This is where you can appreciate the skill of a great drummer. Not always a need to thwack away at the drums, but those little soft intricate touches, little fills etc. Amazing.
Wow!! Gadd the man who invented a lot of these grooves. I was a 70-80's Miami drummer for hire and we all wanted to be this man . Great times it was truly magical and Steve made it challenging, fun and sexy to play the drums. Awesome song !!!
This is amazing. So many places he had to be exactly on the sixteenth in sync with Wihk, not inherent in the music but specific to this arrangement. And leading into it, always ahead of it. He’s insane good.
This is just one reason why buddy rich on Johnny Carson was asked whose your favorite drummer? And Buddy said swiftly there's this 18 year old kid named Steve Gadd and you're going to be hearing a lot about him he's my favorite drummer! End quote...Need I say anything more?? O think not. .
The background is that the Swedish Keyboardist Anders Wihk of Alta, Sweden, has recorded a tribute to the band ABBA, featuring instrumental jazz takes on their music. Musicians on the recording include Robben Ford, Steve Gadd, David Sanborn, and Svante Henryson. Visit www.wihk.com. The record has the title Same fruit different tree. Steve Gadd was a perfect choice on drums.
His playing between 2.05 and 2.40 has more jazz feel to it than most stuff I've heard from Gadd during the last 40 years. Plus nice groove starting at 3.50 :)
Man, this is fantastic. He makes every note counts, full of musicality. I bet he could hit trash cans with two logs and still make it sound tasteful. Lol
What is the story behind this? Why is Gadd playing along to dancing queen? Oh! It's his band! Yeah, I always liked that song too. Did he play drums on the original ?
He's a monster reader. I was in school with him and the stuff he could pull off was incredible. But to be honest....all the studio cats were great readers. But staying musical and still having "that feel" while reading was something else again.
Yes this is Steve playing ABBA, audio’s fine, just the camera’s missing all that snare, hi-hat and bass drum action with the sheet music stand blocking it. Just spied the random, “Up next” video is a view side -on at the “Spain. The Corea/Gadd Band” from Ed 007; that looks a whole lot better prospect. As for the tune, it’s a bouncy dance theme, with a matching backbeat, that’s part of it’s simplicity and original appeal. I don’t envisage an interpretation, particularly a jazz one, to be in the same vein, so for me, it loses more than it gains. That’s down to the keyboard player’s choice of material and how he wants to swing it, not SG; who follows the musical direction par excellence.
Dancing Queen is one of the best examples of disco. I actually like this song a lot, but it just doesn’t work at this tempo and style. Not to take anything away from Steve, it just sounds like muzak played this way. Just my opinion.
SCAREY / CRINGE THE ONE ASPECT OF STEVE GADDS DRUMMING I DONT LIKE IS HIS OFF BEAT OPEN HIHAT PLAYING ON THE "ANDS" OVER AND OVER AND OVER HE DOES SOME OF IT ON THOSE WONDERFUL CHICK COREA ALBUMS AND ITS CRINGE X 10 WHEN HE DOES IT ONE OF THE GREATEST DRUMMERS OF ALL TIME WHO OCCASIONALLY PLAYS THAT CRINGE OFF BEAT DISCO HIHAT BS YIKES... DANCING QUEEN 🤮

The Master at work....what a musician!
This is likely the best drumming I ever heard in my life. Love Steve's drumming.
Never seen the enchanting "Dancing Queen" like this. Groove master as expected.
This is amazing. So many places he had to be exactly on the sixteenth in sync with Wihk, not inherent in the music but specific to this arrangement. And leading into it, always ahead of it. He’s insane good.
Been following Steve Gadd since I discover him with Bob James (late 70s). The guy is a MASTER!
Steve Gadd doing dancing queen now I've seen it all
This is just one reason why buddy rich on Johnny Carson was asked whose your favorite drummer? And Buddy said swiftly there's this 18 year old kid named Steve Gadd and you're going to be hearing a lot about him he's my favorite drummer! End quote...Need I say anything more?? O think not.

Thanks so much for all your Love!!That's a very true story too. Peace out!! Everything Steve plays is perfection!!
Thanks for sharing this story, didn't know that up to know. Of course Buddy, a master himself, was right. 😉🥰
To be praised by Buddy Rich is like a knighthood for every drummer. Much more valuable than any Grammy Award.
What a beauty DANCING QUEEN!!
Steve`s drumminng is so good!!

