    The thing is most medium class vehicles come with drum brakes at the rear. And handbrake applies only to rear wheels.
    The brakes are not that powerful so you won’t notice anything dramatic when you pull the handbrake at 100 kph. It just slows down the car extremely slowly. Feels more like an engine brake rather than disk brakes.
    But, if you pull it extremely hard like your life depends on it, you will see that the rear wheels lock up and start screaming. Now whether you car will drift like crazy or just come to a stop depends on your steering and road level. If road is level and you haven’t turned your steering, the rear wheels just screech and the car slowly comes to a stop. Now when you pull the handbrake extremely hard, if you turn your steering even slightly or if the road is uneven the car will start drifting and you will most likely lose control. There are even chances of toppling the car.

      Most, almost all modern cars and even cheaper ones (even corollas as an example if I'm correct) come equipped with all 4 disc brakes as a safety feature. If you are expecting a wheel lock, you will need to install a more powerful handbrake than most dealership stock handbrakes (like you see on those modified drift cars with a really long handles for easy use). Or another option is pulling really hard as the comment already says.

      Nice explanation 👍. I never trusted the handbrakes much in panic breaking situation and this kind of confirms it. Since ABS is now mandatory on (Indian) cars you should just brake as hard as possible and hope for the best. Already this was tested involuntarily 2-3 times on our roads. Works fine

      You say that you could lock up the wheels. But what if you pull it so the wheels is on the edge of locking up. Then you will have the most braking.
      But I agree only using rear brakes will be a lot less effective than front brakes.

      the car have a brake distribution usually more front bias though modern cars have an automatic distribution system, you can not lock the wheels because of the geometry of the sunspenssion his car is a sedan which means it have more weight in the front, even in hatch who lock rears easily you wont lock rears with handbrake because it just have at best 40 per cent of the total power who uses the brakes unless his brake is modify to drift which it adds more power to the rears

    1. Handbrakes usually are much weaker than foot brakes because a) foot acton is stronger than arm action b) foot brakes are hydraulics (more force and less travel of brake pads) whereas handbrakes apply force slightly amplified by the handbrake lever length. Also as car ages the handbrake cable friction increases and provides still lesser force on brake pads. Hydraulics are not significantly affected by aging.
    2) Handbrakes work on only rear wheels. The weight is lesser at the rear so a stronger handbrake will make the rear wheel skid on hard handbraking.
    3) Purpose of handbrakes is to keep vehicle parked in position. In case handbrakes are intended for drifting, these are usually modified to be able to provide more force than a stock car.
    4) Foot brakes are your best bet during emergency braking, Handbrake will not provide any better braking but may lead to making the vehicle unstable.
    5) When I want my car to drift/do 180's using a weak handbrake, I apply full handbrake and slight pressure on foot brake. This causes the rear to lock as two brakes are acting on it but the front wheel doesnt get locked.

      i doubt it, he just wasnt pulling hard enough. handbrake is a cable running directly to the brakes, no way for any electronic systems to interfere

  • @abhishekpg9615
    @abhishekpg9615 ปีที่แล้ว

    Pulling handbrake along with service brake won't do anything because under panic braking already the abs unit comes into action to prevent lockup. This means you already applied all wheel brakes with maximum pressure you can. Pressing handbrake on top of it overrides the abs unit and increases chance of rear wheel lockup which affects stability. But that being said handbrakes are also called emergency brakes for the very reason that they are mostly actuated by mechanical means. So in the event your service brakes fail (which is hydraulic in most cases), say due to leakage of brake oil, you can rely on handbrake to work and slow down the car. But the brake force offered by handbrake is very low compared to service brake and is not a replacement to service brake nor can it supplement service brakes (unless you wanna get those extra drift points and a couple of stitches on the way back home i recommend not using handbrake at all).

  • @StudentDriverBR
    @StudentDriverBR 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    In cars that have electronic parking brake, you can press the button and the car decelerates, in cars with manual handbrake like this, you need to push it slowly to decelerate, otherwise the rear wheel will lock, based on several comments here i need to explain how manual hand brakes work, the handbrake is connected to a cable and this cable is connected to the rear brake if the car has drum brakes the cable is straight connect to the brake and if the car has disc brakes the cable will push oil to brake similar to when you use normal brakes, whatever the ABS has no authority over this as the ABS is on the front of the car and the handbrake lock system is in the brake caliper itself, some cars like Vectra and Zafira Jeep Wrangler have disc brake but also have drums inside it for handbrake

      Pulling the handbrake will do nothing but make the situation more dangerous. All normal braking systems with ABS are able to stay on the edge of the avaliabe traction of your tires, pulling the handbrake is not magically going to increase the traction avaliable to you. Also, FWD/RWD is irrelevant with regards to braking.

    Cable or electronic handbrakes(as in Tata Safari or Jeep compass) don't work at high speeds, if you actually want to drift you need to upgrade to hydraulic handbrakes so that rear wheels lock and turn the steering to opposite direction so that car slides sidewards (only rear wheel drive cars can drift, fwd or 4wd can't)

    A hand brake is an EMERGENCY system when your actual brakes fail and you have stomped your foot brakes and they fail to stop then pull it ,nothing will happen while the car is “accelerated”.

    ⚠️The behaviour of the car not only depends upon the car, version,edition but sometimes also on if it's model/trim(low,top end) and you're car might skid upon doing these if the abs, traction control feature is missing or turned off or currently unavailable at the moment if there's error in that system visible on instrument cluster, so do not blindly beleive or assume same to happen in your case.Drive safe.

    What would happen if we go in a speed of 100KM and shift the gear to Reverse?

    • @adithyank2066
      @adithyank2066 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We can't shift bro😅

    • @xJonathan6405
      @xJonathan6405 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On most cheaper cars the reverse gear doesn't have a synchromesh and is straight cut (thus the distinctive whine from the gearbox when reversing), so it would be extremely difficult if not impossible to even get it into gear in the first place at that speed. If you do manage to get it in gear and engage the clutch, you'll simply overrev the engine to the moon and likely completely destroy your engine by making the pistons slap against your valves, and a whole host of other internal engine failures

    Pulling on the handbrake while driving will in the best case slow you down very ineffectively and wear out your parking pads, or in the worse case lock up your rear wheels and make you lose control of the car. So unless your name is ken block, don’t pull on the handbrake while on the move

  • @arjunprasad28
    @arjunprasad28 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What you are talking works only on mechanical hand brakes. The new age cars have electrical hand brakes. They are not even called hand brakes anymore, they are called parking brakes because they are used only when you park. Many cars even move normally with just around 10-20% resistance, with the hand brakes on. I have a Honda City 2014 model which does not budge an inch with the hand brakes on.

    I hope ABS & EBD and Traction control and what ever every thing should be switched off before trying this act in your modern car, to know the real power of the parking brake,
    Apply Engine brake from 100 to 50 & Next apply Gradually Handbrake which makes the car halt to stationary in Brake failures

Out of pure instinct pulled the handbrake and was literally shocked how quick the car stopped... Everyone who has decent car control should try using the handbrake in an empty space (unlike this dude doing it on a public highway)
