Nikon Z6III EVF Fault: The Curse has Returned

  • I was originally going to composite the old thumbnail into the video, but it turns out that's difficult and I'm lazy, so you're getting this poor effort instead 🙈
    Yes, the curse is apparently back. I think I'm up to a 50/50 ratio of working/broken cameras I've bought now, which is...something. This time it takes the form of a vertical line in the electronic viewfinder on the Z6III.

    Last year the Atomos Ninja V had a faulty fan, which is what I was referring to in this video. Shortly after making this video, it bricked itself completely🙈

      Me too. I have this "skill" in finding the rarest faults in code and hardware.
      I try to pay with face recognition (yes that is a thing here, either face or QR code, no cash or credit cards) at supermarkets, and the checkout machine just froze on me, TWICE ! Once I was trying a motion tracking game and crashed it too. Also when I try to check others code, it just fails (if I am the one pressing run). But it is a good thing when I am trying to replicate bugs when nobody else could find it
      But the equipment I own and look after all work perfectly fine, though sometimes pretty scratched up. I guess though I abuse things, I am taking enough care while others simply let it run until it crashes.

    Ah just a dead row, happens with displays. I had one show up (dead row) on a replacement LCD panel that came in a couple months ago, just had it swapped out.

    A survey of professional photojournalist's most-used cameras, was revealing. The majority preferred prosumer cameras that had been around for a while, over recent pro offerings. They typically had a lower megapixel count, which makes sense as most images will end up in newsprint or on websites with limited resolution, and take less time to transfer and space to store. Your gear issues reminds me of comic writer Alan Moore, whose enthusiastic typing style reduced normal keyboards to trash in days. The problem was solved by acquiring one made for environments like heavy construction and steel foundries.

      Haha very true. I did once own a used Canon 1Ds MkIII, which I figured would be a nice reliable workhorse, and immediately discovered it had a shutter bounce issue that had been there since it was new and the previous owner had never noticed it 😑 I don't think they'd ever shot it at a fast enough shutter speed to see the issue, in 10 years!
      So far my Z9 has been really solid. Here's hoping it stays that way 😅

  • @jpdemora

    will you still keep using the Lumix for video? or will you replace it with your Nikon z6iii?

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may  23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good question! I am ultimately planning on swapping my video stuff over to the Z6III, assuming I get a working one 😅 I probably still prefer the S5IIX for video somewhat, but maintaining two separate lens mount collections has become a bit of a pain in the arse lately, and there's been a few times where I've needed a lens on one system but only owned it on the other 😑
      In the past I'd seriously considered going all-in on Panasonic instead, but there just isn't a high-end camera I can use for my wildlife photography, unfortunately, and they don't seem to be in a rush to make such a thing.
      In an ideal world I'd keep both but I don't have the budget for that at the moment.

    I have some of those also. I think it happens if you are a first adopter, and use a lot or tech. I had focus issues with Fuji GFX and the lug problem and Z8 dropping. No issues with Z6iii yet.

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Oof that’s bad luck to get the lug issue. Thankfully I picked up my Z9 after they fixed the lens release button issue on that one 😅 This one’s a bit of a pain because I’ve been really enjoying the Z6III since it arrived, feels a bit weird to be without it for a while now.

  • @waveland
    @waveland 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Sorry to hear about your Z6III troubles. Probably a QC issue they aren’t quite geared up to catch because of the new panel in the EVF. Hopefully Wex can get you squared away quickly. At least here in the US my local retailer has already gotten two decent sized shipments which hasn’t quite closed the backlog but Nikon seems to be moving at a faster pace than we’ve seen in previous releases.

    and it's even worse when you live in a very low income environment like me, and I've been saving money for two years to buy Fuji X-T3, bought in 2020, but at first there was a flex cable of shutter button defect, thankfully covered by warranty but after warrant repair there was like a scratch mark on sensor and I was terrified, but it was just a smudge from official repair service lol
    then rear command dial broke

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Aw man that sucks, especially as I assume there's a longer turnaround for repairs for you. The X-T3 is a great camera though (when it isn't in need of repair) - my dad uses his all the time. I hope you were able to get the dial repaired too.
      Since I made this video I've also had an Atomos Ninja V recorder completely die on me 😭
      Maybe we need exorcisms 🙈

    This sounding like it's potentially going to be a massive recall, but Nikon will try and keep a lid on it for as long as they can and this is no good for them right now . This vertical line with dead pixels is a common problem in cheap Led Toshiba and similar budget TV panels, I wonder who is the manufacturer of the Z6III's new super bright EVF ? be good to dig a bit and find out .

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may  23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm pretty sure it's a Sony unit, but unfortunately it's not listed on the Nikon spare parts website yet, which might have provided some clues. Part number is 13T20 (which is handily listed in the newly released Z6III repair manual).

    Nikon's QC issues aren't limited to this latest release. I'm thinking the company's restructuring, plus having their manufacturing plant moved to Thailand caused QC problems for them and their customers. After having the Z8 and experiencing another (unreported) mount issue, then deciding to return the system, it's made me suspicious of the brand in general.

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I tend to have issues with basically every brand I buy 😅, but Nikon does seem to have had a bad few years of product launches requiring hardware fixes/recalls. Curiously, fewer software issues in my experience, compared to other brands. At least they've been good at issuing recalls when required and sorting out the problems.

    Jokes aside, find a way to check if you or your living/working place have high amount of static electricity (this miiiiight be a cause of your “curse”). As for Z6iii looks like a row of sub pixels died, that happens, definitely manufacturing defect

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Haha I thankfully don't have too much trouble with static, as it's quite high humidity here most of the time. I _do_ have some mains power issues sometimes (mostly brownouts), but I run all my server equipment, computers, and music gear off UPS units these days because of that. Buying a UPS has to be up there with a router for least-exciting-way-to-spend money but they've saved me a lot of hassle over the past few years 😅

      My original Z7 is made in Japan, reluctant to buy any new Nikon as all Nikon cameras are made in Thailand now. I don't think there is so much of an issue with build or cheap quality materials, more an issue of sample variation. Kinda like a lottery if you will get a good one or not.

      @@haydennettleton3272 Yeah this has been my experience so far too. My Z9 has been rock-solid at least. And regarding AF vs Panasonic @alphaandomega2709, from my testing so far the Z6III is quite a bit better than the S5IIX in terms of speed and interface. Not sure on accuracy, as the slow sensor of the S5IIX hampers its performance quite a bit - I'd be curious to see a Panasonic with a stacked sensor of some description so I could compare the AF system overall to Nikon's 🤔
