Back in high school, I took auto shop. My teacher thought he was going to outsmart the class and asked what tool he was holding up. I promptly answered that it was a lady slipper. Working with my granddad had many advantages, not only did I learn tricks and ways from and old timer as he called himself, but I got to spend quality time with my grandfather, fueling my love and drive for mechanics and automobiles.
Thank you for doing these videos! I just had my 05 egr cooler give up. I live in Ohio and plan on doing the work myself. And boy am I glad I service my truck myself, with good oil! Nice and clean :). Thanks again!
OK, I watched the whole video waiting for you to show us the secret to reinstalling the small curved upper fan shroud that's located just behind the shroud with the Powerstroke emblem on it at the front of the engine. PS, Joe your mechanic is an amazing guy. Hang onto him, he's worth his weight in gold. Great video but it has convinced me to pay someone else, rather than attempt to get to the EGR cooler if needed. Thanks again.
My Cousin purchased a used truck with a 6.0 for 5k about a year and a half ago, it is his family's only means of transportation. He works a regular job and don't have a lot of money; it ran fine and got good mileage, but about 2 weeks ago it started running rough and he discovered oil in the water. A mechanic diagnosed a failed oil cooler, and estimated a few K to replace the part. I wonder if some of this other stuff will be bad in it too, poor Cuz can't even afford the oil cooler and no way either of us could attempt all this to replace it. Diesels are very involved with regard to repairs.
I just had my alternator replaced. I think the original one produced 110 amps. The new one is 140 amps. (My truck also trickle charges the camper batteries). So I was so happy on my 45 minute to an hour drive back home not to see the battery light come on. I get to a hill where I had to stop for the light and however the truck holds it on a hill, is engaged. The light changes and I hit the accelerator and nothing happens. It's still idling but doesn't Rev and it doesn't move. I drop it into first (it's an automatic) and still no change. So I put it in neutral with the brake on, rev it and let the rpm's drop a bit before dropping it into drive. That worked. I had to do that one more time. After driving another 20 minutes I went to a hill and tried to make it do it again, it didn't. The garage I took it to said the two things. replacing the alternator and the pedal position indicator (the thing they suspect is the problem) don't have anything to do with each other. What do I know? All I know is it happened right on the heals of the repair and on a hill a I've been stopped on a half dozen times before without incident.
Years ago a lady brought in a 2.2 4cyl s-10 she had intended on us tearing down re-rimg and new bearings, I unbolted the valve cover and it would not let go I pryed and tapped and so on finally it let's go and I'll be..another valve cover under it ,I told boss man we have a serious Quaker state motor over here it was like a perfect wax replica of the valve cover ,we start chiseling away just to get to the dang head bolts we changed our mind and told the lady her best bet is a new or at least junk yard engine
I saw an engine that had been filled with nothing but Lucas oil additive once.... it took 400ft lbs of torque just to turn it over.... dumb people should always use the oil recommended on the filler cap and leave additives to people with brains but.... if they did I wouldn't rebuild so many chevy engines at $1000 labor each time and I'd have to work on something actually requiring effort.... lol 5.7 vortec full rebuild takes about 48 hours to lazily do solo at this point.... and I keep extra kits on hand for the morons around these Louisiana swamps that think Chevy means TANK.
I am glad that my 1st gen 7.3 PS motor does not have an EGR cooler. My 7.3 is much easier for the old shade tree to work on. I cringe each time I watch a mechanic work on any other the newer engines. The mechanics working on 6.0 and later Navistar engines must have the patience of a saint.
What's that part being removed @ 6:40? It broke on my truck last week and I was stranded for 3 days (could have been more) in the mountains. Long story short, replaced that part and all of the lost coolant and am back in business now. I would like to get just that piece so I can give it back to the mechanic that took it off of the spare cooler he had in his shop.
Have you ever done an EGR cooler in a van? My e450 blew it at 91k miles and it's bad. Planning on doing myself, just dont know how much harder it will be with that limited space.
My dad is a retired auto mechanic and during a teardown, he could immediately tell when Quaker State was used because of all the crap built up inside the engine. :(
I have a question about the 3 inch hose (mine is blue, yours was red). I replaced mine and it was very loose on the egr side, the other side snapped right in. After replacing it, I have a fast leak of coolant. Any idea why it's so loose on the egr side where it's gushing, and where can I go from here? I bought some backup heater hose from the auto parts store and a couple of clamps, can I get away with that? Should I just clamp the loose side of the blue hose? Any input is very helpful.
Any good mechanic needs several projects to make money, I had 5 parking spaces for vehicles awaiting parts or approval. Synthetic oil is my standard, if mineral oil is used, there is no warranty. Saving money on oil can ruin a very expensive engine, it's not worth it. I am happy to have left the dealership in 95, I can't count how many dead 6.9's and 7.3's I had to repair. Now I drive a Dodge V-10, and diesels are to be avoided like the plague.
Thank u for the videos I am confused though. I have a clean 2006 f350 with a 6.0 that I treat it like one of my kids (lol). I keep it in the garage and only drive it on nice days when it's not racing or snowing. I am thinking about getting rid of it and leasing a f150 but I like not having car payments right now but I am nervous about how my f350 might cost me in the future. Any advise???
Silver1ton elc coolant, make sure your boost does not go over 25psi if your not studded. If its running good then try not to worry. I run t6 with archoil and love what it did to help my truck 05 6.0. i have all updates but not studded and i hold it to the floor every time i enter highway. it has tow tune. get a bluetooth odb dongle and torque pro app and you can watch almost everthing going on in your truck after you set up app. The late, Diesel tech ron, has given us values to watch on our torque app so you know what you are looking at. thanks to powerstoke help i am able to enjoy my truck with no worries. ty.
I have a 2002 7.3 Powerstroke Ford Excursion and I would like to know more about that truck. It came with 189000k miles diesel. now it's 204k. It runs and drives good. but you have many on 6.0 not 7.3. Why is that?
Its basically because Bill makes videos based on what comes through his shop. Not many 7.3L come in for repairs, so he doesn't get to make many videos about them. That being said, the 7.3L is a solid engine that doesn't have many problems. Just make sure your doing your maintenance regularly and that truck should last way beyond 204k
He was alot more patient than me. After the second video, I've decided to set my truck on fire and send the video to my bank. I'm not throwing good money after bad on this money pit. I thought it would be something someone with 40 years experience could change, but I refuse to tear apart an engine to replace a cooler!😡🤬😡

did you use the bulletproof egr cooler
What miles were you at when your egr cooler went?

Nice to see I'm not the only one that goes the extra mile. Money well spent! Keep it up guys.
I did my my EGR valve myself today and I was so proud of myself until I watched this.
Would love to see more videos like this. Excellent little series.

Those red plugs look like new battery post caps!

External oil cooler recommend to replace factory cooler? Or stock replacement ?

James Fenton Any diesel older than 2002 is a problem.
Any diesel newer than 2001 is a problem.
How does the oil end up on the Intercooler? Does it blow past the turbo somehow when it’s crappy oil???
Blown turbo seals
is there any way you would notice the unison ring is bad?
Can I use a droid phone instead of I phone to take pics?..😂😂 anyhow good video.. Doing my EGR this week
