  • This is the ninth episode of Volume II and covers my TransAmerica Trail ("the TAT") drive on September 16, 2023 from Salida Colorado to the Spruce Campground in the Gunnison National Forest.
The drive is via the tight, rough, and brushy Poncha Creek Trail.
I have lowered the volume to make road noise, my occasional comments and grumbles, and the rattling of hardware and melting ice in the back of the 4Runner less obtrusive. If you want to hear that stuff you might want to turn up the sound.
I am struck by the beauty of some of these country roads and by the number of people who extended a friendly wave as I drove past. But the TAT also tests fortitude - of both you and your vehicle. It’s a magnificent country out there, but it will challenge you. If you’re planning such a trip: prepare well, be careful, take your time, and enjoy it!

Wow, such amazing country. Do you dream to the sound of sloshing ice?

Is Poncha Creek Trail not the normal route? I remember a much easier approach to the summit.

There are two routes: Poncha Creek Trail, which I used, is the one laid out in Sam's CO3 track. Marshall Pass Road (County Road 200), that I understand is a much better road that runs generally parallel, also goes to Marshall Pass. One thing to note is the absence of signs at the place I stopped. The main Marshall Pass signage is actually a little below me at the Pass. I'm sure most people - wiser people? - use the better road.

      Absolutely. Rough, desolate, and big.
