"To Smash Scrubzone": Still lead's me to one question... Where the heck is Sonic and Tails in this game?! I'm also glad they put the Mean Bean Machine in Sonic Mania. Sonic has excellent IQ, and so does Tails! Sonic has the know how to Ro-Buttnik at his own game he created! Better with Sonic and the others in the game! If Sonic beat Ro-Buttnik at the end of this Game I could imagine ol' Ro-Buttnik griping as he was escaping the explosion, "I HATE THAT HEDGEHOG!!!!" Looking red in the face as always! LOL!

They're almost exactly the same game except MBM even got chopped down slightly, the backgrounds don't even change over the course of the levels. And at least Puyo got a vastly improved sequel a little over 2 years later which completely overshadows each version anyway.
Even if it is just a reskin of Puyo Puyo, these sprites are fucking EXCELLENT. Honestly they alone make me wish many of these robots made a proper debut as villains, they just scream a hell of a lot more personality than say Black Doom, the Sinister 6, or Lyric. Imagine a running stage while Ffuzzy chases on a chariot, what if Arms and Skweel tag teamed like a wrecking ball, just to name a few. Wishful thinking of course, that cartoon while beloved to me is very unlikely to ever be referred to again.

I just watched it. The computer gets exactly the bean colour it needs every time. Lots of 4 combos to drop a constant stream of singles on the player. The only thing that disrupts it is when the player forced some beans onto the comp side which mucks up its plan.

Both are 1993 but the cartoon came out first (september) and the Mean Bean Machine game afterwards (november). It's hard to say as the game could have had delays for its tv release. The game is a clone of Compile's Puyo Puyo from 1991 on the MSX2, the main change is just the characters (check on here - the final enemy is Satan instead of Robotnik, the name was censored for western release)

I remember writing those password on memo because i had pretty hard time with this game. I had to fail each robot several times until i found out the way to beat them. Very fun game, brought me back to childhood when i was playing it on my old Pentium I

All robots appear in the first episode of "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog" Scratch and Grounder, unlike the other ones, appear in every single one; Coconuts appear in most of them, but he does not in the second one. 2. Scratch, Grounder and Coconuts appear here much smarter than in the cartoons, where they are depicted as idiots. 3. Sonic and Tails only appear offscreen. It is flatout canon that they were the ones who were fighting Eggman's henchbots, and Has Bean (the guy who was between the two puzzles) was helping them. 4. PINGAS!
Believe it or not, there is a possible chance for Arms to do a 4+ Combo. True story, I actually got 5 yee haws from Arm once. And this happened even though he was ironically the first and easiest stage in this game.
So many memories of joy and frustration. But being the first game I ever beat, it holds some really heavy nostalgic value. That, and I loved The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog growing up X3
It sucks that this had to replace Puyo Puyo, but at the same time it's very iconic. Has a lot of its own personality too. Since Sega owns the Puyo Puyo franchise it might be interesting if they made a sort of follow-up to Mean Bean Machine.
I'm not sure we'll ever get a proper follow up to Mean Bean Machine, but I'd love if the AoSTH Dr. Robotnik was a hidden guest character in a new Puyo Puyo Team Meat is also making a game called Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine, which is like this game but you also have to maneuver the pieces around hazards like spinning sawblades!
While I absolutely love this game, I find it a little sad that Coconuts was put at Level 4 while Scratch and Grounder got 12 and 8 respectively. Coconuts has always been the smartest of the three in the cartoon, and he deserves to be placed in Level 12 but with Scratch's AI. 😔 Likewise, Grounder should've been at Level 4 with Coconuts's AI, and Scratch at 8 with Grounder's AI. Besides, wouldn't it make more sense for Robotnik to resort to Coconuts at the very end? Coconuts was always the one getting left out in the show.
Robotnik probably considered Coconut lesser than his other creations just because he’s an older model than Scratch or Grounder. So he sent his weaker robots out first and saved what he considers his big guns for the later rounds. I have a soft spot for Coconuts too, so I get what you are saying.
Excellent playthrough, man. I especially love the cast in this game. Aside from Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts, the robots in this game should've returned in newer Sonic games as Dr. Eggman's team of Badniks against Sonic and his friends. They could've piloted Eggman's giant robots for him thereby saving him the trouble. ;) But, that's just wishful thinking on MY part, though. ^^
My friend and I used to play this game for hours and hours against each other. It became quite an addiction after a while. My friend got particularly good at it beating the game on Hardest without dying like it was no big deal. He'd get up to level 99 on exercise mode and just keep going. Getting like 12 Yippies in a row at times. It was insane.
Man, its good to see someone else w the same addiction as me. I also finished hardest mode without losing and got to 99 and kept going. lol. I miss this game

