Fun fact, the chord that plays at 4:26, at the moment Serizawa sacrifices himself, is the same chord that plays when Destroyah appears in its final form. A demon born from Serizawa’s weapon, the epitome of his fears made manifest.

Daisuke Serizawa is a key character. He is a scientist who invents a powerful and devastating weapon called the "Oxygen Destroyer" as a potential means to defeat Godzilla, a massive and destructive monster that emerges from the sea and wreaks havoc on Tokyo.
Serizawa is initially reluctant to use his invention, fearing its potential for misuse as a weapon of mass destruction. However, as the threat posed by Godzilla becomes more severe, he ultimately decides to use the Oxygen Destroyer to stop the monster and save humanity.
In the climactic scene of the movie, Serizawa sacrifices his own life to deploy the Oxygen Destroyer. He dives underwater with the device and activates it, causing a chemical reaction that disintegrates both Godzilla and himself. This act of self-sacrifice results in the demise of Godzilla and is a pivotal moment in the film, symbolizing the theme of human responsibility and the consequences of nuclear weapons.
Serizawa's sacrifice is a significant and emotional element of the original "Gojira" film, and it underscores the film's messages about the dangers of nuclear weapons and the impact of human actions on the environment.

Fun fact, this track was originally from the movie "Hiroshima" the year before, Ikufubi repurposed it for Gojira due to the similar theme of the movie.

Considering how Gojira *54 over plays the nukes whilst underplaying the Napalm Bombings of Tokyo as well as Japans own atrocities by portraying Japan as a nation of innocents in spite of countless atrocites the Japanese committed including the 40 year genocide in Korea I have lost respect with knowledge and time for this movie as it portrayed a very inaccurate and revionist statement just after the deadliest war in Human History a war the Japanese started in 1937 no less. Its also coincidentally why I respect and adore Godzilla vs Destroyah as its shows what happens when we take Gojira *54's message to heart and the disastrous consequences of that message.

News reporter: The only batch of Oxygen Destroyer in the world: How much power does it possess? Its inventor, Dr. Serizawa, refuses to say. All we can do now is pray for its success.
(Ogata and Serizawa get into diving suits)
(Kyohei opens the case containing the Oxygen Destroyer, and hands it to Serizawa)
Serizawa: Professor... I never thought I'd reveal my discovery like this.
Emiko: I'll be praying for you.
Kyohei: You two be very careful. Ogata, I'm counting on you.
News reporter: The attack begins. Dr. Serizawa is being lowered into the water.
(Ogata and Serizawa dive to the bottom of Tokyo Bay)
(Ogata and Serizawa reached to the bottom of Tokyo Bay)
Sailor #1: They've reached the bottom!
(Godzilla wakes up and notices Ogata and Serizawa)
(Ogata and Serizawa distance from Godzilla to get a clean shot for the Oxygen Destroyer)
    Sailor #1: Stop!
    Sailor #2: Stop unspooling!
    (Everyone on deck watch anxiously)
(Serizawa tugs Ogata's line, and goes back up)
    Ogata: Serizawa! Serizawa! Serizawa!
    (Ogata bobs to the surface)
(Godzilla walks straight into Serizawa's position)
    (Serizawa activates the Oxygen Destroyer)
    (The Oxygen Destroyer suffocates Godzilla)
Ogata: Serizawa! Serizawa! What's going on? Serizawa!
(The Oxygen Destroyer causes a huge bubble to the surface)
(Godzilla struggles against the Oxygen Destroyer as it suffocates to death)
Serizawa: Ogata, it's working! I hope you and Emiko will be happy. Good-bye! Farewell!
    (Serizawa pulls out a knife)
Ogata: Serizawa! Bring him up! Serizawa!
(Serizawa cuts his rope to pull him up and his tube of oxygen)
(Crew pulls Serizawa's line quickly as possible, only to find them cut)
(Kyohei, in shock, removes his hat)
    Kyohei: Serizawa...
(Godzilla bobs to the surface, and lets out a death roar before sinking back to the bottom)
(The Oxygen Destroyer disintegrates Godzilla's body, then it's skeleton)
    (The bubbling died down)
News reporter: What emotion! What joy! Victory at last! I saw Godzilla's lifeless corpse sink into the sea with my own eyes! The victory belongs to young Dr. Serizawa, scientist of the century!

4:26 sounds like the intro to Godzilla vs destoroyah, which I think is completely intentional. Just hearing it automatically connects the bridge of the oxygen destrpyer straight to the creation of destoroyah.

Still the greatest Godzilla movie ever, and ironically, the first one of the franchise.
I think Shin Gojira and Godzilla 1985 (the American version is better than the Japanese one lmo) really captured the essence of what Gojira represented in 1954, but are still pretty much small when compared to this masterpiece
But like most say, "Nothing beats the original"

    • @SFforlife
      @SFforlife 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Agreed. In a way, I think if there never was a series of films, it would’ve been okay. The original film was strong enough to simply be, and end on its own, IMO. I’m glad there was more, don’t get me wrong, but the original film is nearly perfect, and said and showed what it needed to. There almost didn’t need to have to be any more movies after.

Yeah, although I like the new versions, they are more of a re-telling of the post-1955 Showā movies. It's not bad, I like Showā era (sadly, I can't remember all of those movies). But I think Shin really captured that escense, and I'm kinda glad there's no Shin 2, the movie alone is good

The only problem on shin is that it focuses too much on how to stop godzilla and not on what godzilla is causing.
