This is Pam Kershaw, Doug’s wife of 48 years. Our son came across your video today and showed it to Doug. It totally made his day, which is nice because it’s his birthday. Glad he made you smile. He really is one of a kind.
glad to hear he's still kicking and hopefully still sawin away at his fiddle for himself and loved ones? This is a beautiful interaction to see. The Internet is awesome sometimes.
I just saw your husband for the first time and don't know how I missed seeing him before. I'm excited that I get to binge watch now and get to know him.
Grew up Listening to Doug and other Cajun Performers. Family members of mine have played his music throughout the years! Cajun Joe is one of my all-time favorite Songs!
If I remember correctly ( and seeing him live and in concert) he had a fiddle in the shape of the state of Louisiana and it was blue. His playing was awesome to hear and watch!
FWIW, if you want to see more, there was a PBS special titled "Fiddlers Three". On it were Itzhak Perlman, Jean Luc Ponty, and Doug Kershaw. Classical, Jazz, and Cajun.
I would have loved to know what Itzhak Perlman's and Jean Luc Ponty's opinions of him, particularly after he destroyed two bows playing "The Orange Blossom Special!" th-cam.com/video/Jy-bDmK4puA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1b7E4zj3uwbguadz
Just love Doug Kershaw. Thanks for reacting to him. The second clip was definitely more how I remember his fantastic performances. Once upon a time he was all over the tv on different shows.
Whoot! Doug Kershaw's ancestor Agnes Thibodeau was the sister of my 6x granmother, Elisabeth Thibodeau, they were both deported from Acadie in 1755. Elizabeth Brault made it back to Canada but Agnes Broussard stayed in Louisiana, Agnes's husband Joseph Beausoliel Broussard is the father of the Cajuns! Whoot!
I discovered Doug Kershaw a few months ago and watched every live video I could find online. He’s an Aquarius which makes sense, he’s a genius of sorts. Doug’s style and great vibes and energy is intoxicating and his uniqueness inspires me to be myself and to make my dreams come true..thank you Doug and family ❤much love. I love Cajun music SO MUCH 🎉
To me Doug Kershaw is THE BEST fiddle player ever!!!(The Ragin Cajun) My Lord he was excellent! My Dad who was part Cajun and I listened to him all the time and I still do! Cajun music is also THE BEST music I have ever heard! It gets into your soul and makes ya wanna move!!!
This is Cajun music at its finest! Doug is the best! Welcome to Cajun Music. Cajun Music is happy, celebration music…Get Up and Dance music. I’m a Proud Cajun and our heritage and culture is beautiful!
Doug was playing music in a bar before he was old enough to go to school. Everybody should enjoy what they do as much as he does I've been blessed to called Doug my friend since the early 1990's. He's one of a very few left that actually feels passion in what they do. Jimmy C Newman and Jo-El Sonnier ( both gone now) along with Doug are what Cajun music is. Since your already on TH-cam type in his name along with the other two and you'll see and hear a culture like no other. Doug has shown a lot of people what life can really be like, Cajuns live life to the fullest and enjoy all around them. Doug deserves to be appreciated and honored for his lifetime of giving and teaching that life should be enjoyed always and to the fullest.
I used to watch the Johnny Cash show and all the country shows. Doug Kershaw was all over them. The song I most remember from all those years ago is Louisiana Man. Listen to that one.
I have loved Doug for 50 years or more, his energy, his love for what he's doing, he feeds off the audience reactions, feels their energy he is inspiring! Wow! Doug! My love and thanks to you and family!
Mr. Duran, congrats on discovering the greatest fiddle player to ever live playing greatest fiddling song ever recorded. I have been a connoisseur of this song for over 4o years. The second video is as good as it gets !! Thank you for recognizing the Eddie Van Halen level brilliance in this man!!
WOW! I've never heard of anyone review him! I have an old album of him. I never thought of him as "country", rather, Cajun music. His nickname was "The Ragin Cajin"😊
I am SOOO HAPPY that you included the 2nd performance of the same song! The Johnny Cash version was like watching Doug play in a VERY controlled, almost sterile environment. Placing one super talented, high energy musician all alone on a huge stage behind a single microphone stand and asking him to sing and play the hell out of his fiddle for LESS than a minute and a half is like asking Pete Townsend to stand still for 90 seconds while playing the hell outta his guitar in front of a Sunday mass of church goers with their hands folded in their laps. That Johnny Cash performance doesn't exactly showcase Doug's talent as much as the second, noticeably less restrained live performance with a back-up band, people dancing and truly enjoying the music for 2 minutes and 43 seconds! Doug needs room to move when he's holding that fiddle!
