  • In this edition of BIH we bring to you the story of the destruction of an oil-bearing community in Bayelsa State of Nigeria in November 1999 by the Armed Forces of Nigeria under the command of President Olusegun Obasanjo then president and commander in chief of the armed forced of Nigeria. It was one of the darkest moments in the history of Nigeria. Houses were destroyed by soldiers. Humans were killed in their numbers. Children were caught in the crossfire and the community was left with scars that will be difficult to heal in many years.

This video only pick a part of the story that seems to go in its line. I was rounding off secondary school at this time. I wasn't privy to the event but I learnt of some other versions of the event
    1. Some soldiers were killed in Odi. Not only were they killed, they were hung on a tree. That's treason to a Nation. Don't forget Obasanjo was a military general. How do you think he will take this?
    2. There were reports of the community collaborating with the militants.
    3. Before the invasion, the military notified the community. This video also says that but the community believed in the militants withstanding the Nigeria Army. They've been pre-warned to vacate the community.
    4. This video also says the state governor calls for federal intervention that the situation is beyond his control.
Before you crucify Obasanjo, get into Obasanjo's shoe at the time and know what he's facing. It is true that civilised society, example USA, may not handle the situation like this but have you ever heard of a civilised society killing its Army, hanging their bodies and engaging them in gunbattle. If you act like in the jungle, expect a jungle treatment.

It's unfortunately for Obasanjo to take such decision during his regime which is not right for a head of state to take such decision if he really humidity, it's the same think also happen in my country Sudan during Omar Al Bashir regime alot of people were kill in Darfur region where I came from half of million people lost there life because of such leaders which we have today in Africa, May there souls continue to rest in peace.

Why is the Nigerian army so big with generals from almost two regions that also dominate presidency of the country? In my view as an outsider, the Nigerian government and Olusegun Obasanjo should be sued at ICC to be held accountable for its atrocities in the Odi town, Bayelsa. A Nigerian friend from Benin City told me Obasanjo practiced wizardry. Should we say he was sacrificing the citizen of Odi? Imagine the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the Republic of Nigeria unleashing well armed soldiers to destroy a little town instead of letting the police arrest and prosecute criminals! If that is not terroristic witchcraft , what is it?