I just love how Steve adds his own little flares to the song... Such an incredible drummer.... One if the best...
Steve, the always "in-the-pocket" master.

Yes, I forgot about that concert, with Miroslav Vitous. I like it too.
Nice keys on this - this guy has been drinking some strong Tee!
absolutely lol and does it well very stuffy
He's a master too, M. Anders Wihk
Richard!
Qué sabroso se escucha.
Maestro de maestros. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Gadd is so damm good!
I'm guessing he is sight ready this chart. Awesome.
it looks like Gadd plays a first view reading, absolutely amazing! supermaster!
He does not. They also recorded this as a CD.
Listen to a the little details he´s playing that fit perfectly to the piano - so, he´s not reading it on first view.
He makes dancing queen sounds more bad ass for some reason.
love this !!
My guilty pleasure song just got a hundred times better.
3:17 Lovely reharm!
So laid back and bouncy.
My god, he's beeing reading at the same time. This man's a monster
Man, this is fantastic. He makes every note counts, full of musicality. I bet he could hit trash cans with two logs and still make it sound tasteful. Lol
Rhythm king.
This sounds more of West Coast. For example, that break on every verse. Reminds me of what Steve Gadd did on some of West Coast genre album
Drumming King
What fun!!
He seems to be more ore less directly reading the sheets here. But still, you feel the "Gadd" touch
@James Lyback Yeah:-D I've heard this done with another drummer. He played all the same drum parts. It's a fixed arr. But he sure nails it.
@James Lyback Legendary! :-)
el groove de Gadd es maravilloso.
Si amigo!
Magical.
Dancing Queen played by Drummer King! 😆👏
Good Gadd!
Top of the range.
That bass foot...damn!!!
Rhythm king.
Steve Gadd the Meister at work
WOW JUST WOW 💖👍
Wau...this guy is really good on drums...he could play on a cruise ship if he sent a formal application!
✌com sempre!
Nice jazz rendition!
The maestro
Still#1. Its Steve Gadd. That's a simple gimme.
if he reads at the same time ....then fell and improvise ....and read again....i have to learn more about the both !
Gadd-Consciousness !
This should have been titled the 'Jazz Fusion Queen'
Amei❤️

What is the story behind this? Why is Gadd playing along to dancing queen? Oh! It's his band! Yeah, I always liked that song too. Did he play drums on the original ?
Oo yes
Well Steve doing a cover of ABBA ...interesting.
What can one say?? By Gadd!!
I’ve never seen Gadd watch the score sheet so closely! Wtf 😂 Is this a 1st of April upload?
Hill Street Blues :-)
Never seen Steve Gadd reading music before. Kinda cool
He did that a bunch in the studio…pretty much all of those 70s and 80s LA session cats are all monster sightreaders from what I heard
He's a monster reader. I was in school with him and the stuff he could pull off was incredible. But to be honest....all the studio cats were great readers. But staying musical and still having "that feel" while reading was something else again.
How about Waterloo?
Dr. Feelgood ; ) Hey y'all - this is what greatness feels like right off the drum.
Gadd!!! Gadd!!! Gadd!!!
Gaddism all the way...!!!

Я уже писал- он не играет- он дышит инстрементом. И он ему отвечает.
Кто ещё знает таких- сбросьте.Именно ударные

I agree. I love Abba, love jazz, adore Steve Gadd. But not together. Interesting idea that doesn't work.
3:58
stuffの世界
?????WHAT?????
UH?????.....
lol
Muzak.
Gadd is sort of lost into his chart.
+Eric Van Buggenhaut yes lol but he still plays so well, that's the perfection side of him coming out!
+Eric Van Buggenhaut
I think it's great, you get to see Gadd doing a thing us common folk do, and he kills it! It adds that human element
Love Gadd, but this is one lame-ass arrangement.
I used to hate this song
??? without vocals this tune is just not happening.
i dont think you know what this video means
Yeah I'm really missing those profound lyrics.
REALLY ??? 🤔🤔🤔
EXCELLENT INTERPRETATION FROM MASTER GADD !!!
I think U should read the other comments and listen to it again !!!
Sure, everyone's a terrific musician, but this just ain't working.
What's the big deal. This doesn't rock Here comes Steve.....tap tap tap