@@JohnNaturkach I enjoyed watching Seb Duran's facial expressions as he watched the 2nd video. He was as blown away as I was the first time (and STILL AM every time) I watched this performance! I'm guessing that Amethyst Jones, who requested the Johnny Cash video, must not have ever seen the 2nd one!
@@muchkneaded When I saw how Duran was responding I had to show my son.because that’s how he reacted when I showed him Kershaw in the same second clip from somewhere else or other a few weeks ago. Again, if I haven’t said it before, I could watch Doug Kershaw all day long every day. Plus I should mention that I still have his LP’s I purchased in 1970 or so. AAAnd they play like the first day I bought them.
In October 1962 while hitchhiking through Louisiana I stopped into a roadhouse to get out of the incessant rain. I witnessed this type of music and similar songs sung in Creole and broken English. It was a "watershed" moment for multiple reasons. As in this video the dance floor was packed with energetic fast dancing. I felt like I had dropped into a different country but I enjoyed both the music and experience and still do. Great video!!!
He put out an album titled Spanish Moss that has a range of music from ballads to love songs to foot-stomping Cajun music. I lost my copy of it and others in one of my many moves while in the military.
I’d forgotten how much I loved listening to him as a teenager, yes a teenager, I am now almost 71…yrs, I listened to the normal” music girls listened to back then. But just something about Mr. Kershaw & his fiddle 😀😀❤️
Thank you, thank you, THANK you!!!! I've been begging reactors to do Doug Kershaw for 2 years now, and you, Sebs, are the first! Next, I would recommend Louisiana Man -- A sweet autobiographical stor yr-song, and then "Had it not been for My Sally Jo" a little livelier one. I have a couple of Doug's old tapes in the van . . . but they make me drive too fast!
Doug Kershaw is the greatest. I sometimes spend hours digging up all the videos on the internet of him. His spirit is infectious and he brings pure joy and light into this world. Love that man!!!
I'm so glad you played the 2nd video!! I swear I was just wishin' someone would react to Doug Kershaw just a few days ago! My mother was enraptured by him anytime he came on the TV! She was crazy about him because he was so animated and wild when he played the fiddle like no one else. To me, he was the epitome of what a "Cajun" was and a wonderful representation of the Cajun culture! But you still haven't seen him riled up and ready to go! These performances are relatively tame ones for Doug Kershaw! He really was the "Ragin' Cajun" from Louisiana!
Thanks for covering this! Doug Kershaw is top of the line in fiddle players! I love fiddle and violin music! It goes to the very soul! Get into Cajun and Bluegrass! You'll never be the same!
I was stationed in Louisiana more than 40 years ago while in the Air Force. There was a morning talk show that came on every morning at 5:00 am, where they spoke French only and played Cajun music like this. It was like living in a foreign country.
That sounds like the show "Passe Patout" I used to watch it every morning before going to bed after working the night shift. My mother in law used to tell my wife that he was one of their cousins. He was from Hackberry, LA and we were from Lake Charles and Westlake, LA. Good times listening to his music.
I have always loved Doug Kershaw. Something about him always reminded me of Rod Stewart. Maybe it's the nose. He used to be on the Porter Wagoner show a lot.
I taught myself fiddle by ear listening to Doug Kershaw's "Alive and Picking" live album. I held the fiddle like Doug does. I could fit "Battle of New Orleans" into any song on his album. I wonder if I can still do it... Thank you for the respect and appreciation you show for Mr. Kershaw. He inspired me so much.
I was lucky to see Doug in person at a music festival in New Orleans...I believe it was 2018...the show was incredible and I got to meet him in person backstage and get an autograph. What an incredible experience! Just awesome!
It is great watching you listening to him for the first time and enjoying him so much! I've been a fan for decades and even ran into him in a store in Greeley CO over 20 years ago. It was a joy! His music makes me so happy!
The 2nd video is great because you see the folks Cajun dancing at the Fais do do (a Cajun Dance party)… brings back memories of my childhood. Incidentally, Cajun Countru is really further West in south Louisiana than New Orleans
I can remember listening to him from as early as I can remember. My parents were big fans and I naturally was as well. I got to see Doug live at the Devil’s Backbone Tavern a couple of years ago and it was awesome! Even though he was in his 80’s, he still had the energy and voice that made it just incredible! I’m 63 now and still listen to his music on a regular basis. He’s truly one of the best!
got to see him live at the Clark county fair in Washington about 40 years ago. the man went through a lot of bows from sawin on that fiddle. Fantastic performer.
