My first teacher used to always say, "think slow play fast." I was always pretty absorbent and a quick learner, but don't really know that I truly got that one.
Thank you! So many good points here! Your very first tip, about right hand thumb position, was true for me. I would add to it by saying, for me, it was caused by holding the flute too close to my body / parallel to my shoulders. When I realised this and pushed the end of the flute more out and away from my body, both my right and left hand position improved: the right hand was not so scrunched up, while the left was now at a better angle for covering the 4th finger G key properly. As you say, everybody is different, but I would imagine this one is commonly true for taller people with long arms and long fingers? We need to create more space!
This came right on time. I’m working on getting fast by starting slow, but will definitely consider the info in your video. It’s all mental really. I tried getting fast by trying to play fast but it only stresses me out. Then I realized fast fingers are the result of a strongly focused mind. Fast mind=fast fingers. Thanks Tatiana! 💯❤️✨😊
At 76, my problem is arthritis in my finger joints. My fingers are close to the keys, but they don't move quickly as they did 60 years ago. I guess part of this is because from when I was 12 until I retired at 65 I didn't play at all. Maybe if I kept playing they would probably still move like they did when I was 12.
It is such a struggle that I know so many in this community have! I am looking at bringing and expert onto the channel to discuss this. I think it would be so helpful!
You mentioned checking how far our fingers come off of the keys when a key is not pressed, on an open hole flute, how much gap needs to be left in order to allow the hole to be "open"?
I can’t hold my flute in balance as it is rolled in and out. So I bought a little plastic thing that is supposed to help preventing this. It kind of helps but is it ok to use it for long term solution?
Thanks for the tip. I am verry much a begginer but I feel like I am about to quit. Had a decent flute for about two years now. Restarted many times always training for few months but. Every day, every time different problem. I just seem like I can't get anything right. Any Idea how to stay motivated ? :( I love the sound of flute but I might switch back to guitar.
Hmmm. I guess I would love to know a bit more about where you are specifically getting stuck. Perhaps you could tell me a little more and I can make some recommendations for you!
I use a Thumbport II and a Fingerport for my left hand. They have helped ease the pain in my hands (64 w/ arthritis). I’m also able to move my fingers faster because it’s easier to balance my flute.

Awesome work! I love how self aware you are in your practice process. Such a powerful tool. The mental aspect is HUGE!
You are so excellent pedagogue, thank you
Great tips! But does that mean Twoset Violin were right: "If you can play it slowly, you can play it fast" ?! 😱
i like to think about it as "if you can play it slowly, you can play it fast *er* "
Yes 😁😁😁😁 💯% yes!
thankyou this will help me so munch
Thanks!
Pleasure and thank you!

Question, my right pinky hurts and it tenses up and it affects my index and middle finger by tensing them as well. Is there a way to fix or help it?

Absolutely! I would definitely recommend it, especially if it helps you hands find a comfortable position!
Saw a clse up of GAlway once and his G Sharp finger was hanging ay down below the key. Very strange.

Does anyone use the thumb port flute rest?
