      Exactly... especially if it happens going low into a turn, which gives the car a chance to turn sharply to the outside and make a near-head-on strike against the retaining barrier. Wrecks into the unfortunate pit-exit and other angles that lead to almost head-on hits at Atlanta and Watkins Glen can be horrific, too. I still remember Steve Grissom backing straight into the pit exit (?) wall at Atlanta and ejecting his fuel sell across the track -- and then getting hit even MORE after that. Miracle he just got a bunged-up ankle out of all that.

    Daytona is more of a week long event than just the 500. It starys on Tuesday with the Busch clash, which is a non-points event, almost like an all-star event. The 500 is also the only event that you race for qualifying posititions. The duals are on thursday night and your finish it either of those races determine your starting spot for the 500.
    Those three races are much shorter than the 500. One thing most formula 1 fans dont realize is how long these races are. The typical Daytona 500 is between 3.5 and 4 hours from start to finish

  • @88teffie

    After a car has been in a wreck (during a race) there is a 5 minute repair clock. A car must meet minimum speed (varies based on the track) by the end of that 5 minute clock. If not, they are out of the race. The only time a back up car can be used is if a car wrecks during qualifying or practice. Then the back up car will have to start at the back & will lose their qualifying spot. As in, if a pole sitter wrecks in practice, he starts in the back in a back up car, not on the pole.

    @6:50 thank God for the HAANS device. A simultaneous head-on with the wall and side strike is what killed Dale Earnhardt. He disliked the device and called it "That #&*@#$ noose." However, the very injury it was designed to prevent is what he got and killed him. Because of that, the HAANS device is mandatory in ALL forms of auto racing.

  • @JohnnyV76V
    @JohnnyV76V 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    13:46 The teams have backup cars but those are only used for if the main car is wrecked/damaged during practice/qualifying. If they have to switch to one of those after qualifying, but before the race, they start in the back as it wasnt the same car they qualified in. Once the race officially starts, they can only use that car. If they are involved in a wreck and need a spare part to get the car running again on track, they could potentially use the spare car's parts. However this doesnt happen all too often as the time it takes to pull the part off the other car and get it onto the racing car. so at that point, most teams retire the car because there is too much damage/work on the car to get it to the minimum required speed to stay on the track.

    3:40 That looks a lot like Davey Allison's crash in the 1992 All-Star Race.
    4:51 Just FYI, NASCAR have a livestreaming feature called NASCAR Drive, and you can choose to stream onboard from any of (I think) 5 different onboard cameras during the race.
    9:48 The banking at Bristol is steep for a short track, but it's not the steepest on the schedule, like it used to be. The latest reconfiguration introduced progressive banking from 26 degrees on the bottom to 30 degrees up top in the corners, and 6-10 degrees on the straights, but the turns used to be banked at 36 degrees iirc, steeper than the Monza oval (30 degrees), Daytona (31 degrees), or Talladega (33 degrees).
    An interesting geography tidbit, Bristol (the town, not the track) is split by the Tennessee-Virginia state line, and Bristol Motor Speedway is on the Tenessee side. (Because of this, track owner Bruton Smith decided to schedule an American football game [called the Battle at Bristol] between the University of Tennessee Volunteers and the Virginia Tech Hokies, which took place September 10, 2016. Tennessee won, 45-24. As a result, the current Google Maps image of Bristol Motor Speedway has a tarmac outline of an American football field in the infield. [DannyBTalks did a video on this back in September.])
    10:14 Jimmie Johnson hadn't won (and still hasn't) since the spring Dover race in 2017, the spring after he tied the record at seven championships.
    10:59 Exactly. Ryan Newman's wreck was coming to the checkers.
    15:46 Nobody's ever done the three-peat in the 500 before, but if anybody can, it's Hamlin. He's one of the best plate racers today, and he's at the peak of his career. I could go on listing reasons why Hamlin's the favorite, but just go watch The Iceberg's video, "How and Why Denny Hamlin Is the 2021 Daytona 500 Favorite". He does a better job articulating this than I could ever hope to.

    You can only switch to a backup car before the race starts. Once the race starts, if you wreck, you're done, see you next week. Exhibition races that were previously held at Suzuka Circuit's East Short Course config and in Mexico City and Montreal's international road courses did allow for backup car switches during the race, if certain circumstances were met, IIRC, but only because they were non-championship, non-points races.