Man I haven't listened to Doug Kershaw in years. The man could play a fiddle like a house on fire but the man was like an erratic energizer bunny on stage. 😂
I saw Doug Kershaw a couple of times in Texas, but I saw Frenchy Burke a whole bunch of times all over the Houston area. He was the most fun performer I ever saw in possible.
I live in Western Canada and in 1972, I got a copy of his self titled album and realized how great an entertainer he was and is. Nobody plays the fiddle with the energy Doug does. I still listen to the great songs from that album, Colinda, Natural Man and Trying to Live. His song writing is up there with the best.
Glad to see some of you younger folks can get off on the great music we've been loving for decades. I was raised in L.A. but I kne(o)w great music when I hear(d) it. FWIW: I'm not hearing much of it lately.
I saw Doug many time at the fair in the Antelope Valley, we use to go with My son and my husband, we really enjoy his show, he is awesome artist. I like the best the Cajun Stripper…we like all but that one is awesome
Back in the mid 80's while stationed at Vegas i ran into a guy name Doug Bowser( i may have misspelled the last name) who played in a lot of the small bars. Once saw him put his bow under the fiddle with the strings over the top and play " The Orange Blossom Special ". Check out the song by Roy Clark. Another one that can play anything with strings.
I roadied for doug about a year and a half in 80 I believe . He was a monster talent . Long before i met him . I think him and his brother dusty sold MILLIONS OF alblums before then . We played with pure prairy league at the tagus ranch in ca . He played cajun bluegrass to vince gill vocals and was off the chain good . I will never forget . We plaued the palamino alot back then . He had Jay dewitt playing bass for him when i started . Of Rick nelson fame . The whole band rocked . Lots of fun . I rehaired his bows at night in hotel rooms to keep up w him . What a hoot . I thank the long lost Ed Warner for that gig .
I Went to see Doug Kershaw, early 90's not knowing what to expect. Lord Almighty...I sat there in stunned disbelief...he took the stage with his 300 year old Stradivarius violin. And proceeded to dance, sing & play his fiddle while showering the front rows with violin resin powder, sweat(perspiration)& horse hairs from the bow. His bow would only last for 1 or 2 songs before 1/2 the horse hairs were flying around in the air & landing on him, the stage & a few on me. He has been playing violin & dancing before Lindsey Sterling was born. He appeared in the rock western movie Zachariah with Don Johnson & Joe Walsh. Kershaw is a good violinist, however he is the best "entertainer" I have ever seen. When he appeared on TV the directors would instruct him to stand still & not dance around- the cameramen couldn't follow him (what a shame). I don't know why he didn't become mega super star. There is nobody like him.
His first big hit was Louisiana Man, in 1961, sung by Doug and his brother, Rusty (Rusty and Doug). It was an autobiographical account of his childhood and family life on a houseboat, near Lake Arthur, Louisiana.
Doug has a lot of energy.I remember watching him play,he has a large Cajun playbook.Jo-El Sonnier is another talented Cajun singer who rocks the accordian!
Doug had an important part in the movie Zachariah. The first electric western. Great music and awesome plot. Also an early costarring part for Don Johnson (most famous for Miami Vice). I think you would appreciate it 😊
There used to be a Country venue in the San Fernando Valley in California called The Palomino Club. I saw a lot of musicians in that club growing up. The two that stand out in my mind the most was Hoyt Axton (he was so funny) and Doug Kershaw (the Ragin' Cajun). Doug was a whole vibe. So much energy, played the crap out of that fiddle with strings breaking and the bow frayed and everybody out of their seat dancing their butts off. He is AMAZING!!! The true difference between a fiddle and a violin--- The bridge of a fiddle is adjusted just a little and the strings on the bow is loosened a little and that gives that different drawn out sound.
I love watching your reactions, Sebs, you never fail to entertain. I'm still watching for you and Ali to get your cowboy boots and hats. I bet you'll get yours quicker if you buy her some first. And don't you worry about your pronunciation, I've never even detected any accent except American English.
Man I had forgotten about this guy. I’m 63 now and I saw him live in West Texas when I was just a kid. He was a madman on stage that night. I have seen many fiddle players since then including Charlie and none of them compare.
