Discussing the Marginalization of IBS and Ways to Improve Care, with Mark Pimentel, MD

Despite being one of the most common conditions diagnosed by gastroenterologists and affecting 10-15% of people in the US, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) continues to be a largely marginalized condition.
Mark Pimentel, MD, executive director of the Medically Associated Science and Technology (MAST) Program at Cedars-Sinai, traces the roots of this issue back to the 1990s, when he says IBS was defined as a “diagnosis of exclusion,” considered to be a “wastebasket for whatever’s left.” Although he says most clinicians today have a better understanding of what IBS truly is, he pointed to lingering effects from its earlier stages that continue to hinder both patient care and gastroenterological research.
