scratch resistance ..it has more to do with the last protective layer than anything else. high end vinyl is usually a bit more resistant than laminate .. although you can get a high end laminate which can be more durable than a good vinyl.. the key thing here in my opinion is that vinyl is flexible and has a bit if give to it ..so if something was scratching or fell on it there is less of a chance of damage due to some give and deflection in the vinyl..as well it tends to not 'pop out' as much as laminate because it is more stable under humidity and temperature changes and moves along its joints a bit easier.

Manufacturers recommend using area rugs and shades in rooms with a lot of natural sunlight. They also recommend changing around your furniture layout about once per year.
..vinyl flooring is slightly more susceptible to sunlight than vinyl ..but nothing compared to hardwood..hardwood is well known for fading .. vinyl can be used in sunlight..it will fade ..but not for a very long time..i would worry more about sections becoming hot too fast and cooling too fast..both vinyl and laminate are susceptible to 'pop outs' in this condition especially if there are some heavy pieces of furniture involved

My mother put in laminate floors and I really can’t stand the feel of walking on them. It’s very plastic sounding in my opinion and you can hear the underlayment as you walk across the floor. It sounds like a plastic bag under there. She had this installed through her interior decorator and it was very expensive so I can’t imagine that it was a poor installation or low end laminate.
It sounds like the floor wasn't even. Laminate should not sound like anything is underneath but solid floor. Not an expert in any way but it sounds like the installation was the issue.
He said that most laminate can be simply laid out on the existing floor. Does the laminate have a sticky backing? Does it bend easily or is it stiff like real wood?
Anytime laminate gets a lot of water on it you need to repair the effected planks by replacing them. Which costs money. Vinyl plank on the other hand is water resistant or water proof depending on the quality of vinyl plank. -Guy who does floors for a living.
@@califdad4 that can refer to the thickness of the floor itself. Also there are different thickness on the wear layers. A cheap floor would have a 5 mil wear layer an ok quality will have 8 mil wear layer and then medium to good it 10-13 mil wear layer which is the protective layer.

MY concern with the vinyl, is with the samples I have of the luxury vinyl, it has a sparkle to it as normal vinyl flooring does. Will that make it look like just regular vinyl flooring when it is laid? I don't want it to look like vinyl. Also I was reading that it can tear easier than laminate - just like normal vinyl can when moving furniture.. I have had pergo for 18 years and it has held up super super super and the only buckling from water is where I had some plants and didn't realize it was getting water on it. Other than that, even though it isn't the 24 hour water-resistant that they have now, it has held up awesome with kids spilling and leaving ice cubes on the floor to melt and dog dishes and all that. One other thing, is I also read that the vinyl is colder than the laminate. Anyway, I am having a tough time deciding and these are some issues I am struggling with. Any help?? Opinions??
Great questions, Lorenda! How realistic the vinyl looks will definitely depend on the quality of vinyl. The higher the quality, the more realistic it'll look to wood. If the vinyl can tear, it probably is an issue of quality. We have vinyl installed in our common area and have not had any issues related to tearing! We have a lot of great posts related to vinyl at our blog- www.flooringinc.com/blog/?s=vinyl&submit=Go I hope this helps answer some of your questions. People usually charge by the square foot for labor. I don't know about popping floor, I don't think it really happens unless someone doesn't leave any space around the edge. Or if water sits on it for a long time.
Laminate is just awful. I put in laminate 10 yrs ago and they all need to be replaced. Any water not sopped up immediately leaves damage by causing the edges to bubble. Looks horrible. I have a dog who has a damaged bladder and has bladder accidents. My lamented flooring is being damaged.I am thinking of getting vynl put over the lamented flooring.
You didn't mention vinyl can't be installed where sunlight is expected (or you have to shade it the whole time)
Hi John,
You bring up an excellent point about sunlight! This is true for just about every floor type (with the exception of tile). Manufacturers recommend using area rugs and shades in rooms with a lot of natural sunlight. They also recommend changing around your furniture layout about once per year.
Flooring Inc ahah, I just learned that hardwood can change color with sun... still, more useable than buckled vinyl
Tinting your windows with a UV blocking tint can solve that problem.
..vinyl flooring is slightly more susceptible to sunlight than vinyl ..but nothing compared to hardwood..hardwood is well known for fading .. vinyl can be used in sunlight..it will fade ..but not for a very long time..i would worry more about sections becoming hot too fast and cooling too fast..both vinyl and laminate are susceptible to 'pop outs' in this condition especially if there are some heavy pieces of furniture involved
Here in vegas we put solar screens, it blocks most of the UV rays giving our lvp more life. And hardwood is not recommended here maybe due to extreme low humidity and high temperatures.
Having carpet removed and trying to decide on new flooring. Do you know anything about porcelain tile flooring
Hello, yes we do :) Here are our options: ecs.page.link/N2X2X

