    In 1982 I attended the AMA Superbike rounds at Riverside, Laguna Seca, and Sears Point. Eddie Lawson on the Kawasaki won the first two, but missed Sears Point due to injury. Mike Baldwin won that race on Honda #43.

    This was the time for Superbike racing like the early days of NASCAR. The machines were, essentially, stock vehicles with old-fashioned hot-rod techniques and modifications applied. Even the factory bikes like the Hondas were, with a little help from the old racing department in Japan (RSC), largely a creation of the engineering genius of mechanics and fabricators like Udo Gietl and Todd Schuster (who built the BMW superbikes a few years before), and Mike Velasco, Larry Worrell, Merlin Plumlee, Dennis Zickrick and Ray Plumb of Team Honda. The #43 bike seen in the Hall at 3:32 was Mike Baldwin's factory ride from 1982, which was in private hands for 20 years before acquisition by the Collection Hall in the mid 2000s. American Honda had two of these machines at their facility in 1986, and that's when one (Baldwin's) was sold. The other was eventually asked for by Japan, and the guys at American Honda's racing dept were not happy. Subsequently, they would borrow the Baldwin #43 machine periodically for display at events. Freddie Spencer had his bike for some years, before it was acquired by some party in Japan, and one of Roberto Pietri's machines ended up there as well, I believe. But these were all American Honda machines. Only the Ron Pierce #97 bike (1980) and one other restored machine with a fair amount of factory parts remain in America, so far as I am aware. For now. Another mostly-factory bike will be coming together soon, I hope.
