comedy legend the one the only Groucho. One of the all time greatest! His legacy lives on. You bet your life his legacy lives on.
Erin Fleming helped take care of him in his final years, as detailed in the Stephen Stoliar book (soon to be movie) Raised Eyebrows. Groucho in '72 said a priest bumped into him in Rome and he dropped his cigar. Groucho said, "Jesus Christ!" The priest smiled, gave him 2 cigars and said, "Groucho, you just said the secret word".

Groucho's 3 kids had to sue to get her away from Groucho

Fleming deservedly died an obscure pauper.
Bob Nelson Groucho tells of meeting another priest who, upon realizing who he was, said “Gee, my mom’s crazy about you” to which Groucho replied “I didn’t know you guys had mothers” LOL
She was a cad, a bounder and a fink!

Fantastic TH-cam find! LOVE Groucho and The Marx Brothers. I’ve made sure to pass down their great contributions to my kids who still enjoy their films today.
I watched the Academy Awards every year growing up, even though I saw few of the movies being honored. I remember this honorary Oscar in '74. Was nice to see Groucho one more time. The movies, You Bet Your Life, the Dean Martin roasts, What's My Line and even his cameo on an episode of I Dream of Jeannie... Never will forget this amazing man.
I am in awe of Groucho's Marx's intellect, charm, communicative skills, and humor!
My beloved hero. I, too, wish the academy had gotten around to this earlier- it would have really been something to have all of the brothers there. Groucho was obviously moved by the honor. It really gets me.

Duck Soup is my all time favourite.
She gave birth to the second of six boys. Herbert, not Milton, was the final one. All five of the surviving boys went along with her wishes; only four made movies.
It's a shame copyright prevents us from seeing the medley of Marx scenes that was a wonderful part of this great tribute.
Duck Soup is a movie that made me love The Marx Brothers. I wish they were all there as well to be honored with Groucho.

Great man. I love the story about his son borrowing the car only if he arrived home by - I think - 10pm. His son was a couple of hrs late and turned off the motor and coasted down the driveway. He crept out of the car and quietly closed the door. As he approached the house Groucho popped his head out the window and said, in that typical Groucho way, "I heard that..." :-) Fondly remembered.
My papa was friends with some hollywood people and Groucho was one of them i still have the hat he gave me and he was so kind he gave me a 100 dollars when i turned 11 what a nice guy

Great to see this clip. I was 16 when this award was given to Groucho and I remember watching it live. I was then and still am a huge Marx Bros fan, having been introduced to their films by my Dad. The funniest joke from this presentation was not included in this clip. At one point, Groucho looks at the Oscar and wonders out loud if he could hock it.

The first 5 proper Marx Brothers movies were remastered and released on blu-ray. Beautiful work. We can hope the rest may one day see the HD light.

Groucho Marx and the Marx Brothers are my favorite comedians. They actually performed live in person and on stage in my hometown of Superior, Wisconsin back in 1913 before they became movie stars.

Chaplin, Keaton, Laurel and Hardy and some others were superb artists and very funny, but Groucho's ad libbing and quick spontaneous wit puts him over the top.