Great help I have three dogs and uplifting carpet at the moment to put down vinyl option. I think it will be better for me with the dogs.. 😉👍
Get rid of the dogs
@@007kash007 ... well I think the dogs make better companions than the carpet. rarely does carpet put you in a happy mood like a dog(s) can; or entertain you like a dog. Are dogs work...yes, and can they be a handful with all the upkeep, pee and poop, yes; but people rarely share photos of their carpet. All carpet does is just lay there, nothing more...
Great video. I believe I have vinyl since the maintenance guy said he’d have to remove half of the bedroom to see if there’s mold growth under the flooring due to it being interlocked?
There’s some bubbling happening towards the edges where the boards connect to the next and I’m afraid there’s moisture (which means there could be possible mold) what would you suggest to be sure there’s no mold without them having to come in and remove half the bedroom floor?
Hello Megan, thank you for reaching out to us ~ You will not know if there is mold unless you remove the material to be able to see under it. If you do end up having to replace your material please do not hesitate to reach out to us, have a wonderful rest of the day!
I would guess if there is bubbling at the ends its laminate
Thank you so much for your video. I really agree with what you explained in the video. All in all, both vinyl and laminate have their own pros and cons and they are useful in different ways.
Laminate wouldn't be a good choice for bathroom doe to high moisture exposure. Engineered would be the choice, some are 100% water proof.
You're right! Though they now make 100% waterproof laminate flooring. There is also 100% waterproof core vinyl flooring as well!
Msi.makes great products in the luxury vinyl arena. We're looking to get the msi braly color for our master bath. Its 100%waterproof and easy to.jnstall. two of our bathrooms will get this flooring and depending in price, we may extend it to the rest of our house.

@@FlooringInc Who makes engineered hardwood floors that are waterproof and really strong?
I needed this, thanks much.
Not an expert in any way but it sounds like the installation was the issue.
great info, save me money! thanks
Excellent video and very informative thank you
He said that most laminate can be simply laid out on the existing floor. Does the laminate have a sticky backing? Does it bend easily or is it stiff like real wood?
It's as stiff as real wood.
What is better for a basement?
Great question! Waterproof vinyl flooring is usually better for basements.
Dirt flooring is all the rage in LA right now that or concrete. Actualy helps save on heating bills and stays cool on the summer. Kinda cool
You said laminate needs more maintenance but you didn't actually explain why and what you have to do.
Anytime laminate gets a lot of water on it you need to repair the effected planks by replacing them. Which costs money. Vinyl plank on the other hand is water resistant or water proof depending on the quality of vinyl plank. -Guy who does floors for a living.
@@02rtjawn thanks, question I see mm Numbers 4,5 8. ,No understand the numbers in laminate but have no idea what I'm looking at . Thanks again
@@califdad4 that can refer to the thickness of the floor itself. Also there are different thickness on the wear layers. A cheap floor would have a 5 mil wear layer an ok quality will have 8 mil wear layer and then medium to good it 10-13 mil wear layer which is the protective layer.
@@02rtjawn thanks
Brandon Godoy my friend, so what would be your choice for a bedroom regardless price? Which would be the best all around option ?
Thanks
So helpful. Helped me to choose.
As a grown up, I’m ok not having a soundtrack when someone is talking to me. I came to learn about flooring and not for music. Alternately, I could have searched for music.
If floating floor, LVP will not hold up as well as Laminate.
Great breakdown, thanks :)
I would go for laminate.
Thanks for sharing. This is a great video.
which flooring is good for 2500 sq ft LVP or Laminate ?
Hello, both can work, however, we would need to know more about your install. What is the application?
Flooring Inc omg so do I get vinyl floor or laminate or just get wood???
I used to mob daily is vinal ok becoz I used water to clean ?
Hello Nasreen, you can clean vinyl with water and it should not hurt the martial at all. To ensure you have the proper cleaning method reach out to the company you purchased your floorng from.
Thank you for the info.

