I Changed One Thing in the Field (Landscape Photography)

  • Landscape photography is a beautiful thing, but sometimes it can be hard to get creative and find images and compositions that you're happy with. I was out with my Canon 5D MKIV, I had misty conditions which is perfect for photography, but I could not make any images. I was frustrated and ready to call it a day until I changed one thing: I took my camera out of the bag and kept it in my hand. Honestly, the difference this made was incredible.

Photo backpacks are great for hauling a load of gear over distance while protecting the gear from the elements. It does not make for easy access to the gear; it does not support spontaneity and in-fact acts as an inhibitor to image making, in my my experience. It also means that you must put your bag down on the wet ground or sand (at the ocean edge) to retrieve gear - not the best of ideas. Years ago, I adopted a belt system to carry lenses, filters, accessories around my waist and a "holster" style bag slung over one shoulder to carry the camera body with one lens attached. The other shoulder held the tripod. The belt system made my gear much more accessible in the field and I did find myself making more shots. The major vendors all have belt systems in their product ranges (ThinkTank, Lowepro, Kinesis Gear (a small shop in Utah that is my favored brand). Give one of those systems a try and see what they do for you Thomas.

Hi Thomas - we had our first snow fall today and I popped out with the camera thinking about some trees I've scouted several times. However, when I got there I just could not get any shots!! I continued walking and then came back the same route only to discover better light and a couple of shots 'appeared' that I had walked past earlier. They've turned out great and it just goes to show that you should focus on enjoying the walk in these circumstances and then re-focus. Thanks

Enjoyed the video. The creepy photographer comment reminded me of one afternoon at a park this fall. This park had a cluster of miniature trees of sorts that don't really go that far off the ground but rather spread sideways, and their foliage was very vibrant and still quite full. I was standing close looking at one of them for maybe half a minute when I suddenly realized that it had a person with a camera under it trying to shoot the sun coming through the leaves. As I walked further, I confirmed that every single tree in the cluster had its own photographer under it trying to shoot exactly the same thing. One of them glanced at my own camera and he looked ready to wrestle for his territory, if need be, so I gave him his space.

You're trying to hard sometimes Thomas. Just relax and don't put the pressure on yourself as you state @ 07:30. Also, that tree you have now shot three times @ 19:27. Well here's a challenge for you. Do a 12 Months of the Same Image project with that tree. Photograph it once every month for 12 months. Preferably around the same day/time every month, and from the same spot/composition. At the end of it all you'll have 12 awesome transition images of it thru all 4 seasons, and a possible calendar.

3:00] When you are 'feeling' that way, just turn on your eyeballs and start *looking.* Get out of your head and start looking. Today might have been the day you could have packed a macro lens. But even then, where is the color? where is the light? If it is not completely dark, it is somewhere. The shot of you opening your van door was a perfectly good photo - photos can be dark and low contrast too.
Ok, now let's wait and find out what the "one thing" actually turns out to be.
4:00] Oh! let's take the camera out of the bag! Let's try that! Ok, maybe someplace else really is better than here, but here will never work out if you don't take your damned camera out of the bag.
I never leave myself an excuse not to have my camera in the backpack. I have these little OP/TECH quick-release straps that attach to the shoulder straps of my backpack so even when I'm wearing my little [emphasis on little] backpack, my camera is alway hanging at about sternum level on my chest ready to take a photo. I set the straps just long enough that I can bring the viewfinder to my eye in landscape, if I want to take a shot vertically, I simply pop the quick-release on my right shoulder, if I need more camera than that I pop the other quick-release.
Being a bit of a dummy myself, I created a separate paracord 'dummy-cord' which runs from my left shoulder to the camera with its own little micro-carabiner so I can never accidentally drop my expensive camera below about the level of my belly-button but can still fully separate my camera from my body when I need to put it on the tripod. Then I dummy-cord the expensive camera to the tripod so I still cannot drop it more than about a foot and a quarter.
What is really cool about this particular setup is that because there are quick-releases between both right and left shoulder and camera, I can pop the quick-release on the right shoulder and my camera will automatically tuck itself in right at my left elbow as I walk so it is not bouncing around. Even better it will do the same thing with my monopod attached - even with one or to sections extended. When I don't want the monopod it clips to my belt just far enough behind it does not get in the way of walking.
When it is raining outside, or too foggy, or snowing, I have a little plastic shower-cap that I put over my camera as I am yomping at my normal 4-1/4mph pace. When I want to take a photo, or it stops precipitating i stuff it in my pocket along with my lens cap.
Ok, now let's wait and find out what the "one thing" turns out to be.
4:58] There is so much beauty in this scene - find the shot.
5:15] Whoa! Taking the camera out of the bag works! [every time it is tried... well, many times]
9:25] Oh dear, now the mist is thinning.
10:10] You are a hard nut Thomas, aren't you? Turn off the mind, turn on the eyeballs.
10:45] Yeah, my EF 85mm f1.2 my favorite lens, what a beast. f1.8 in the fog though? fog is like nature's own bokeh, right?. Maybe even f11, really ensharpen all of that bracken in the foreground to the maximum possible and see what happens.
Grab the shot, move on, just don't over-cook the shot.
15:00] Before I go, how about in addition to the 'square shot,' how about flipping the camera on its side and shooting portrait too? You don't seem to do that much, shoot landscapes in portrait, or turn around and take the back-shot, or point the camera straight up and look up through the branches into the sky. I live in a land of overlapping branches, often the only real shot to be taken is looking directly overhead up through the forest canopy. Eh, just a thought.

