    GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome! At some point we've all suffered from it. More times than not, the photography or videography gear you tell yourself you need isn't actually going to solve the problem you feel you have. In this video, I give my deeper thoughts on this topic and the process I use before buying any new camera gear.

    It’s an opinion many need to hear. Some people will go swipe that CC and not even think about the actual cost of the item over time. Always live within your means and truly understand the gear that you have before buying another piece. Happy Holidays everyone. Always a pleasure hear your thought Anthony.

      Ever since YT got VERY gear centric, I've been preaching to anyone who will listen to have an understanding of why they think they need new gear and how it will solve their problem. Too often people assume (because of what they hear) that a new camera or lens or piece of gear is going to have this big impact on what they create, and it usually doesn't. That's really why I even talk about this; I don't want people having that feeling I had a decade ago, confused on why this new camera didn't make my images 10x better. Happy holidays to you as well my friend!

    Very well said. But from time to time, it's cool to buy something we desire :)

    Does buying/reviewing that new gear improve any aspect of my photography… Nope. But buying and receiving that new gear keeps me from looking at photography/videography as just a job and keeps me more engaged. Learning the ins and outs of that new gear makes it more like a hobby, from my perspective, while somehow allowing me to feel mentally refreshed 😅. I’ve always said that if you aspire to be a better photographer, it doesn’t start with the gear. Be willing to invest in yourself with knowledge, and experience. Whether it be self taught or by attending courses much like your upcoming class at Imaging USA 👍🏽, taking that time to learn different aspects of the craft is essential to one’s development.

      Big facts bro! I'll be saying it until I'm blue in the face, do everything with intention! When you understand the what, why, and how, THAT is when you truly grow, as a photographer, as a videographer, as a content creator. This isn't a space for auto-pilot!

    Ohhh it gets much worse than that! So you are shooting events with your f4 lens and shooting higher ISO's than you'd like. You could solve that problem buying an expensive f1.2 lens. So now you have your f1.2 and your images look clean but you look at your images closer and find all your group shots only have a couple people in acceptable focus! So you solve one problem only to discover you created another because you forgot f1.2 depth of field is giving you focus issues now. So guess what you do, you stop your f1.2 lens down to f4 LMAO. You are right back where you started 😂 Identifying the correct solution before buying is more important. The answer here should have been to add light by means of flashes or continuous light NOT buying another lens! Everything in photography becomes a compromise, what you take from one aspect you have to balance it with another. Totally with you however on having a check list, what will this new purchase solve, but have a second list ..what issues might this new purchase create? 😉

      Informed is the key, sadly a lot of creators in this space will push gear, gear, gear because it brings views, and of course people love random folks they don’t know validating their buying decisions 😂

    Some ppl go full frame because they want that elusive 1/8000 shutter speed that most APSC options just dont give.
    However... They forget that M4/3 can also do 1/8000 and even 1/32000 in some cases... Food for thought.
    Hell going m4/3 over FF will actually leave you with money left over for food!! 😅

    • @AnthonyToglife
      @AnthonyToglife  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I’ve never heard that reasoning for going FF, that’s a new one for me, lol. People will come up with anything to justify their reasoning. I’ve been considering tapping into Fuji for quite some time, just haven’t because a need hasn’t existed and a desire hasn’t been strong enough 😂

      @@AnthonyToglife mega high shutter speeds are the only way to make those novelty f0.95 lenses usable in daylight without an ND... I can't really think of any other reason that I would need 1/32000 other than it exists 😅

      @@SystemParanoia makes me think of all the people praising the 1/80000ss of the Sony A9III, yeah it’s cool but 99% of photographers have never needed a SS that high and will continue to never need it, lol.

      All the promo and hype on that cameras specs, and nobody has taken a photo of a helicopter or old propeller plane with rotors spinning away to show off the global shutter and the mega shutter speed... However.. All the "influencers" have just taken the same photos that could have been taken on any camera from the past 100 years or so.

    When I went from a Canon 80D to the Sony a7R3, man what a difference, I was shooting beauty photos (with the same FF Sigma Art lenses) and suddenly it was so much easier to edit. My client was telling me when I delivered the first photos by the a7r3: What have you done? The quality is so much better. Now however, to upgrade to an a7r5, would I get the same comment? No, not at all. To get the same wow factor for photography, then I had to get to middle format, but its just to clunky for events, to expensive etc., so its not worth it. Maybe when the a7r6 comes out, then I will upgrade because of the video capabilities and not because of the photography.

    • @AnthonyToglife
      @AnthonyToglife  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You say the "quality is so much better", can you definitively explain what was better?

    Hi Anthony, from across the pond here in the UK, once again thank you for this inciteful and informative video. Asking the 3 questions rule is so helpful; what is the initial problem, how is this purchase going to resolve this problem, what more will resolve, is there anything else it will resolve. I think you could also ask, "what potential issues might this new purchase introduce"? I feel this falls into the "gear does/doesn't matter".

    • @AnthonyToglife
      @AnthonyToglife  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Indeed on thinking about the potential issues. The reason I don't really mention that is because most of the time, one solution will create either a different issue or at a minimum make another aspect less than ideal. Rarely in this space can we have everything we want at the same time, at least not without utilizing a bunch of things all at once, lol. But I think even in what you're saying, it enforces the most important thing - giving it thought! If a person does that, they're already heading in the right direction.
