0:34 Never mention that there IS a twist to a newbie. 😏 Whenever someone tells me that, I spend too much time trying to figure that out, and miss other stuff. Heh.

Exactly right, also to say a big twist and its a mystery movie makes the watcher really try to figure out this "twist". Being old as hell and saw in theaters, all we ever said to other people who hadn't seen it yet was "great ending"

@@meanstreetmookI’m old as hell and also saw it in the theater.
I remember turning around wanting to see the faces of the movie goers and to a one, all had their mouths open.

There are also several references in various shows and movies where there is an elusive criminal and someone will ask "Who is this guy, Keyser Soze?"

Benicio Del Toro knew his character died early, so he did the weird accent so he would be remembered.

Kevin Pollock is one of the best character actors in the movie business. When you look up the sheer number of movies he's been in it's impressive.

Kobayashi was PETE Postlethwaite. Also known from the 1993 Oscar-winning film 'In the Name of the Father' co-starring Daniel Day Lewis. He was also in 'Jurassic Park 2 The Lost World' in 1997 and the Ben Affleck-directed film 'The Town' in 2010.

Nick making aggressive eye contact with the camera and raising his eyebrows when he said "should be a fun time"...IM DEAD! Can't wait to see what Jen thinks of the infamous twist. Also, Suzy Amis is James Cameron's wife, I believe they met while filming Titanic.

Biggest clue-as to who Keyser Soze is is he and Kevin Spacey have the same initials. BTW, this is vintage Gabriel Byrne being sexy as hell. ❤ one fine actor and man!

In retrospect I caught a lot of the clues, but just thought they were continuity errors. But they weren't.
For those who like this I recommend "The Spanish Prisoner." Similar kind of suspense movie but very different.

Even though I knew how it ended it was is still a great film

Another great one. A bit of UBER geekdom regarding this film.
The ORIGINAL US release cut was pulled from ALL cinemas after only the first weekend. A new cut was shipped out to everyone over the weekend. But the original cinema cut was shown. The reason it was pulled was someone in production made a BIG mistake. If you watch the opening credits you'll see Spacey's name just listed. However in the original cinema cut the opening credits read "& Kevin Spacey as Keizer Suzy."
    Oops.
Hope that got a chuckle. Hope everyone is having a great week & much love to all from here in the UK

Didn't you watch Scary Movie? If so, you saw the twist (surprise) ending for this movie in that one. That's the unfortunate thing about watching movies out of order. But this is one of my favorite re-watchable movies: the acting and the script, soooo good.

Saw the spoof part in Scary Movie before actually seeing it. This and No Country For Old Men blew my father's mind!
American Beauty is an interesting one!
I remember when my Eng Lit teacher tried showing the class Shane, we laughed so much because of how different it was to the book that she gave up. Should've showed us To Kill A Mockingbird instead. That was good!
    All memorable movies worth watching!

The guy who played Kobayashi, Pete Postlethwaite, was said by Stephen Spielberg to be the best actor in the world.
This relatively minor part doesn't really confirm this, but other movies DO!!

The Mumster outsmarted me! I never suspected Kint (spoiler alert for almost 30 year old movie... lol) Well done, I have to say. Then again, I was in my early '20s when this movie originally came out, I didn't have the benefit of experience (or - sigh! - internet memes...), so I don't consider my failure all that critical. :)
Also, Pollak! WOW! See him in this movie, and in "A Few Good Men" - like night and day. Really makes you appreciate him as an actor, I didn't even think both characters were played by the same guy, they're that different. Most full-fledged actor actors can't do transformations like that, and Pollak was originally in stand-up comedy from what I understand. Just a wicked natural ability he's got, I suppose.

this movie came out before Fight Club and 6th Sense, Kevin Spacey was not well known yet, and the movie was not marketed as having a twist, so I feel okay about not suspecting Verbal Kent when I watched it at the theatres

  • @kathyastrom1315
    @kathyastrom1315 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The only time we see “Verbal” have an honest reaction to the cops is when the one cop comes in the office with the name “Keyser Soze.” He blurts out “Shit!!” And then he starts spinning an expanded tale.

Such a cool movie. too bad Kevin Spacey had the issues he's had, he's a very good actor. "Swimming With Sharks" is a good one. Chaz Palminteri is in a good movie with Robert De Niro called "A Bronx Tale". A pretty cool Stephen Baldwin movie is "Threesome". and of course Benicia in "Sicario", but you guys have definitely seen that one. The ending is for sure spoofed in "Scary Movie".

Verbal was a known con-artist in the criminal world. Based on how easily he made up a story from things he saw in that office, we know that he was probably very good at being a conman. He probably only allowed himself to be caught so he could spend time in prison and have a criminal record.
We can assume that the Söze backstory was the real one. (Take a look at his face telling that story on a rewatch.)
He went through all that trouble to kill Marquez personally, but I don't think he knew that there was a survivor from the boat, who told the cops what Söze looked like, thus making the whole thing moot. Everyone was supposed to die, and Verbal could slither away, possibly becoming Verbal again in the future, if needed. He's really going to have to go underground now. The Roger Verbal Kent persona is now no good.
I think the thing that bothers me the most about the movie is that even though we were following the story of these 5 criminals, we came to care what happened to them, and were rooting for them to succeed. Then we find out that we don't even know this crew. We don't know if Keaton was trying to turn his life around, and just got caught up in this 'last job' or if he never turned from being a bad guy. Everything we learned about them and this caper was told by a unreliable narrator. All their conversations and reasons for doing things are now unknown to us.

This last bit is the biggest (and greatest) deal with this movie. You get to know the people in the gang, their motivations, and you want them to get their comeuppance - then at the very end you realize it was probably all fake from start to finish. You have no idea what these people really were like, or, what they did. Really fabulous plot twist ending, so well done.
Both Kevin Spacey and Bryan Singer later turned out to be problematic people, but this movie shows the talent both have at what they do. This is certainly one of my all-time favorite movies (although I do have a great many of those! heh), as well as one of my fav 1990s movies too. Another 1990s one with Spacey which also is fabulous is L.A. Confidential, btw.
