It’s actually genius the producers of the original DVDs went back and used alternate shots to completely edit out the “fade to black” where the commercial would be placed if it were airing on TV, for the home video release. They do this with every single episode on the DVDs and I love it. No fade to black just to come right back to the exact same scene and then repeate a line….no show has ever done this for dvd before. You miss so many little moments also when watching it anywhere but on DVD.
OMG, I didn't know there's such a difference, and you're saying it's more or less like this for EVERY EPISODE?!? I have both DVD and BD boxsets, haven't re-watched the show since the 90's, so I have to choose better picture quality and wide-screen, or better editing and longer versions of EPs basically?
@@LennyNero2019 I’m saying it’s literally like this for every single episode of the series on dvd. Not 1 episode is edited the same as the episodes available on tv, streaming, bluray, 4k disc. Every “hour long episode” (basically every season finale episode of friends was a 1 hour event) is featured as 1 long episode with extended scenes making it even longer of an episode. BUT If you buy those same episodes now on iTunes, bluray, ANYWHERE (but the DVDs) every “one hour event” episodes has been not only split in to 2 half hour episodes but it is missing footage to make each half exactly 21 mins long. So instead of watching the theme song once and the whole episode all the way through you now have stop half way through. You have to sit through a “next time on friends” segment during the end Credits. Then you have to watch the “previously on friends” segment and then the theme song plays all Over again just to watch the second part of the 1 hour episode. Effectively wasting almost 4 mins of your time with recaps. That’s 4 mins of scenes they cut just to show you a recap of scenes youv already seen. Like I said the dvd plays it all the way through as 1 long episode with no interruptions and no watching a “previously on friends” recap and the theme song twice. The DVDs are literally “home video perfection” and for years I wondered why other shows couldn’t edit out the bank screen you get for a few seconds when a show fades out to where the commercial originally was and make it seemless like the friends DVDs. Why couldn’t other shows edit out the “previously on” segment’s so I do don’t have to rewatch that stuff and waste my time. I swear to god the “Will and Grace” DVDs must have so error in them (jk) because, when they “go to commercial” on dvd they have like 7 full seconds of dead air/black screen before the show fades-back-in to continue the rest of the episode It’s verry jarring to have a scene stop just watch a black screen for 7 seconds before the scene starts back up again. It is very jarring . Like I said no tv show has ever done this kind of stuff for a dvd release. Re-edit every single episode to play like a long 25 min special episode with no interruptions plus they add in more jokes and scenes. Unheard of. I’m shocked it not talked about more. I love love love and am literally obsessed with the way the edit out the commercial breaks (fade to black then fade back in). I swear I could talk about it forever it so interesting. It’s just a shame that these extended edits can never be remastered in HD because they were edited on video tape for the original dvd releases. There are now elements missing and a lot of footage would need to be found and painstakingly edited back in to every single episode. And WB studios will not do that. So they have remastered the original NBC versions of the episodes. And those original (and shorter) versions are what you get on tv, Bluray, 4k disc, iTunes.
@@typine Thank you! I wanted to know that, now when I rewatch the entire series from the beginning, I'll do it on DVD, sacrificing some quality for more, better content then, even though UHD boxset is out now, and I'll likely buy it as well, especially the December UK one, for packaging and new special features. I do like having all the 'previously on' and 'next on' segments as seen on TV, and those are usually missing, especially on European releases, but I get what you're saying, and longer edits without fade outs are definitely better!
@@AK12king swear it’s fake advertising on both the bluray set from 2016 and the 4k set from this year. Both state the episodes as being “the original NBC Broadcast versions” Wich they are not. The finale episode of Friends season 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 oringally aired as 1 hour episodes. Here they are presented with missing footage even from the NBC version to acomidate for the episode being split in two and needing to fit a 21 min episode. they have the new “next time on friends” and “previously on friends” segments (not featured on the og nbc edits!!) further taking up time from the 21 mins allotted. meaning more footage needed cut to allow for those recap scenes. As if these were the syndicated versions or something.

@@LennyNero2019 good choice!!!
DVD is better! I like having the extra scenes.
Just checked HBO Max and the new 4K restoration has the Blu-ray cut 🙃
As expected by almost everyone, more or less. Thanks!
