Thanks for the tutorial on how to do this. I'm trying to restore this 1920's Favorite S&R made Puritan #8 waffle iron is a beauty! Puritan was a brand produced by both The Favorite Company and Griswold Companies in the mid 1900's. The brand, originally produced and owned by The Favorite Company, went out of business in the late 30's, and from there was produced by Griswold.
I am so glad to see cast iron making a come back. Except for one thing. They are getting harder to find at garage sales!! LOL! Thanks for the videos! Keep them coming!
I have my grandmother's electric waffle iron from the 30's and was looking for ideas when I stumbled on your video. I was so very pleasantly surprised. Your manner and expertise suprisingly just ministered to my inner man and my desire to live the simple, old-fashioned life. Thank you so much, sir! I am very thankful that you posted this video. It is the first time I have felt like this old girl could actually do it. :) Blessings!
as always great video restoring an old vintage waffle iron is becoming a lost art.People today just trow old keepsakes away.Man does that make me sick.Love that you took the time to restore this one.Man if it could only talk the stories it could tell of the past people who used it.Thanks again
I always get a kick out of your CI videos. You got me started rehabbing CI after watching your first series on restoration. I am teaching my 16 Y/O granddaughter how to cook on CI and she now has her own collection for her lifetime. Thanks JC!
Well > you are certainly getting me to see just where I can find a waffle iron locally. That is why I'm dragging my feet. It floats my boat to acquire items from my neighbors, as I usually also get a family history as well... The 1921 Hoosier cabinet I recently acquired belonged to the grandmother of my friend. So JC >> you have sufficiently motivated me to get cracking !All the best my friend.
I finally scored!!! A Wagner #9 with a tall base (already restored) should hit my porch in about a week. Wood handles intact too. Can't wait to get it broke in and ready to make me some waffles on it !!!
Fine JOB on the waffle maker Boss.....I have been restoring axes today at camp !! But tomorrow I will work on my $2 dollar waffle iron I got last fall at a yard sale!!! The waffle that you cooked looked fantastic !!!!
Hey Boss, good to see you again...The waffle iron came out good...But the waffle looks great...some syrup on it and that will do the trick....lol good job as always and thanks for showing us a great tip...take care my friend and be blessed
Mighty fine - great job there Boss ; that's another fine ever lasting cookware piece & a treasure - great score - good on ya J C - take care & have a large - fun filled day > kirk out ; )
lol I just reseasoned my #10 Griswold/ really a Wagner skillet. And then I sit down to watch some TH-cam and here's your video of a fantastic waffle iron.
Love the video - making me hungry! The white plate you place your waffle on towards the end isn't really vintage in comparison to the iron, but is the patter my parents had in the kitchen when I grew up. Funny how the little things bring back so many memories! Thanks for posting!
Hello from Prince Edward Island This doesn't fall under Cast Iron but I recently dug out my Bamboo Steamer and placed it in a shallow cast iron pan with water and poached chicken breasts. My point is using the wood stove as a utilitarian device in as many ways as possible. The nice thing about a steamer is that it is 'stacked', so you could steam veg on top and chicken on the bottom. Thanks Boss for the videos, so much to learn from you
Hey Boss, after your previous video on the waffle iron I found an old warnick& leibrsndt at a flea market, got it for 10 bucks. Followed your advice on restoring it. Turned our great!! Kids and I loved eating waffles from a 150 year old iron. Thank you, love all the videos!
Hi Boss, Nice job on that old waffle maker, she is a beauty now! Thank you for always sharing your good advice, I trust yours very much. I've cleaned up a few of my cast iron skillet like you and they have came out perfect, Be safe and stay warm! Karey From: Missouri
Cast iron is awesome! Best thing about it though is when I take it out and fry chicken in the same pan my grandmother used to fry it in 50 years ago! Great info JC!
Ok, I did the complete unthinkable JC , I used a semi grinding pad on a drill & removed every thing on this pan & I KNOW YOUR CUSSING NOW ! LOL but it worked & came out like new ! ! ! YES REALLY : ) I ground it all out then used 150 grit then emory paper washed & re-seasoned it like 10 times then in the oven for 2 hours at 500 degrees with me coating it every 30 mins & holy crap it's awesome ! I cooked on it this morning bacon & eggs NOTHING AT ALL STUCK TO THE PAN ! then I cleaned it up gave it a light coating of extra virgin olive oil & wal la ! It's a beautiful thing buddy. : ) Don't shake that finger at me young man ! ! ! LOL It was really the only way to get all that crap off it JC. I actually saved it from pitting any further too ! Give Frankie a pet & god bless buddy
I've done the same on some old Wagners I bought that were crusty. Even used a rotary sander lol. The pans had wobble to them so I figured they'd make good pans for my rocket stove. I'd never do that stuff to my good pans but never need to :-)
Well Boss thank you for introducing the waffle irons awhile back, after watching I had to get a set and we been enjoying waffles every since. The kids just love them, so do me hahaha The first batch wasn't so good the irons were not heated quiet long enough but after that they been perfect every since.... I have a couple pots that need to be redone, i'll give this method a try, thanks again Boss, all the best......
Believe I'm gonna try and re oil my iron Dutch oven. I'm one of those who thought more oil would be better. In return, my lid is so sticky that it collects all the ashes from the fire like a glue fly trap! Thanks for sharing the video and keep warm!!
Jim, you are really on a roll with your videos now!! I look forward to seeing the newly posted ones. Reminds me I need to order some more of the Frontier Steak spice. I'm using it on just about any meats. Great as a base for Pot Roast and Pork Butt as well. Thanks for all your efforts!!
You made that look too easy...........I will look for one of those old irons because the wife loves waffles but I am not sure that I can deliver the same results...............very nicely done..!!
Well JC, as I always say, great enjoyable video. Wish I could find a cast iron waffle maker around here, or any cast iron cookware for that matter. It sure is funny that the ad before your video was an instructional on how to make Liege Waffles. What a coinkydink :) Thanks for taking the time to whip up the video, and a batch of waffles as well ;)
Good job I have a large collecton of cast iron cook wear waiting for me to get to them. I haven't been able to find a waffle iron yet. It looks like all of your snow is gone, lucky guy.
This has helped me so much. My husband bought me a vintage waffle iron for Christmas. It's a McCleary NO 9, made in 1914. If I could upload a photo, I would. I will be following your process exactly. It has a little bit of rust, but it's in really good shape. I've been waiting for this. We love your videos, an I especially love this one. Cooking on our Kitchen Queen, we use all cast iron. Would love some more videos with your Kitchen Queen: cooking, proper maintenance, etc and how to get the oven up to bread-baking temp. I get ours up to about 300 degrees and the house temp gets up to about 80. I gave up on it the other night; I'm sure it's me. A little advice...
I'll see what I can do but yes, the hotter the fire, the hotter the house gets. Cooking with wood calls for adjustments in lifestyle. Opening windows will help with that.
thebossoftheswamp That would be great. I look forward to it. I think perhaps I wasn't patient enough. I had the oven engaged for over an hour, the flue closed, the door vent closed, but I kept the window wash open. That could have been part of it. We have the glass doors, which comes with a window wash lever to keep smoke away from the glass. I had the oven up to 300, not enough to cook a pizza. It's a learning curve, I know and I'm determined. I can tell you, I've never been one to cling to material things, but from the day we had it installed, I was attached. This cook stove makes me happy. I absolutely love cooking with wood. I just want to make sure I'm getting it right.
Priceless information my friend! Love using cast iron but I do not have a cast iron waffle iron will have to get one! I have made your apple and pumpkin pancakes may use them to make waffles next time! :) God bless you and yours..
Since you like to restore cast iron and that is a good way to spend time in winter months, have you given any thought to selling some cast iron on your web site. I would buy one of those old waffle makers since I can't find any good ones.
Very nice results on the waffle iron, I have been looking for one for a long time, but it doesn't seem that to many get rid of their cast iron around here. About 12 years ago though I was at a yard sale, they had one whole table of just cast iron and I bought 2 fry pans they over two burners. I figured I could cook a whole meal in one pan with that size. I think I am going to have to season them a little more after watching and listening to your video! Thanks so much for the lesson! Blessings!
I love me some good old iron reconstituting! Fun to watch your success. And it really isn't that hard so I hope you're inspiring others too. I'm looking forward to the rest of your projects, Boss. Enjoy the Cabin Life. :-)

