I tried with three 1.5V AA size battery and about 5 turns of coil and it picked up lights loads. Only, the battery got hot. Is there a way to avoid the heat on the battery?

Yes, required... Except for the ends to the wire, it is required throughout.. Else, the nail/screw will become part of the circuit, and will not be an electromagnet

Grrrr one major thing you and everyone else showing how to do this forgets to say/specify is that the copper wire has to be insulated. Why oh why does everyone forget to specify this. A lot of times you can't tell because the insulation is so thin and the same color as the copper wire. Please people who make these videos. Remember to specify the copper wire needs to be insulated.
