Have you found yourself struggling when playing a certain tennis stance like the open stance forehand? Or perhaps you're confused with all the stances in tennis like the neutral, closed, open, semi-open, cross over step and so on and you don't know where to start?
The truth is that all stances in tennis begin from two simple foundations: your ability to play off your left leg and your ability to play off your right leg. That's it!
You have to be comfortable and balanced when hitting a forehand off your left leg and off your right leg and if you can do that then playing in any stance will be much easier.
The video above shows you 4 different drills you can use to improve your ability to push off either leg and hitting forehands or backhands.
Drill #1 - call out your dominant leg when playing mini tennis. This will help you become more aware of which leg your hitting your forehand right now.
Drill #2 - catch & throw a medicine ball when standing on one leg. This helps you really feel how the leg loads and drives up when you throw the ball back - and it also teaches your body better coordination.
Drill #3 - step on a stair, push up and swing. This drill is great for warm up and it forces your legs to work correctly since you always have to push up when going upstairs.
Drill #4 - hit off one leg and maintain balance. Playing off one leg improves balance and coordination and once you keep both feet on the ground you'll feel very stable.
In summary, playing an open stance forehand in tennis can be quite tricky if you don't master the footwork fundamentals which simply means that you can play well off your left and off your right leg.