    As someone who grew up watching NASCAR in the '90s, and stopped in 2002, it's weird seeing how different the crashes are now. Even with the roof flaps and everything, cars used to flip and tumble a lot more than they do now, which I'm not sure is better. The interesting thing about NASCAR crashes is, flipping tends to be safer for the driver. If you watch wrecks from the 1990s, you'll see the cars tumble, bits of sheet metal and such flying off, and all of that is energy being dissipated. It LOOKS horrifying, but a blunt impact is far worse. It's why no one really thought Dale Earnhardt's crash was a big deal at first; it didn't LOOK like a bad impact, and people were used to seeing cars flip down the straightaways with little to no injuries to the drivers. Granted, the cars themselves are probably much safer now, too. It's wild seeing the difference 20 years can make.

    13:45 If a car is in a wreck and is not able to continue under it’s own power, it’s out. No backup car - the only time you could have a backup car is if your main car for that race was taken out in practice/qualifying or another event that week(Like the all-star or the Clashes). As for positioning, if the car is still able to run, they restart where they are at the time of caution if they’re running at a reasonable speed and in control of the car(IE at least pit road speed and not spinning around)- so if Joey was 13th when the yellow came out and he was in control of the car, he’ll start 13th on the restart.

    13:31 No. During a race drivers aren't allowed to go to their backup cars. The backup car is in case a driver crashes their primary car during practice or qualifying. Additionally, at this point of the season, with the pandemic, teams were bringing only one car to the race since the only on-track event was the race.

    #3 was very surprising, both because this was a restart and because flips are normally restricted to the two fastest tracks, Talladega and Daytona. Although Kansas Speedway track is known for insane wrecks, I doubt anyone was expecting a flip.
    #2 is exactly why SAFER barriers are absolutely necessary. I still can’t believe he sarcastically said “Fantastic!” before getting out of the car looking for something to punch. To be fair, it was his fourth straight DNF.

  • @SAVikingSA
    @SAVikingSA 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The fire in the crash at 4:30 is caused by the oil pump breaking. They use a dry sump oil system, which pumps pressurized oil to the engines. Most road cars are wet sump, meaning the oil is contained in a pan at the bottom of the engine, and is circulated by the rotation of the crank shaft. Dry sumps are better for race cars that see high G loads, because they maintain consistent oil pressure throughout the engine regardless of G loads. Wet sump systems aren't pressurized, and so G forces can starve areas of the engine, leading to heat and friction failure.
    The drawback is that if a part, like an oil pump, is broken off in a crash, oil sprays onto hot parts like the exhaust and can ignite. Seems bad, but engine failures caused by wet sump systems were usually more dangerous and definitely caused more fires.

    #4 is one that made me hold my breath (besides Newman's and Preece's accidents). The 7 that wrecked there is Justin Allgaier, a veteran of the Xfinity series. He ended up being taken to the hospital for observations after the accident, which happened at the Kentucky Speedway. They had another race the next day, which Allgaier did drive in after being cleared.

    That NASCAR crashes rarely result in serious injury these days is a fitting testament to the focus on safety the series has given, especially since losing one of its most prominent stars, Dale Earnhardt, Sr., to a freak accident 20 years ago today (2/18/2001).
    To put it into perspective, F1 losing Ayrton Senna was equivalent to what happened with NASCAR losing Dale Sr. -- but the real parallel, to me, is what happened with another seven-time champion of his series, Michael Schumacher, even if it was outside racing. I keep checking in on Mr. Schumacher, in hopes that he might regain some of his personality and lucidity, but as of now... just sadness.
    Also, that "retaliation" thing around 6:25 or so? Totally deliberate. Happens fairly often. The race control of NASCAR only penalizes it if it's truly obvious and egregious -- far cry from what the race stewards of F1 (and even IndyCar) do.
    Backup cars are only used if a team's primary car is damaged during practice or qualifying. The car that starts the race is the one the team must use until the end. If it takes damage and cannot be repaired to raceworthiness within 6 minutes, it must be retired from the race. (There is also a minimum speed cars must maintain to be considered raceworthy. Not sure what current rules are regarding failing that.)

    There was a wreck one year where a car went airborne into the fence above the wall, and the engine was in the walkway between the grandstand and the track, on fire, and a tire landed on some lady's lap. Keep in mind the rubber on those tires are at 44 to 49 degrees C after a slide like that, and the wheel hub without the tire weighs 62 lbs (28 Kg), 75 lbs (34 Kg) with the tire. She had 3rd degree burns, a broken spine, a dislocated elbow, and a shattered femur on one leg, if I remember right. Pretty sure it was a grand national/Nationwide Series wreck, in the lower series, the day before the 500 back in 2013. Really terrifying stuff.
