  • Ian Royle is helping Jeremy Thomas find a new car, who is looking for a 4x4 and has around £10k to spend. He test drives the Nissan Terrano to see if this is the off-roader he's looking for, and Chris Hopkins has more in-depth information on the car.

I remember when had one on the farm couple years back all the land rovers were getting stuck and the terrain just went through it like nothing so they obviously haven’t taken one of these off road

i have a terrano myself and it is the best offroder i have ever expierienced im from iceland and when it snows it snows hard
and my terrano has never failed me so him saying that it is not a good offroder just means that he just is not good at offroding

Can't be 1994 -the turbo diesel with intercooler was for the 1997-8 models. It gave the bullet proof TD27 motor (along with revised ECU) another 25hp. Make no mistake -this is a genuine 4wd with Hi/Lo ratio selection and 4wd/2wd selection. Even the 3 door version is rated to tow 2800 kg, with a solid steel chassis. The earlier non intercooler versions of this motor were found in London "Fairway Driver" taxis, that had no problem running 16 hours a day and clocking up 400,000 miles (well continuous running is better for a diesel than stop start all day to be fair.) .

No intercooler and power only 100hp
Next generation got intercooler electronics and 125hp

i had the 1996 the same color interior and rims like this in the review but the 2.4 petrol witch for me it was pretty weak engine in open roads. But put it in low range and this car can go almost everywhere and i think it has one off the best climbing skills from any other 4x4 form those days........

Yeah, total nonsense, the Terrano does well off road.

"well behind the class leaders on the rough terrain". You obviously haven't driven a Terrano off road. You're talking from your arse. They'll go anywhere a Land Rover will go, but there won't an oil slick left behind in the mud 🙄🙄🤣🤣

Silly Poms with their oil leaking Land Rover tortoises breaking down all the time, well behind any Japanese 4WD at the top of the class.
