Monster Hunter Stories is a pocket monster role-playing game originally released in Japan only for the 3DS on October 8th, 2016, with an HD mobile version released december 4th, 2017. I remember thinking that something like this would never actually make it over to the west in a time where Monster Hunter was getting more popular, but was still considered fairly niche.
Much to my surprise it would be about a year later, on September 8, 2017 that the west would be able to get their hands on this game for the 3DS and over a year later for mobile devices. I was shocked as this was a time before World and the cultural expansion of Monster Hunter as a series.

No mention of weapon combos? This game has weapon combos, just like regular Monster Hunter games. Doing three attacks in certain orders, depending on your weapon type, completes a combo for more damage. So sometimes you'll have to choose between completing a combo or picking the right response to a head-to-head fight (since monsters have preferences about what sort of attack they'll use most often, and memorizing those is essential). It's another unexpected layer of depth to a game with a lot going on already.

The thing I love most about this game is how it can make you change perspective on some monsters.
I wasn't a particularly big fan of stuff like Red Khezu, Bulldrome, Rathalos, Black Diablos and others... but I ended up appreciating them more than I could ever do in the main series or other MH games in general.

I love the fact that the monstie could think and act for themselves. This was a major selling point for me buying the game. In a Pokemon battle, the trainer calls all the shots. This doesn't have to be the case with Monster Hunter Stories. You can control most of what they do in battle; but for me it is more fun to allow them freedom. You can feel a real sense of comraderie between you and your team. Something I never truly felt in Pokemon.

You can actually do the battle speed up thing in the original 3DS release. The only change the HD version has is its removal of Epona and the higher resolution. I prefer the 3ds version myself.

Very underrated game. It has some notable flaws but as a first game in the series it’s surprisingly high quality. Just goes to show Monster Hunter all around is pretty quality.
Funnily enough, Capcom had pretty absurd expectations for the sales of this game, with them expecting 3 million copies to be sold. The game went on to sale slightly over 300,000 instead. They were likely banking on the explosion of games aimed at children that was occurring at the time with games like Yokai Watch. Sadly they were late to the party and the game released with little advertising nearing the end of the 3DS’ life with the child game boom ending quickly.
Interestingly enough while they originally expected that the game would sale well with children the majority of sales were with adults and the older audience, according to results posted by Media Crate shortly after the games launch. It attracted some of the Monster Hunter audience and didn’t really land with their original target demographic.
Normally when games sell so poorly, Capcom would dump them for a while, if not indefinitely, but it’s surprising that they actually are releasing a full fledged sequel. Based on information spread and also info shared by them in recent interviews, we can thank World and the recent healthy growth of JRPGs for Stories 2 being a thing. The shift to an older demographic and updated artstyle also shows this further. Along with the small but dedicated fanbase the original fostered, it was enough for Capcom to want to give it another shot but targeting a slightly different demographic.
I’m really happy for it. It was a dream seeing the sequel be announced.
Oh and off topic but I stand by my headcannon that Makili Pietru was heavily based off of old concept art for Gore Magala. It looks so unbelievably similar to an old design for Gore and the similarities in their role it can’t just be coincidence

I really love Stories. Still the best Pokémon game to me. Still disappointed Nintendo robbed us of the later update with more monsters and the second tower route with the enemies from the anime.
I see a lot of people complain about the battle system but for the most part it prevents you from mindlessly mashing A to get through battles. Also loved how it did a better job showing the bond between you and your monstie. It's still a wild creature at the end of the day so it will do its own thing, and you gotta build that bond during battle. Not just slap an item on any random monster you catch or hatch to pull out a big move(Z moves in Pokemon at the time). Also love how if you change your monstie's element, it will alter the special move's animation as well to reflect it.

@@justjordyn6729 They did pretty much screw the game on both Japanese and western releases. Sun and Moon was rushed out to capitalise on the Go hype, and in Japan, it was like a month after Stories. And seeing as most people had to choose, they went with Pokemon.
For the west, Nintendo pretty much ditched support for the game after Ultra Sun and Moon launched. I can't say much about marketing since at the time, the South African distributer for Nintendo didn't advertise anything. You'd see the trailers on TH-cam like every other game

I put too many hours into stories personally and every minute I enjoyed. I loved pokemon but the story and content left me feeling like I didn’t play a full game, then I played stories. Stories gave me a story I was actually interested in and a battle system that felt like it had more depth to it to enjoy. I’m sad we didn’t get the extra content that Japan got but it was still all very enjoyable.