Another great video Tom. I am wondering if there is any news on the Fuji 617 situation.

Seeing the changes in that tree over only a few weeks was great! Where I live in Australia things don’t change much from season to season so I love seeing the more dynamic seasons around the world. The middle shot is my favourite, with the few leaves still dotted around. I’m glad you got your camera out to wander around with. It’s something I always do as I’m too lazy and otherwise I’d just hardly take a photo! 😄

What camera are you using there? Because you've got some really nifty tools on there that my old EOS 300D never had.

I think I heard someone say at one point...we should photograph what WE want. So, if you want to take a 1000 pictures of the one tree then do so, just keep in mind I might not want to look at all of them. Cheers!

That 'eye' doesn't quite compensate for the lack of medallions - maybe an opportunity to return next autumn for an image featuring both, perhaps?

Hey there Thomas! So I have to ask... are you NATURALLY a "Morning Person"??? I was going to ask Simon this as well.
As a photographer, I've struggled with this ALL of my life! When I saw the intro with your headlights in the dark, I thought, "damned you anyway... you... MORNING PERSON!!!" LOL 🤣

I have followed you for many years, and you have always had a positive aura around you. Watching your videos has always been inspiring and energizing. But that has changed. :(
I guess you, like all of us, are affected by the pandemic and perhaps the season. But I can not help feel that your videos lately have been low in energy, a feeling of low self-esteem around your qualities to create magical images or energy-creating failures.
It may be my reception that has changed, but I do not think so. I hope you find your way back to the humble but energetic person who drew me into your channel, to begin with.
    Take care!
    Stig

Its funny, I have been following you and Sean Tucker for quite some time. I'm not a photographer, but I find both channels inspiring and calming for similar but different reasons.
TH-cam has never recommended other photography channels or british countryside channels... until recently. So I gave a few a try.
Not to blow smoke where it's not needed, but as I'm not a photographer, photography is not something I really look at unless it's put in font of me. I've seen your photos, and always thought them genuinely impressive, you take the sorts of photos that make me want to go to that location and experience the feeling and the view. But that's all based on just the fact I liked them. As an artist mysel (I draw comics) I could see the quality in the shots... but no real point of reference in the grand scheme of photography other than that (yours and seans work are very different, as the only other photohgrapher I follow here).
No offence to any of these other channels, I am sure they are all at different stages in their journey, not all artists are created equal, and art is in the eye of the beholder.
But... I have to say, seeing some of the other work on youtube, and coming back to your videos, there is a gulf of difference here. To say your work is superior would be a dramatic understatement. I see a lot of people taking the sorts of photos I myself would take, compositionally at least. where as when I look at your channel, time after time I am flawed and think... "I just wouldn't have seen that image"
Your work truly is incredible.... and on top of that, I genuinely enjoy your content and openness...
    Thank you for the channel.

Watching you deal with photographing from behind a fence looked all too familiar -- because almost everything in the U.S. is behind a fence, or is private property.

Hi Thomas, I also have a 5D mk IV and noticed that you have an L-frame for portrait orientation. I have Manfrotto tripods & heads (and I love them) so what L-frame works for you, and could you suggest how I could get one to fit my kit.

Thom - you need to stop using that 10-24 on the Fuji the ultra wide distortion is really disturbing. Other than that love the video.