I remember once, I got the password for robotnik online and tried to beat him a countless number of times, but one day I handed the controller to my dad (keep in mind he didn’t know anything about how to play) and he spontaneously put the beans in the right place to successfully beat him! Freaking weird huh? Btw I swear to god I’m not lying
I'm so glad that this is already in the Nintendo Switch now. But I also have the original game cartridge and of course the Sega Genesis console. I remember those sleepless nights because of this great game...:)

I used to rage so hard on this because of how difficult it is to compete, even on easy mode. This game, as many people NEED to know, are challenging enough for a good challenge. As you progress throughout the game, te puzzle game becomes harder and harder because it's going more faster and faster. I know this because I've been playing video games since June 2005. :)
It's been well over 15 years since I've last played this, and everything about skweel and stage six causes me great anxiety and anger leading me to believe I was stuck on that stage for awhile.

I saw this game advertised in a toys r us magazine as a kid. I thought it said “mean LEAN machine” and figured it involved sonic fighting against some sort of crazy machine. When I got to the store, I saw it actually said “bean”, but I guess some sort of anxiety kicked in because I felt like I still had to spend my birthday money on it. Boy was I pissed when I got it home and fully realized that it was just Tetris with beans lol.

I like how a Stage 3 and a Stage 6 enemy take longer to defeat than the actual final boss.
Stage 6 is HARD.
Final boss gets out of hand fast if you don't finish him quickly.
Even Stage 9 is HARD for me also, but I'm okay with Stage 4 because that's EASY.

I beat it on all 4 difficulties. It's not too hard as long as you set up combos properly.

While I absolutely love this game, I find it a little sad that Coconuts was put at Level 4 while Scratch and Grounder got 12 and 8 respectively. Coconuts has always been the smartest of the three in the cartoon, and he deserves to be placed in Level 12 but with Scratch's AI. 😔
Likewise, Grounder should've been at Level 4 with Coconuts's AI, and Scratch at 8 with Grounder's AI.
Besides, wouldn't it make more sense for Robotnik to resort to Coconuts at the very end? Coconuts was always the one getting left out in the show.
Robotnik probably considered Coconut lesser than his other creations just because he’s an older model than Scratch or Grounder. So he sent his weaker robots out first and saved what he considers his big guns for the later rounds.
I have a soft spot for Coconuts too, so I get what you are saying.

I especially love the cast in this game. Aside from Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts, the robots in this game should've returned in newer Sonic games as Dr. Eggman's team of Badniks against Sonic and his friends. They could've piloted Eggman's giant robots for him thereby saving him the trouble. ;)
But, that's just wishful thinking on MY part, though. ^^

My friend and I used to play this game for hours and hours against each other. It became quite an addiction after a while. My friend got particularly good at it beating the game on Hardest without dying like it was no big deal. He'd get up to level 99 on exercise mode and just keep going. Getting like 12 Yippies in a row at times. It was insane.
Man, its good to see someone else w the same addiction as me. I also finished hardest mode without losing and got to 99 and kept going. lol. I miss this game

I used to rage so hard on this because of how difficult it is to compete, even on easy mode. This game, as many people NEED to know, are challenging enough for a good challenge. As you progress throughout the game, te puzzle game becomes harder and harder because it's going more faster and faster. I know this because I've been playing video games since June 2005. :)

It's been well over 15 years since I've last played this, and everything about skweel and stage six causes me great anxiety and anger leading me to believe I was stuck on that stage for awhile.

I saw this game advertised in a toys r us magazine as a kid. I thought it said “mean LEAN machine” and figured it involved sonic fighting against some sort of crazy machine. When I got to the store, I saw it actually said “bean”, but I guess some sort of anxiety kicked in because I felt like I still had to spend my birthday money on it. Boy was I pissed when I got it home and fully realized that it was just Tetris with beans lol.
