    Last time I built a giant omni-wheel. An omni-wheel can move in multiple directions because it has lots of smaller wheels around its circumference, so it can roll like a normal wheel, or slide sideways.
    Normally you’d use at least three omni-wheels on a vehicle so that you can move or rotate in any direction. But in this video I’m going to put my giant omni-wheel on the front of a bicycle, and with some clever electronics I’m going to control the wheel so I can ride it.
    I’m using the back end of the bike from the Makers Secret Santa Christmas video which Colin Furze left on my driveway. I’ll need to modify the bike so I checked it wasn’t Colin’s bike from his childhood or anything and he said it sounds cool.
    As I mentioned last time, the wheel is going to be mounted the wrong way around on the front of the bike so the two wheels make a T-shape. So first of all I need to make some modifications to the front forks of the bike.

    It might actually be easier to ride in self balance mode if you physically lock the handle bars. It seems like it might almost ride like a normal bike at that point.

      Concur! Normally we use the handle bars to balance and steer. Lock them out. Let the wheel do the balancing and just shift your weight to steer.

      yes, I think they need to be locked.. it seemed that all the issues were related to learned reactions on the steering input.. but since it doesn't steer locking seems to be the solution..

      I was thinking the loss of gyroscopic effect on the front wheel would have been an issue. Pretty cool how well this works. Sort of reminds me of Destin from Smarter Every Day trying to ride the reverse steering bike.

    Looks to me like self balancing mode makes for better leaning into turns. I think with practice those could be an interesting way of riding a bike that I'm sure someone would master and do some amazing movements with!

      If you check out Veritasium's video on bikes, you'll find they are already self balancing. He rolls one down a hill and it keeps itself upright. Very interesting stuff on both accounts though!

      the problem with having wheels rotated 90 degress is that you can really only ride it on flat ground; concrete or asphalt, or anything that isnt dirt, grass, etc.

      @@AuroraAce. yeah they're incorrect. Bikes become balanced due to the centrifugal force of the wheels when moving at speed in a straight line but that doesn't make them "self balancing" like the bike in this video is.

    Suggestion: soft-start for the balancing i.e. so that it eases from no balancing to full balancing over like 2 seconds.
    Suggestion 2: steering wheel lockout when balancing is on

      Could you also feed back the steering position, to offset the balance point to allow it to balance into a certain lean, matched to a certain radius of turn?

      yes it looked like Integrator windup when he switched it on. Probably he was just switching the outputs (motor commands) ON and that would result in such windups while riding the bike normally

      2 seconds is a bit much, you'd want a 300ms from lean to full power balancing "soft balancing", it starts with very little correction (20% power? maybe play with it so it feels like resistance to leaning but still letting you lean with flicking you back straight) at the start of the lean and increasingly gets stronger until the end of the 300ms. Also give it a strength gradient depending on how much you're leaning, anything below 3 degrees should receive a 0.2 correction modifier (20% strength? Again, check what feels better) and anything over it ramps up in severity up to 10 degrees (if you lean more than 15 degrees with auto balancing on you are suffering from the stupid).
      Basically by having these two different gradients you get both a reactive response give you time to manually correct for bumps without getting over-corrected by the PID and the freedom to turn with a slight lean without getting flung over to the opposite side causing that "flick" you see whenever he turned the balancer on while riding.

      Suggestion 3: use an active omnidirectional wheel, mount the main wheel like normal and have the small wheels do the balancing.
      I'm guessing that may have been the original plan but it was ruled too much of an engineering headache

    when you stop welding with the tig, leave the torch in place and wait for the post gas to stop flowing - this allows the weld to cool and the gas stops it oxidising - which means if you need to start again - it’s ‘clean’. especially important when tigging ally

    Destin from SmarterEveryDay needs to give this one a try. He did a video on a reverse steering bike that was pretty neat and he also talked about having to forget everything you know about how to ride a bike.

    If you add a sensor on the rear wheel to read the speed, you could adjust the balancing effect accordingly, turn it on/off automatically and even add a little ramp up. That could be neat.

    This is really fascinating. I was surprised he could balance so easily. I wonder if omniwheels could be applied to disability aides, such as wheelchairs and rolling zimmer frames. For small spaces, it could even be useful in prams.