Huh, I noticed some differences between the 3DS version and the Mobile release.
Firstly the graphics on Mobile are a lot better that what the 3DS could handle.
The mini games mid fight are slightly different, such as the beam one utilizing the circle pad (which totally won’t result in it shattering into pieces like what smash did to my old 3DS).
And besides that its not that different, (also you can indeed speed up battles in the 3DS version by 2 and 3 times).
I’m just glad that someone other than GamingTaco and Gaijin Hunter reviewed this game.

Like you said in the video MH wasn’t as big as it is now and being limited to a handheld also didn’t help especially when the 3DS was nearing the end of its lifecycle. I really enjoyed this game and playe dit for quite a while trying to bulk up my starter Velocidrome as much as I could.
The story felt rather simplistic too me, but for a "kid's game" it was definitely darker and the systems more involved than you'd expect. Sucks that we never got the 1.2 update that added Teostra, Kushala and Rajang as Monsties. Kushala is one of my favorites so riding him would've been rad as hell.

I decided to watch the video a few times to try to understand its message… but even after that I still don't quite like it, I don't hate it or dislike it, I just don't like it.
While you did a good job of explaining the mechanics of MH Stories, although there are some errors and omissions that other comments have already pointed out, I was expecting a little more from this video due to the quality shown in your series on the history of MH Frontier, which I really liked it.
I expected you to talk about the development of the game a little more than just saying that "Ryozo Tsujimoto stated that the concepts of the game were based on the interest of fans wanting to know more about the world setting and how monsters lived" and that this affected the game design.
Although not all your videos have to go in depth, due to how old this game is and how little accessible the information about its development is, this would’ve been a good opportunity to investigate about it and show it to more people.
Also, you didn't mention that the game has an anime, which is surprisingly good in terms of story… but the animation on the other hand isn’t really good.
Then there's the fact that you seem to have a bit of a bias in favor of Pokemon because of how you expressed some things, even if it's not the case.
Things like saying that most of the relatively popular games in the mon genre always try to imitate the Pokemon formula, or that such games are glorified knock offs or clones of Pokemon.
And while it’s clear that you did NOT put MH Stories in this category, you mentioned other games of the genre that don’t deserve to be classified as such because they are quite different from Pokemon, such as Yokai Watch.
Although Pokemon deserves recognition for having popularized the mon genre, it’s NOT the franchise that created the genre, Shin Megami Tensei was the one who created it.
Also, Digimon while it started to become popular around the same time as Pokemon, I'm not entirely sure Pokemon was the reason for that. And this franchise was created based on the V-Pets like the Tamagotchis and not based on the mon genre.
Not to mention the phrase "I know that sounds insane to someone who has ONLY EVER played every Pokemon game their entire life for 28 years, ME" makes it seem like the only franchise of the mon genre that you had played before MH Stories was Pokemon, even if it is not the case.
Finally, the negative comments towards Fire Emblem Heroes and Puzzle and Dragon, even if they are deserved (I don’t know, I know very little about both games) only reinforced this idea the first time I saw the video.
Maybe if you had made fun of Pokemon like you did with FEH, I think I wouldn't have thought you had bias in favor of Pokemon.
    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Maybe I’ve these problems because I LOVE this game, I completed the main story only after 100 hours, and I’m frustrated that MH Stories despite its great quality sold less than 1M copies, probably even less than 500K, while Pokemon SwSht despite its low quality sold over 18M copies, which is more than all the copies sold by MHW, the BEST SELLING Capcom game of ALL TIME, and Iceborne combined.
I’m also VERY WORRIED that MH Stories 2 will sell below the expectations of Capcom again, If I already thought that MH Stories wasn’t going to have a sequel due to how little it sold, if the sequel sells little again that would kill the chances for this spin-off series to have more sequels in the future.
While MH Stories 2 will come out on a console that’s still at a high point, I’ve heard that 2021 is the 25 anniversary of Pokemon and there will be a lot of things to celebrate it, which could cause the game to be ignored like the first one due to the sheer amount of content Pokemon will have next year.
I really wish the next Pokemon game will get into another big controversy like SwSht did, preferably even bigger, so that will help MH Stories 2 sell more copies to ensure more sequels.
I REALLY HATE the fact that Pokemon practically has monopolized the mon genre and that most of the competitors end up disappearing for that very reason.
P.S: The fact that this video came out very close to the release of Immortals Fenyx Rising which is being criticized negatively by Nintendo fanboys JUST because it’s BASED on Zelda BotW only adds to my frustration when MH Stories is compared with Pokemon.

