    The second-gen games use a lot of question marks for glitch characters. I guess it's some sort of failsafe to ensure map tiles don't appear in their place (Though that may still fail).

    • @TheLoveMario
      @TheLoveMario 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's because the charset is way bigger than the space took by the English characters, so the empty space in the charset is all filled with the question mark tile. In the JP version, the charset's size is exactly the same except in this case it's barely just big enough to fit all the hiragana, which explains why the charset is so unnecessarily big in the non-JP versions

    • @llSuperSnivyll
      @llSuperSnivyll 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've tried a similar thing between Japanese and English silver versions, and it worked a little differently.
    The Japanese silver reboots automatically, where the English silver will "connect" to a glitched trade screen even after the Japanese copy has rebooted. This was performed on actual consoles though, not on an emulator.
    Wondering if the Crystal version changed trade enough to change how it glitches out, or if it's an emulation error causing the Japanese version to get past the loading screen.

    i tried to trade pokemon from the japanese yellow version to my red version on gameboy colors. when i traded a haunter from the japanese version, it showed up as a parasect on the english version. then, in the japanese version, random pokemon started showing up such as snorlax and other ones, showing that i had traded it from my english version.(I hadn't.) then, the japanese version just became a bunch of random text and letters. I tried this twice, both times with the same result.

    • @kuru969
      @kuru969 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It might be because japan's red and green versions' coding differ from red and blue's. perhaps japanese yellow has different pokemon coding than red, and that caused your haunter to change species, because it could be that haunter and parasect share similar coding. idk, that's just what I think.

    • @AngelOfDarknessYT
      @AngelOfDarknessYT 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think basically what it is, due to the limited storage capacity on the old Gameboy carts, the different language data simply wasn't included in the different localizations. The developers probably didn't see the point cramming it in, since it was unlikely kids from different countries would actually meet up and trade Pokémon. So of course, when two different language games ARE connected, the data corrupts since the language data is missing, and we get this lovely mess.

      AngelOfDarkness Stranglely enough, Korean Gold and Silver can link
      with English versions no problem.
      English version will display some letters (since it can't load korean) but
      only a few so its fully playable. Korean version on other hand has
      English letters stored away in the data so all english characters will
      be shown.

    It corrupts because the English version does not contain the Japanese data, and vice versa. Not sure why Japanese version still works fine.

  • @octonezd
    @octonezd 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Japanese version didn't frozen because its name limit is more than EU/US/other version. Other region versions can't handle big names, and they froze/glitch

    • @Alex_Off-Beat
      @Alex_Off-Beat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's actually the other way around, the US version allows 10 characters per name whereas the Japanese version only allows 5. The reason the US version freezes and the Japanese version doesn't is because the US version is coded to not allow links with non-US versions of Pokemon. The JP version has no such check and so glitches out due to the combination of long names and invalid language data.

    • @octonezd

      The japanese version adds invisible "_" to every symbol

    • @Alex_Off-Beat
      @Alex_Off-Beat 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      OctoNezd
      I'm not really sure what you mean by an invisible "_". Both versions add invisible control characters to the end of player names. I really think the main reason for the crashing/glitching is the fact that since the JP version came out first the devs never programmed in any checks to see if you were trying to link up with an invalid version since there was only one version of Pokemon out at that time. Whereas later the US version's devs added in a check to make sure that you couldn't link with a different region's version.

All of the Pokémon in the Spanish version have the exact same name as the English version and none of them use any diacretic marks on the vowels (á, í, ú, ü, ó. This is why you cannot link the Japanese version with the International versions.
    Linking between the English and German/French/Spanish/Italian versions should work fine.
    Also, you cannot link the Korean version with the Japanese or International versions.
    It is a fact that the first generation Pokemon games were not released in South Korea, making the Time Capsule useless in the Korean version of Gold and Silver.
    VBAlink cannot link GB/GBC games, only GBA games.
    Goomba is a GB emulator for GBA. Link feature was planned for Goomba, but it got discontinued before such feature was implemented.
    So, the only hope for emulation of 4-Player GB games (Not just SGB games) is through RetroCopy.
    GB emulators with 2P link play: NO$GMB, TGB Dual, BizHawk
    GB emulators with 4P link play: None for the moment

    In the ds games it links perfectly (Like US Black with Japan Patched Black 2

    • @Megadoomable
      @Megadoomable ปีที่แล้ว

      Damn, 10 years ago. Here's an update.
      I remember trying it with a Japanese Pokemon Black with US Pokemon Black 2.
      The Japanese Pokemon Black was an actual cart but Black 2 was on an R4. It linked just fine.
      Also, the 3DS can read Japanese Pokemon Blsck as I was able to transfer to Pokemon to Pokemon Bank before I was able to mod my 3DS, but it won't let you start it because Gen 5 has DSi Enhancements and as a result is region locked on DSi and 3DS. DS/DS Lite works fine (due to no region locking + non DSi Enhanced games are region free) but without the DSi Enhanced features. (EX: Pokegear camera) as DS/DS Lite doesn't have a camera.