      The issue is omnj wheels tend to get stuck as actually making them work perfectly is rather hard.

      So I play Star citizen, and one thing I love is the ability to strafe my ship at any direction at any time. If I’m ever wheelchair bound, I’m replacing the wheels with Omnis and a joystick for multiple direction inputs

      @@Amara87387 Hover tech is at the level where you could probably use it if you wanted to. Walker wheelchairs are another option as the Ls3 mule is over 10 years old and 3d printing makes part replacement simpler in a domestic setting compared to a military one. The only major issue is that they can be a bit loud, but older wheelchairs aren't exactly whisper-quiet either, and there have since been many innovations that address that issue.

    It would be interesting to see a bike with the steering actually affecting the PID controller and the front wheel steering being locked in place. I expect that would be more intuitive to ride since it's always in balancing mode, but you're still able to use the steering wheel.

      I was thinking about two buttons you can press on both the handles to make the wheel turn left or right while you're going straight to allow you to turn better. seems like this was over looked but I do like what he did with the balance system. if there was another omni wheel on the back of the bike to make it look even we might actually have a really nice product here haha.

    When transitioning from not balancing mode to balancing mode, you need to reset the integration term to zero in the software just before enabling the control loop. When you are riding in "bike mode", the control loop is going nuts (I assume your gyro inputs are still there, but the motor drive is cut, so error terms in the loop are huge). The I-term "winds up" during this time. Then when you kick on the motor drive, the I-term causes sudden jerk until it initializes. Depending upon how you were riding (if you were in turn, the I-term would be large), but if you were nearly straight, the I-term would be more nearly zero, so less transient.

    I love this! One thought: lock the forks, disconnect the handlebars from the forks and make a steering encoder to send directional signal to the transverse drive? might work more like a regular bike at that point.

      It wouldn't work much like a regular bike, because you actually counter steer in a bike at speeds higher than like 2mph

    I suspect converting the bike to fixed wheel would be an improvement to this project as you would have much better control of your forward/back position and even be able to cycle backwards in balancing mode.

    This is actually pretty cool because at the end the motor is basically doing what you would do into a high speed corner on a sportbike, this could actually help people understand counter steer before practicing on a track.

    So cool! Your skills at integrating components are amazing, though at this point I imagine a lot of your balancing code and electronics are a "solved problem" and you just have to configure the same sensors and electronics on different devices to implement balancing or other control schemes. Your skill at rapidly designing and realizing complex mechanical structures is just as impressive, if not more, than the electronics!

    This is so cool I never thought this was possible! I have always wanted a bike like this. Also I didn't realize that some people don't lean to turn normally, it is how you ride a bike no handed.

    Making the rear wheel function similar to the front would be pretty sweet too. You'd be able to move on two axis without having to turn.

    It seems like a cool idea until you realize this makes dealing with curbs and other bumps and changes in elevation next to impossible to deal with without stopping and lifting the bike manually over the bump

    Imagine the scene. You're biking down the road and a heckler shouts a mean insult. You stop on a dime, rotate left 135 degrees, say something along the lines of "say that to my face, punk", rotate back, and continue your merry way.

    Fascinating project, love your work! My takeaway is opposite many of the comments, rather than locking the steering, you could add an angle input sensor and feed that into the lean angle command. The reality is the steer angle is redundant with the driven front wheel, and turning the steer axis is just a slight transform by the cosine.
    I'm thinking the steer angle gives you a steering curvature, and the lean angle bias is calculated the forward speed as an input. This means the controller would do the counter steering for you, which would be really trippy to ride for someone that knows how to ride.
    You could do other things with the control as well, for example, inverting the curvature gain would still balance but the bike would move opposite the intuitive path, similar to SmarterEveryDay but your controller should let you switch back and forth without issue.
    Can't wait to see what's next!

    Cool! I think it would also be interesting to put the omni-wheel in a bike like a regular wheel. The handlebars could make those little wheels spin electronically, instead of turning the wheel.

I was going to comment about how on a bike you have to turn the opposite direction a little bit in order to turn in the direction you actually want. I think that's pretty neat and it wasn't something I knew until seeing someone else's video about it.

