The Creative Process In Your Building Project

  • Where do ideas for building projects come from?
To me, so much of it comes from the client, which is why I'm not concerned that there won't be enough good ideas to make a project really shine, because every client is unique, with different thoughts and experiences.
Some are more visionary than others of course, but either way, we have to sort through what's most important, and figure out what we can do to get there.
Certainly, I've got opinions and ideas that are always being cultivated in my mind, but I generally look at them as the backboard that a client can bounce their ideas off of.
That way, we go back and forth; like an improvisation where my skills and experiences are underlying the process to help facilitate discovery and this creative process.
When I was younger, I used to worry about creativity running dry, or as something that came from within, which adds to the pressure to create and innovate.
Now, I look at creativity differently, to see that the ideas are already out there, and we simply need to be open and aware and attentive, so that we can put them together in our own "new" way.
Many creative folks from Rick Ruben to Alan Watts think this way, and as I've gotten older and continue to reflect on my way of looking at the world, I've found this to be completely liberating.
This isn't something that's a passive activity either, because for me (and for many others), there's a true practice to cultivate this mindset, and see the creative process of synthesis in a positive and opportunistic way.
Clear thinking and highly focused, scheduled work sessions are key, because if you just hope it'll happen, it probably won't.
It's a balance between taking things really seriously and professionally, while also loosening our grip on the reigns enough to discover new ideas that are all around us.
This is the process, and while "writer's block", or the "empty page syndrome" can be a thing, we can immediately bust through by simply asking questions, looking around, and seeing what starts to come together.
If this sounds like blue-sky nonsense, what I can genuinely say (and what my clients say as well), is that this is actually how it works, and this is how we make the jump from initial conversations into actual architecture, in a way that is both unexpected and deeply rooted in our goals.
That way, when we see a drawing for the first time, the comment is often something like "I didn't know what it would look like, but yes, that actually does what we talked about!".
