  • Shetland, the the northernmost part of Scotland and of the wider United Kingdom. We travelled there by MV Hrossey the NorthLink ferry departing from Aberdeen. It took us approximately 14 long hours to get there due to the sea conditions. It was rough, but a unique experience nonetheless. Join me in my travels around these amazing islands discovering astonishing landscapes, amazing wildlife and incredible relics of the past.

On ships/airplanes: aft = rear, fore = forward, starboard = right, port = left (based on forward direction of travel) The latter two are sometimes used with the word abeam, meaning at approximately 90 degrees to the center line of the ship.

It's a (mostly) enjoyable trip, to a fantastic destination. But, just be aware, if the sea is rough, that 12 hour journey can be brutal. Personally, I would invest in anti-nausea tablets, if you don't have sea-legs, and especially if you opt for the 'Sleeping Pod' option, which is a halfway house between a basic seat in the main lounge, and a cabin. They are right at the 'Pointy end' of the ferry, and you will experience the full range of the ship's motion in a heavy sea!