    I love this video, I love weird bikes and this one is the best. 👍👍👍👍
    Watching the video part of the tests, I was thinking, that you could do the same thing without the automatic stabilisation part. Leave the front wheel fixed, at 90º to the axis of the bike and when you move the handlebars the wheel turns to one side or the other, the more you turn the handlebars the more the wheel turns sideways. I think that if it is well calibrated, it would be like riding a normal bike, and you could also keep your balance while standing still.

    I have to say though that this project really did require you to have a good helmet in case you came off the bike. However, without the strap fastened the helmet is nearly useless. Your rear tyre also needs air.

    Before I watch this video, as someone who mountain bikes a LOT: I immediately thought it'd be best to try this on the rear wheel.
    I love locking up the rear wheel and fishtailing the bike around corners, this would simplify the drift if you have the muscle memory...
    No clips, no foot out, trust the rubber you invested in!

      Although for that you'd need either a front wheel drive bike, or some complex mechanism to get the rear wheel powered in both axes. I imagine it would be possible, but getting those tiny skateboard wheels powered would be very difficult

    Very interesting, you can probably have the handle bars locked in place since you should steer by learning over. Regarding safety, that helmet is of no use unless you fasten the chin strap. Also gloves to protect your hands would be very useful.

    2.0 version would be making the Omni wheel on the bicycle go up like a one wheel then once you want to use the Omni wheel put it down and use it.

    You know you want to do it to the back tire too, imagine that, also, you should be able to set up a velocity sensor to automatically turn on the balance mode when you reach a slow point in your ride

    You could swap the front brake (who uses those?) for a pull sensor that provides an "electronic clutch" whose value counts towards the total power of the drive - fully engaged the drive has zero power and is free wheeling, upon release balance mode could reassert - or vice versa. A scaled "on/off" might provide a more natural transition between the two riding modes.

      That's wrong dude. Front brake is the main brake, cause you can't stop enough quick using back brake. Sometimes its very important.

    Eventually, I wanna see a massive motorcycle that slots on top of 2 medicine balls (big heavy things for exercising). Driven sort of like that BB8 in starwars, but with 2 wheel to make a bike.
    I think that would be a really cool offroad bike.

    I love how the bike functions especially something so tall like a mountain bike
    Though if we're talking about balance in my experience of riding bikes I've found that riding a bmx with pegs on the front wheel was my absolute favourite
    It was a cheap heavy frame but was perfect for handless riding
    I'd ride around my local hilly areas and on the down hills i'd let the handle bars go place my feet on the front pegs and push my knees towards each other and lock my legs so the wheel remained straight and I'd lean to steer which was quite odd to begin with but was awesome once I got used to it

    A steering angle sensor input would be very interesting. I imagine with the right tuning you could make it ride very 'naturally'.

      @@RCHobbyist463 That's an interesting thought experiment. Would be interesting to try it both ways. Locking the direct steering out completely scares me. And then you lose some natural stability. But programmatically it might make a lot more sense.

    Should extend the forks out a little longer to increase rideability. I'm very impressed with how well it operates as is though! Definitely looks like a it takes a lot of concentration to stay stationary, which is just how you would while performing a track stall.

    Brace the handlebar to prevent user input. This allow the system to do all the balancing work, and the user can't "helpfully" defeat the balancing system

    I won't say where I am from but we have a guy in my city that this wheel would be useless. Best wheelie rider I have ever seen. Also very modest about his bike handling skills. Makes u-turns on narrow streets, let alone his figure 8s. It is cool to see him out almost everyday on our streets. Interesting video though. 👍

    If you can continue your research in this project, to the point where you can use your code to enable a powerful electric motor, to finely manipulate a rubber tyre at 90 degrees to self balance (with minimal corrections - maybe a bike with critical level centre of gravity - so you could comfortably cross your arms and hold a convo with someone not on a bike) and then you could press a button or do some command to go back to transport mode were the front tire snaps forward again into cycle mode! That would be sick! You got the brains for it bro, I’d save up my spare cash for weeks to buy into it! Xxx

    Hey! Welder here, I have some constructive suggestions. Try lowering your Amps and lessen the darkness on your helmet, this will allow finer control. Slow your pace, it's not a race. You should also try a 4 cup, and having your tungsten out a bit further, this will put you at a higher risk of dipping your tungsten, but will give you the space to see what you're doing. Hope this helps!
