    like that busbar idea and how u connect them together ;) the cable sleves i like alot. they hide the uggliest cablest and make it tidy. for the contacts between packs. if u think the distance is to much in between use copper pipe. i have done that in another install where the packs where to far apart and didnt want to bend the busbars.

    • @HBPowerwall
      @HBPowerwall  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Now I have to agree this will be covered in next video that's in production atm. Was going for double fuses but the stronger wire on one end adds to the strength of the whole pack. So it's one of those tradeoffs I thinks.

      HBPowerwall yeap. keep up the work m8!! it might be that i have one of those batrium systems my way too. it seem damn good and this was the only one so far that came close to my demands. so will be running it untill i get my own up.

      Did you order one? How awesome is that! lol I'm far from an expert on this type of thing learning slowly as I go.. The more you dig the more it can do!

    looking good also if you do that to every pack you have that will be a lot of work. Also the shrink wrap looks pretty good . Maybe a little OCD :) shrink one down and see if it looks better it should. Have a great day.

    I like those busbars. They're similar to mine. That BMS is super fancy. I wonder if it increases the available capacity.

    • @HBPowerwall
      @HBPowerwall  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love them too, work so well and cheap! It will definitely make ALL the capacity usable more safely I can't wait to get it onto my big packs but I need to trust it first hence the workshop testing.

    Hope to see a active balancing soon :)

    • @HBPowerwall
      @HBPowerwall  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Christian Frericks active balancing on these cells ummm no thanks they would constantly be working at 100 percent. On a really deep discharge the cells can be more than 1/2v difference I think that would defiantly be less efficient than just passive balancing.

    Is there a video anywhere where you discuss why you chose to parallel many batteries, then series them, rather than putting many in series and then paralleling the result?

    Cheaper shrink wrap try using two liter bottles they are stronger and more secure.

    Hope you can go over the advantages and disadvantages of using a BMS. That's my main dilemma right now.

    • @RobinCernyMitSuffix
      @RobinCernyMitSuffix 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A BMS is essential for a large battery bank. Of course there are people who are yelling "If you have good healthy and balanced cells you don't need a BMS and/or a balancing". But you know what? The battery system on the International Space Station has also a BMS who does balancing, and these guys know what they doing. Go figure ;)

    • @HBPowerwall
      @HBPowerwall  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disadvantages: Three pairs of worn out flip-flops from walking back and forth manually checking Advantages: None yet, haven't installed it on my bank - but looks horribly promising :)

    • @whatthefunction9140
      @whatthefunction9140 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the core argument against a bms is that it increases the complexity and instead of checking cell voltages you are checking if the bms is still working...

    I understand everything you're doing I'm new to this so could you please tell me where you get your battery holders and your LCDs LEDs whatever they are. I guess I need a list of all the parts you use. I have a 1.3 KW solar array and feed directly to the grid through my inverter. I'm wanting to change over to have battery storage along the line of what you have I just don't quite know how to do it all yet.

      with this concept you could easily remove poor performing batteries with just a few to pop them out.

    Does the Batrium "thing" balance? - and what's the difference between active and passive balancing?

    • @HBPowerwall
      @HBPowerwall  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now I'm not an expert - active - when each cell constantly passes current to one another to stay 'balanced' Passive - is only at a given voltage will it start to 'burn off' power to bring all cells to the same voltage.

    • @FullSendPrecision
      @FullSendPrecision 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool. So the Batrium DOES balance?

    • @HBPowerwall
      @HBPowerwall  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does :) As well as a whole lot more. Cold climate, have an EV and your batteries are cold Just ask the BMS to pre-warm them :)

    • @FullSendPrecision
      @FullSendPrecision 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. I'm looking at building just a 4S 12v package lifepo4 system and am in the research phase of things. I'll have to start digging into the Batrium docs if I can find them. That site needs a technical writer!

    • @jaronware5738
      @jaronware5738 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The BMS will balance the cells to any configured value, there are also options for it to remote throttle the inverter/charger regulating the power in to the cells. If desired another feature can be enabled to have the cells adjust to a matching voltage not just at the target top of charge level when the pack is idle.

    have you had to refurbish one of your 80 cell packs yet (due to a drop in total cell capacity)?

    • @HBPowerwall

      Several, because I'm out of space I'm replacing or upgrading packs to bring the overall quality up

    • @honeybadger6127
      @honeybadger6127 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      can you do a video demonstrating this... how you go about finding failed cells in the 80 cell packs after you suspect the total capacity is low (or perhaps you already have)?

  • @eoincaldwell823
    @eoincaldwell823 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your big lug crimps, here is a way to test you have a good crimp, so make up a test crimp the same way you connect up a battery crimp and cut it in half across the connection, and it should be solid in the centre with no air voids, that means your squeezing the crimp with the correct amount of copper in the lug, and your crimping tool is working correctly with the correct amount of hydraulic pressure to the lug

    How many amps may be draining from each cell? Are those thin wires enough for that?

    • @HBPowerwall
      @HBPowerwall  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      at max load 80amps on 30kWh pack it's 0.333 amps per 'cell' Those wires are more than enough :)

    @acd4807 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    whats your fuses' wire thickness ? And do you calculate fuses thickness for a single cell ?

    is that bms not a bit light for that amp hour rating pro 4v pack?? in my opinion 65 ma is nothing for that huge 4v pack??...

    • @HBPowerwall
      @HBPowerwall  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrBugsier5 it was balancing at 1.75 a for 14 plus hours :) didn't go above 4.2v so guess it's ok for now. Time will tell for sure. Might change with 100amps of charging :)

    • @MrBugsier5
      @MrBugsier5 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      whell, , 1,75 ist that mutch off a load to it to... lol, but again , i/m used to huge lead acid packs... lol

    • @HBPowerwall
      @HBPowerwall  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      max is 2amps better than the 40ma balance 200amp max bms I've got before! Once balanced how much time per day do you think they'll be balancing for - 10 min - 1/2 an hour is about all it'll need across the whole pack I thinks... Well, I hope!

    • @ahaveland
      @ahaveland 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +HBPowerwall That would be my concern too, that the BMS looks a bit light - a situation could arise where it doesn't have enough oomph to pull a stray pack back into line, but as you say, 2A is better than 40mA!
      It'll be interesting to see how it gets on, and I'm sure you'll soon notice if it struggles to keep up! :-)

    • @HBPowerwall
      @HBPowerwall  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hell yes, I'll notice (has 10 years data logging) then I'll video it and upload - But if you look at the way chargers work - top of charge they ramp right down my PCM60X is about 2-5a when approaching the top of the charge. This is all learning - Current settings I have it set to 4.1v and soon be changing to 4.0 volts per cell so still have 0.2v for buffer

    At 0.5 amp will take ages to balance cell 1 ?

    • @HBPowerwall
      @HBPowerwall  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the issue is more with the totally inadequate charger I'm using that isn't really up to the job. That and cell one was almost a volt different than the other two.. making the workload on the Longmon a little heavier than usual

    • @station240
      @station240 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Way better than the 0.04 amp the ebay BMSs are limited to. As pete says elsewhere in the discussion, max for this BMS is 2A.

    You really should of gone the extra mile and re-wrapped those batteries, it would have taken you mins and not only would they look better but you get a better inspection of the battery... often dents and other undesirables are well hidden. Also... would had been better, safer and faster to weld the joints using a cheap pulse welder. Just my 2 cents.