Love this video 😍. Thank you.
Great quality video!
Thank you!
Great video, thanks!
We have a lot of great posts related to vinyl at our blog- www.flooringinc.com/blog/?s=vinyl&submit=Go
I hope this helps answer some of your questions. Of course, you can always give us a call or start a live chat on our blog and we're happy to help!
Cant hear what you are saying over the music
for home renovations, I think the quick and least expensive way is to go vinyl
everyone says laminate is cheaper
@@jaybefaulky4902 Laminate is roughly the same price for similar quality. Alot of people think it's cheaper because there are alot of low-quality, cheap laminate options.
We've had both laminate first now vinyl. Vinyl all the way!!!!!!
@@jaybefaulky4902 that laminate stuff can pop loose and dirt builds up in the cracks
@@eddt430 I'm deciding between laminate or vinyl. But I'm aiming for vinyl more
Vinyl is the only was to go ! It’s almost scratch proof Laminate can chip if you drop something heavy on it. Just install 900 ft of vinyl piece of cake.
Good info, thank you!
I still just don't e get it... trying to find the best floor for pets that is the cheapest.
Solitaire Morales vinyl. Easier to clean and maintain and if there’s damage (unusual because it’s pretty durable), you can just replace the piece that’s damaged. I’m getting vinyl for my new home. We have two huskies and part time inside dogs. (70% inside)
Amazing thank you
Be honest about laminate bulging with the slightest exposure to moisture. It is a waste of money.
Thank you for posting this opinion. We are having to replace an entire apartment with LVP installed one year ago and were told laminate would be a good option.
Another lie by the flooring industry
Very helpful! Thanks!
Would LVP be better option in the UK, in terms feeling less cold than laminate flooring.
Both will fill cold....even wood feels cold but it's the fact if moisture is a factor lvp is the better buy due to vynal core is waterproof vs osb cork ECT in laminate.
Wow! Very helpful. Thanks 😊
Hello, we want to make Heterogeneous Vinyl Flooring, request machine manufacturers to connect or leave contact details below.
Still can’t decide.. what would be best for a tiny house ? Kitchen/living room
If you're putting it in your kitchen, waterproof vinyl will be your best bet. Go with larger planks to make your house look more spacious.
Wow Thank you!
Hello, both will provide a firm surface - what you may want to do is add an underlayment. This way you are adding some shock absorbency for your joints.
U forgot laminant u need a saw to cut them vinyl u just need a utility knife
Thank you for the feedback
And the laminate makes noise walking on it
Background sound is too loud
Your background music is too loud and annoying
Soooo.....laminate is laminate and vinyl is vinyl. They both have 4 layers. That's it???
Vinyl is more water resistant.
I am a laminate floor installer here in Brazil coko concigo a letter of employment to work ai popping floor how and demand ai and great has work? How is the payment made and by the hour or by the work?
People usually charge by the square foot for labor. I don't know about popping floor, I don't think it really happens unless someone doesn't leave any space around the edge. Or if water sits on it for a long time.
GOOD INFO
Quickstep laminate is now water proof.
Talk about splitting hairs, I still don't see the real difference
Vinyl is lower cost, easier installation and maintenance.
Laminate can warp over time, vinyl tends to wear better
Thanks
Dude was high as fuck.
Laminate is just awful. I put in laminate 10 yrs ago and they all need to be replaced. Any water not sopped up immediately leaves damage by causing the edges to bubble. Looks horrible. Going the extra mile and getting real wood flooring that can be sanded and refinished. Should have done that 10 yrs ago.
The background music when you speak is so irritating.
so what's the pros and cons? lol
vinyl has that rubber look who makes it cheap looking
Thanks for your comment! Poor quality vinyl can look bad, but with today's technology, vinyl is looking better than ever! It's even 100% waterproof! Here are some great options: www.flooringinc.com/all-vinyl.html
Were talking about the luxury vinyl not that old style vinyl of the 70s. They are close to laminate in terms of looks
The higher priced Vinyls look really good and are 100%waterproof.

Two important facts not mentioned here, laminate is preferred for dog owners as its extremely resistant to dogs nails scratching the laminate, and vinyl floors offgas significant amounts of toxic chemicals into the air so your in home air quality is severely compromised for quite some time, nasty stuff!
I wonder if this is still true. I have heard stories from years ago... but they have restrictions on the chemicals used in vinyl flooring (in the EU but I expect in the USA as well).
@@lystic9392 I suppose all you have to do is put your nose directly on a piece of new vinyl right out of its box n inhale......n hope you dont pass out or get brain damage
LVP flooring is an oxymoron. And laminate flooring is cheap and plastic looking. I would never install either. Nothing is richer and more beautiful than hardwoods which last forever or a good engineered hardwood
laminate scratchs no good
For heaven's sake turn the music down
Had to laugh , it sounds like he is saying Lamminate instead of Lam in ate , oh well
you cannot compare laminate to hardwood..
Hi Alex,
Thanks for visiting and sharing your thoughts! As you can see from the title, this video compares laminate to vinyl rather than hardwood.
