My ol'man was an extra in this movie, he was a "professional" arm wrestler back in the day. The Las Vegas tournament was an actual tournament that they used as a backdrop in the film. My dad was there to compete and ended up with a good 5 to 10 seconds of screen time losing to Stallone. My dad was the coolest person in the world in my eyes just because he arm wrestled Stallone!

  • @MarceloGarcia9

I feel the exact same way about this movie. I never knew it was so loathed until the mid 90’s in my teen years. After seeing how bad my taste for movies was in the 80’s by rewatching Garbage Pail Kids, I decided to watch this one to make sure this didn’t turn out to be the same. Thankfully, it still was a great father/son film with arm wrestling. Definitely a product of its time but dammit if I still didn’t thoroughly enjoy it. I don’t care what anyone says, this is definitely in my top 5 Stallone films.

You have done a great service here. The arm wrestling world thanks you! By the way, it's growing fast thanks to Devon Larrat, Larry Wheels and others. Not to mention the greatest armor of all time, John Brzenk. Who this movie was loosely based on. Four decades of dominance. Almost unheard of. Look them up and check it out! As far as this movie goes, I have a great memories as a child. I was probably 12 when it came out. And I loved arm wrestling. Ya it's got a bit of that 80's 🧀 but it also has some really great stuff. And the soundtrack is amazing. The story with Stallone's son, his rise to the top, overcoming all adversity that was thrown him, a father-in-law that never accepted you, the loss of his wife... It's all relatable stuff. He's a blue collar guy that just wants to work hard and be with his kid. Most of us can feel that. He is a man's man. Not some white knight cancel culture simp of today. He's what we all should aspire to be, a man of culture. He's kicking a$$ and taking names. The good old days. And the arm wrestling stuff is fantastic. With it being a growing sport today, this certainly has a special place in most arm wrestlers hearts. If you haven't seen it, check it out. It's a great blast from the past and really unique as there are no other movies like this.

Chalk me up as another guy who loved this movie as a kid. I was legitimately worried for Stallone when I saw all those crazy guys he was up against, and especially when he went up against the final boss at the end.
Never knew it was a flop until now. What were the audiences of the 80s thinking ignoring this movie? I watched it again as an adult a while back and it still held up. Definitely an underrated 80s classic!

Over the Top is one of those movies I point to when I talk about it being entirely okay to unironically like and enjoy bad movies. Right up there with my other perennial favorite bad movies like The Pirate Movie, Rustler's Rhapsody, Zorro: The Gay Blade, Hello Again, the Dream Team, and Crazy People. No one's ever going to look at these films and think, "Man, how did this not win an Oscar?" (Not unironically, anyway.) But man, they're some of my favorites, anyway. Love those '80s low- to mid- budget films.

This was such a refreshing take on an unbelievably underrated movie. Over The Top gets its internet chatter from being on online cheese lists and B-movie put-downs. Great video. I recently watched this film. It was very entertaining, especially the guy who beat Lincoln Hawks the first time. That guy eating a cigar and drinking oil (WTF). Honestly, the film could have been a fantastic film if Canon & Sly fixed two things: (1) explain why Lincoln leaves his family (He never fully explains why he left. The audience would at least understand why he left, instead of being a deadbeat dad.) & (2) take out that stupid part where Lincoln goes to jail and signs his son’s parental rights to his father in law. (Lincoln could have just left to arm wrestling contest after the funeral. Later, his son finds the letters & leaves to find his father. In addition, the scene where the father in law bribes Lincoln to take money and truck would make sense.)

After I got older and after having played in many different tournaments over the years I realized one day while watching this movie that Bull got robbed. It was a "Double Elimination" tournament. The announcer says multiple times "remember folks you must lose twice". Being Hawk came from the loser bracket he would have had to beat Bull twice to win but he didn't. Still love this movie but it is what it is. Bull got robbed and didn't even seem to care

He was originally going to play the bad guy in the movie, but they decided the guy was so huge that nobody would believe Stallone could beat him, so they went with Rick Zumwalt, who had been champ the previous year.

I remember seeing this as a kid. I actually enjoyed it a lot. Even though the story and plot does sound corny and cheesy. The truth the three actors Sylvester Stallone, David Mendenhall, and especially the late Robert Loggia are giving their all and doing pretty stellar performances. Even though Loggia's Character seems the antagonist and it could be made as a one dimensional bad guy. Instead Loggia played him actually as a sympathetic character he is not dividing father and son due to his ego instead he does it because he feels this is best for his grandson and he wants the best for his grandson. And yes Kenny Loggins song is great. I actually tear up hearing the song.

I always liked how they stack the deck heavily in Stallone's favor through the various interviews shown in between matches. Virtually all the other arm wrestlers are rude and arrogant loudmouths, with the head bad guy freely admitting he doesn't want to just beat Stallone, but to cripple him permanently for daring to challenge him, and that one of his greatest pleasures is breaking people's arms in matches. Meanwhile, Stallone is his usual humble, soft-spoken self, who wants to win because he desperately needs the prize money and the free truck.

I preferred the lesser known sequel: Kramer vs Kramer vs Godzilla.

I grew up with my dad introducing me to every Stallone movie as a young kid. My friends loved spending movie night at my dad's house. Rated R movies were a must! After the Rockys, Rambos, and Cobra,... Over the Top was the one I always enjoyed. Rivaled only by maybe Tango and Cash. But they all are a memorable part of my childhood and the bond I had with my dad.

My good friends dad was competing in this and had a short cameo in the film. I was 16 when this came out and got into competitive arm wrestling because of this film.

Trucker bonds with son by taking him on the road as he competes in unusual sport. Over The Top or Real Steel?
Yep, the robot boxing film was essentially an undated version of Over The Top.

The movie is VERY over the Top and I love it. Bought it for $5 in a combo dvd from Walmart and loved it ever since. Pure 80s vibes but youre right, Sly plays a very unique tough guy that has the vulnerabilities of like a 70s tough guy.

Unironically one of my fav 80's movies, caught it a bunch of times on cable growing up, I even own a Bonneau hat. Really has an anime feel with all the comic book-like characters.
