This is interesting. Very interesting. I play mostly classical and finger-style arrangements. I’ve memorized thousands of pieces. And gotten maddeningly frustrated trying to imbed them in what I call my PERMANENT memory bank or repertoire. No matter how much I can play a piece “in my sleep” so to speak, after a passage of time they inevitably FADE! ARRRRRRRRRRGGGHHHH! That’s not my goal. I want my permanent repertoire to be EXACTLY that. PERMANENT!!
It seems if I play certain pieces every single day of my life, they stay sharp. But when (due to time restrictions) I have to put them on the back shelf so I can learn NEW pieces, then I end up sacrificing the older pieces for the newer ones!!
I truly think over the years I’ve forgotten a lot more than I’ve learned.

    Losing your skills!!
    1) get a kitchen timer ⏲
    2)!get a metronome
    3) schedule time to work and practice
    4) record yourself for a recording of what you sound like now.
    5) After practicing daily for 2.5 hours per day for a month or two listen to yourself on your old recording.
    6) you sound fantastic now don’t you?

I understand that. However, I use my alarm clock to get up well before kids.
I use headphones 🎧 and get quality practice time. I also have a car guitar that I practice with at lunch break.
If you really want to get good musicianship then stop making excuses and start making progress.

Do you have a degree in Brain Mechanics? Hehe. You really have this down.. I've been doing this for years. seems instinctive.. but what You have helped me with is teaching me it's okay to mess up. No reason for me to get discouraged, I just push thru it. Also found that running a drum track in the background (like with Addictive Drums 2) I can force myself to always stay with the beat. (a bit more fun than a metronome.. hehe)

Some tricks from "neuropsychological learning techniques":
    1. Get your daily rehearsal sessions as concretly structured as possible. Design a detailed daily learning schedule plan or list for your daily rearsal sessions, where every exercise has its concrete place in time. This is your learning program! Follow your plan or list! Chaos kills the learning effect!! You can plan-in certain times, where you leave your program for a while to play freely what you want! It is necessary, to give your brain moments of "musical freedom" and pure creativity without strict routines! But keep this times strictly seperate from your schedule!
    2. Get yourself mental or/and defined "anchor harmonies", to which you play certain licks that you want to learn. Always play only one defined lick to each set of connected harmonies! - Try to connect the lick or melody line to a certain thought or emotion - this helps to reimagine it! - The more defined and concrete the thought or emotion is, the better it works!
    3. Record all your rehearsal sessions from the moment you start to the moment you stop. Erase the recordings only, when all the stuff, that you rehearsed in them is perfectly embedded into your long-time memory system.
    4. Try to find musical examples, where your lick ( or a similar lick) is used by other musicians and keep them in memory. Listen to them, when you can' t remember the certain connected lick or line.
    5. Never try to learn very similar material in the same rehearsal session. Similar material may overlap in your memory or cause a mess of memory lines.
    6. Try to repeat the lick or line as often as it is possible in each rehearsal session, for example at the beginning, then half the way and at last at the end of your session. The more you repeat, the better it is anchored in your mind.
    7. Once the lick has become part of your long time memory, set yourself certain "repeat days" in your rehearsal time schedule to keep the memory alive. Imagine a "picture" of how you play the lick in your mind and repeat it from time to time when you are not rehearsing.
This technic is proved by learning psychology and usually works well! - Good luck!
Greets from germany! - Keep rockin'!

So glad your brought this topic up...👍
Over the years I've learned over a thousand rock songs....To play them all now would be impossible without having to relearn them. Our brain is like a library, we collect all these ideas and thoughts and store them until needed.
The vicious cycle never stops! As we learn something new every day in our musical endeavors!
    My motto is
    Rock til you Drop 😅
BTW, I'm 72 now and still Rocking!

i believe this is called "recall" with memory, where you force your mind to remember something by searching for it in your conscious mind. the more you do this, the more the brain puts it in unconscious memory.

    Thanks for your lessons!
I'm playing the guitar already for 5 month almost every day 1-3 hours a day. I have a problem with my right hand. I still can't find the way to hold the pick, position, style. I take one style, practice it... it gets better but after few weeks it starts working worse and worse. Up to the point when I start dropping my pick all the time and can't play almost anything. After fighting with this pick grip style without success I try another pick grip and everything repeat: works well at the beginning, progressing but after some time degradation.
What I need to do to overcome this problem?
Keep practicing more or have a rest for a week of month?
Will be very thankful for your advice!

When I'm doing well , I take 2 things, stick them back to back, then play them round and round....A,B,A,B,A,B,A....
I get the feeling that I'm developing better...
Plus the harmonic relationship between the two keeps things interesting.
Sometimes I'll line up three things, to create a little suite, if you will.
Each part remains the same, A,B,C,A,B,C...round and round
then I allow a flash moment of improve, which changes one of the parts slightly, then it has 2 forms, so I try to hit them alternatively each time that part comes around.
Some of the time I concentrate mostly on executing the physical playing of the suite, then I'll relax my focus into actually listening to the sounds of it.
Even with all of this, the skills/memory loss from one day to the next is a huge problem.
I guess what I've been doing is Maxing out my short term memory, and neglecting the long term.
    Thanks Klaus !

Claus´ da Internet Guitar Teacher. Improved a lot since I started watching his videos and practising the exercises. I wish I could buy the whole Ingenium course but I´m underemployed and just barely making ends meet. That´s why I squeeze every detail from his TH-cam videos and leave a nice comment thanking him for these wonderful and consistent uploads. Keep them coming!!!!
p.s: I f´ed up my left shoulder because of so much time invested in the guitar. Just a deep muscle spasm in the rotator cuff and longissimus dorsi muscles. My wartime wounds... haha.

One thing that helps me, is make it a priority to go through my main project everyday.
-Don’t get discouraged and give up if you miss a day; just don’t do it again.
-Make a time goal and stick with it; BUT… if you have no time that day and have to crawl out of bed just to practice for 5 mins on your main project. DO IT.
My Goal is 1 hour but if I can only squeeze in 10 mins and that’s it… I’ll do that.
I used to miss days and weeks because I was too focused on my 1 hour goal when life happened and missing days of practice is worse than missing your practice time goal.

@@inflexion7798 I worked a lot over "shapes" (07 shapes of the major scale), but without learning the degrees of each note regarding the tonality and over the chord been played.
Another mistake was to practice only the key of C major. It caused me to get completely lost when trying other keys, because I was looking for the "white dots" on the fretboard to place the shapes.
I used to NOT listen to the harmony while I was soloing, tossing random notes from the scale over any chord.
      Just to name some...

It is more important to know why you're doing what you're doing than just doing it, in my opinion. It gives us some context of the *why* so we can better understand *how* to apply it.