The Ragin’ Cajun’!! Awesome talent! Loved your reaction to the song! Check out his others! There are so many! Especially Louisiana Man. That’s a great one as well!! Also, New Orleans isn’t Cajun Country. Cajun country is SW LA in Acadian Parishes. ❤
To this day… I’ve NEVER seen or heard another player attack double stops relentlessly, both beautiful and abstract all up and down the neck like Doug does.. None can compare
I've been going through your catalog and just came across Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Cabelle performing how can I go on. I don't know if you read comments that get added later on after you've done the reaction. I don't know if any of the questions you asked were answered in the comments made when you first did the reaction but this is what I've been able to piece together. There are several interviews with Montserrat on TH-cam. Thank you for indulging me and I hope I gave you a little bit more information This is a link to Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe. She is a well-known Italian opera singer. Freddie was a long time fan of Opera. In particular he felt Montserrat had the best singing voice of any opera star. She was from Barcelona. The song had to be completed by 1988 to be considered for the opening ceremonies of the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics. Freddie told her 2 two years prior to his death that he would not be there to sing it with her because he had AIDS. From what I have pieced together she was the first person that he told even though his bandmates were seeing symptoms in him. The gentleman conducting the orchestra is Mike Moran, who co-wrote the song with Freddie, and not Brian May ( you my be reacting to a different performance of Barcelona) have a different clip than the one most people react to. Not that that matters they're both awesome in and of themselves. But in the other one the conductor does look like Brian May because of the hairstyle and it's at night). So it could be the same gentleman conducting the orchestra but during the day you can tell it's not Brian May.. People get confused because they have similar hair styles. After Freddie had passed other singers contacted her to see if they would collaborate with her. She said that that was something special between her and Freddie and she was not ever going to repeat it . There are several videos on TH-cam of interviews with her talking about Freddie and their collaboration. There's also a video of how they originally hooked up I just don't remember the name of it. The song is actually about him meeting her for the first time. This is the link to Barcelona th-cam.com/video/Y1fiOJDXA-E/w-d-xo.html This is the link to their performance of Golden Boy. th-cam.com/video/OPizyP4x30I/w-d-xo.html This is the link to their performance of how can I go on. th-cam.com/video/ksNoe8W2jTc/w-d-xo.html
Another one of his songs is Louisiana Man he also featured in a music video with Fats Domino called Don’t mess with my toot toot. Great reaction by the way.
He did a duet with my cousin which amazed me. My cousin is a great fiddler, but Kershaw is on a whole different level. You might try his Louisiana Man or Jambalaya (On the Bayou) or You Don't Want My Love. He's so amazing.

The only concert I have ever been to was at the fair in Billings MT a long time ago. Was Loretta Lynn and Doug Kershaw.
THANKS FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO AND ESPECIALLY FOR APPRECIATING DOUG'S MUSIC AND AMAZING TALENT.
I was at this show when he was introduced by Mayor Dud Lastrapes! My two favorite bands were Doug and Zachary Richard and the Zack Attack Zydeco Band!
He appeared in the rock western movie Zachariah
with Don Johnson & Joe Walsh. Kershaw is a good violinist, however he is the best "entertainer" I have ever seen. When he appeared on TV the directors would instruct him to stand still & not dance around- the cameramen couldn't follow him (what a shame).
I don't know why he didn't become mega super star.
There is nobody like him.
The more you like music, the more music you like.
OMG I was in my late teens when this song came out. He was a blast. "Louisiana Man" is another good one. Love Cajun music.
Can you imagine sittin out back around the fire and somebody say hey doug, play us a song or tre aye ol boy.
This has been my ring tone for ages now. Love this song!
I had the pleasure to see Doug at Milwaukee Summerfest. He was amazing!
Here in Louisiana, he is a rock star!
I have seen many fiddle players since then including Charlie and none of them compare.
we grew up watching the raging cajon, on the rare occasions you got to see him on TV his bow would be in shreds and he never missed a beat
We mature and evolve as we go through life. You're growing.
To this day…
I’ve NEVER seen or heard another player attack double stops relentlessly, both beautiful and abstract all up and down the neck like Doug does..
Thank you for indulging me and I hope I gave you a little bit more information
This is a link to Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe. This is the link to Barcelona

I like when younger people find some true musicians and singers.
Seen him on TV. He played the fiddle so hard the strings would be shredded and hanging off
Another one of his songs is Louisiana Man he also featured in a music video with Fats Domino called Don’t mess with my toot toot. Great reaction by the way.
He puts me in mind of Robin Williams, this is what he would be like if he was a musician. 🌹❤️
Nice reaction Sebs
The Ragin’ Cajun! gotta love Doug Kershaw
He did a duet with my cousin which amazed me. My cousin is a great fiddler, but Kershaw is on a whole different level. You might try his Louisiana Man or Jambalaya (On the Bayou) or You Don't Want My Love. He's so amazing.
Check him out playing "Orange Blossom Special" sometime. He destroys a bow with his playing.