Well there you go again making me hungry. LOL... Good video!!
J.C., Thanks to you, I was able to restore a rust encrusted #5 pan that belonged to my husband's grandmother. Love what you do!
That's awesome. Thanks for your success report :-)
Another great time learning while just hanging out watching.
:-))

Man I haven't seen a bamboo steamer in years. Now that jogged a memory :-)
It turned out great, Boss!

All waffles are Frankie approved :c)#
Believe I'm gonna try and re oil my iron Dutch oven. I'm one of those who thought more oil would be better. In return, my lid is so sticky that it collects all the ashes from the fire like a glue fly trap! Thanks for sharing the video and keep warm!!
Lots of folks over oil their iron. Been there done that :-/

It sure is funny that the ad before your video was an instructional on how to make Liege Waffles. What a coinkydink :) Thanks for taking the time to whip up the video, and a batch of waffles as well ;)
The ads are usually generated by key words in the title. I'll make sure not to use "coinkydink" in my titles LOL :-D
Now, that's funny....good one :)
Thanks Boss! Just got a couple old skillets today that need some love.
Love em up :-)
thebossoftheswamp Your method worked great! The olive oil seasoned it perfectly.

Since you like to restore cast iron and that is a good way to spend time in winter months, have you given any thought to selling some cast iron on your web site. I would buy one of those old waffle makers since I can't find any good ones.
This was great. Very timely. I have some cast iron pots which need to be restored. You always do awesome videos.
Thank you

Frankie will be happy to hear that :-)
Thank you
Very nice results on the waffle iron, I have been looking for one for a long time, but it doesn't seem that to many get rid of their cast iron around here. Blessings!
I wish I could find a table of cast iron like that :-)
tks for the help I've been getting a few cast iron cookware. . and tryin to bring life back to them.. tks again.
I love me some good old iron reconstituting! Fun to watch your success. And it really isn't that hard so I hope you're inspiring others too. I'm looking forward to the rest of your projects, Boss. Enjoy the Cabin Life. :-)
Restoring these are very enjoyable to me :-)
More and more, I use my cast iron for cooking my food on. I too have a number of pieces which I salvaged from a junk pile.
There's just something about using an old relic you salvaged. Quite a novelty to it :-)
