My great aunt was a kiltmaker and she always said that when pleating the fabric, the pattern should match, i.e. when lying flat you should be able to see the complete pattern. This means that some pleats can me about a couple of inches deep and others could be as much as six inches deep. Maybe I haven't explained it very well, but if you look at the back of any Scottish kilt you can see the whole tartan pattern.

I HAVE NEEDED YOUR VIDEO and I am blown away at the fact that you showed how to do the seemingly toughest parts--the pleats---with such ease and accuracy. Thanks to you, I will try my hand at making a kilt. You and your assistants did a really professional job on the video instruction and the tartan that you worked with is actually one of my favorites. MAY GOD BLESS YOU FOR HELPING EVERYONE WITH YOUR SKILLS.

You are absolutely correct. This is nothing like a real kilt. If it is supposed to be a feileadh mhor or belted plaid ,again it is wrorg. The material should be 60" wide by 5 yards long(approx) laid on the ground and pleated up to the width of the wearer leaving 2 ends plain. A belt is then put underneath. The wearer then lies down on it folds the plain ends over the front of the body fastens the belt .Now stand up. The material hanging down the back can be tucked in around the waist or pinned on the shoulder.
For many hundreds of years the FEILEADH MHOR or big blanket - PLAID means BLANKET not the pattern of the material - was worn by highlanders and was simply a way of carring that blanket around in a convenient way.

Great crash course for a beginner/faire garb, which is exactly what I need. The few pages I've found so far online have proven fairly confusing; if I'm going to go to the effort of hand-stitching with REAL tartan, I'm going to go to a professional. This is just what I was looking for. Thanks for filming it!

  • @Liekco

@ABWEndon There are 2 ways for kiltpleating, pleated to the sett and pleated to the stripe. In the video the kilt is pleated to the stripe.
Pleated to the sett means you repeat the pattern so that it does look like the unpleated cloth. When pleating to the stripe, the pleats are folded so that one particular line is centred on every pleat.

that was often a matter of preference. many dress kilts were made as you describe, called "pleating to sett". however for military kilts, a stripe in the pattern was chosen to center each pleat on. the latter method was called "pleating to stripe".

Make sure you have the right accessories first though, a pennacular brooch to bind it over the shoulder and a good four inch wide belt to hold it up with lol.

Please don't think that this has anything to do with how a real kilt is made or worn.
There are several sites (just Google) which will give a full explaination of how a proper modern kilt for a man is constructed, all the ways the pleats can be made to show off the tartan, how the shaping is calculated, the sewing, the canvas reinforcing, the lining, the fringed edge, the waistband and all.
There are sites explaining the older forms of kilt too.
The knowledge and skills are out there.

Very helpful video. I've been perusing, trying to find a kilt in the MacDonald of Glencoe tartan, and finally I just decided I'd make the bastard. Nothing like something you made yourself right. "Oh, that's a nice kilt, where did ye buy it?" "I made it..." Plus all the kilts you find are in two pieces where the sash is a separate piece all together, not like they did in the old days where it was all one big fabric. But your video needs more fitting music. Try "The Lament for the Viscount of Dundee" or "Ar Bhurach Na Laoi". Though the elevator music was pretty funny.

Not a bad video, but I am wondering why you hid the 'verticle' stripe in the plaid inside the pleats and not adjusted them so some or all of the verticle stripe would be on the edge of each pleat? It's all a matter of taste, I suppose. I always thought 'pleating to the stripe' exposed some or all of the stripe and not hid the stripe. Thanks!
