I have never seen Boulez like this before: lively, passionate, energetic, gripping (even physically, - no teacher would allow himself to touch conductor-elevins in such a "hands-on" way today) humorous. After all, he was 63 years old in 1989, - but youthful in appearance.
He's a ridiculously misunderstood person...'talkers' think they know what they are talking about and spread silly notions that have no basis in fact. I dunno about when he was young, but older he was just such a dear person, at least in my experience
@@prof.sirjeffreydarling-mil3463 Whenever I come across someone who is significantly more intelligent than me, I feel intimidation and a bit of fear. Unfortunately, all too frequent I hate to admit. But I think that Boulez presented music in such a way that critics knew it was extremely well thought out, but didn't understand it, so they "poo poo" it. When I heard the Boulez recording of Petrushka, I thought "He's an old softy inside" because it wasn't as "masculine" as I would have thought he would done. Certainly not as peppery as Stravinsky's own, glorious, recording. When you see his face conducting the Bruckner 8, you see a man very deeply moved by this music that he previously didn't quite like as much (an opinion I still have of Bruckner, I can't escape his way out of progressing the music. It's luxurious, but repetitive. Drives me crazy. I agree with what Beecham said on Bruckner). I'm trying to appreciate the contemporary music, but the start, stop, fish in an aquarium effect doesn't work with me. It has to have a heart beat, or there's no emotion. I hope I find the heart beat in this music, because it doesn't make sense that it exists as it does, if it's all fake.
They all have the scores of his difficult music . Good thing . Who knows how to perform all of those Darmstadt leader'smusic . It is frightening enough on da page ! His intelligence ,awareness was remarkable !

63 years old in conductor's time is like 20 years old for a normal person's time

Imagine Boulez the composer being as good as Boulez the conductor.