    • @SuperRADLemon
      @SuperRADLemon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think a lot of your problems with my video are more your own problems with Pokemon or something man, I don't know. I Haven't played Pokemon since X and Y and only recently grabbed Sword on a whim. While I have a lot of nostalgia for the series and recognize how it culturally revolutionized the genre, that doesn't prevent me from looking at it critically. The fact that you had a problem with me poking fun at some games, but were upset I didn't poke fun at Pokemon says a lot. Try going into this video without assuming I have these weird biases some of yall keep applying to me, and assume I just wanted to show this cool game that I really enjoyed while comparing it to what came before it. The "point of the video" is that I liked Stories and it turned out to be more than I really ever expected, and I also wanted to show off many of the features for the audience. I didn't PLAN on talking about the anime. Yes, it exists. No, it wasn't relevant to what I wanted to discuss in the video. Maybe I'll make a video on the anime sometime.
Thanks for watching, but I really feel like you gotta let this weird Pokemon vendetta go man. I don't even like the series as much as you seem to think I do. The line about it being the only game I have played was a joke.

I remember when it was first announced, so many people didn't realize they wanted something like it until then, including me. My next thought after that was: "I can finally have my favorite monster fight alongside me!"
Also, hardly a kids game, quick fun fact: Cartoons were originally meant for adults, but people thought adults wouldn't like animated thinks so it shifted to being for kids.
Around when it first came out, there were a lot of people who weren't into Monster Hunter because of the monster killing that were interested in this instead. I think it was a welcome addition to the MH universe and it changed my outlook on Monsters. I now see them more as animals all fighting in their part of the food chain, us hunters included, which you should have mentioned Reverto. That story he told of the Tigrex who laid next to him hit so hard for me, he understood the concept without ever knowing about riders. I also wouldn't hold it against the hunters that almost struck Ratha, Hunters and Riders were separated, living in two different world, after that game though, I feel I am both.
I don't play it on Mobile since I have the 3DS game, but the story was heartwarming and amazing, I almost fell apart when your player character said their only spoken line near the end. That being said, there was an anime made of MHS "Monster Hunter Stories: Ride On". I didn't like that as much for one solitaire reason: I DISLIKED LUTE!!! The person you take the place of, in the anime he was whining and annoying yet somehow still saves the day when he should have been smacked to the ground (Also because of his big mouth and empty head, it makes Cheval even darker [imo]), but I watched it through to the end (after several long breaks) because it was neat seeing MH items used in a regular show, and became curious how certain items would be used (sadly no max potions or ancient potions).
Lastly, no offense but, do you think the thunder monsters gave you problems because you had Pink Rathian armor? That's weak to lightning?
Edit-Oh, almost forgot, you forgot the best part of gene channeling: Move trading and element changing. Making a Fire attribute Khezu or what I did, Teaching my Nargacuga the Seregios scale shot =D

And comparing it to Pokémon is super fair considering the style and the audience, but like many other people, it was better. It’s the best Pokémon game that isn’t Pokémon. I liked the darkness of the game paired with the bright colors and the depth that went into fighting and making your monstie stronger. Plus I thought that the coloration changing due to gene channeling was super cool. This series is hands down one of my all time favorites. I tell EVERYONE to play these on 3ds and Switch. I love the Monster Hunter mainline games but I tried to play them a fire times and they were very hard to get the hang of. So I did Stories first and it helped so much to become familiar with the MH universe and mechanics. There’s much less to learn when you know Stories and then pick up the mainline games. But on their own, in my opinion, I think Stories is better, for me. I personally prefer the Stories games. They’re so much fun and just appeal to every part of my brain. I wish these didn’t get overlooked as much as they do. If we don’t get a Stories 3 and I have to replay 1 and 2 forever I’ll be a little sad.
I know everyone might think these are like Baby’s first Monster Hunter games, which they kind of are and that’s not a bad thing, they stand very well on their own. But I find them MUCH more challenging and more engaging than Pokémon. Pokémon can be too easy. At least in a playthrough of a game, you quickly get to a point where it’s all collecting and no challenge, just grinding. For me, Stories is never really just mindless. You have to put internet some level of effort, at least compared to Pokémon.
