yep. 1 point in grim ward is amazing too, breaks physical immunity. I also like 1 point in frenzy, even though it takes a total of 3 points to get there on the tree. A few hits with frenzy, and you can WW at super speed, and it's nice in some situations. The best thing about WW barb is, you have so many skill points to work with. No synergy for WW = no need to focus all points into 1 attack to be as powerful as possible. So I love using taunt, war cry, howl, grim ward, find item, sometimes even find potion... leap attack before I got enigma. WW barb has always been my favorite class. I'll start a sorc to farm items, then as soon as I can afford 1 grief, I move permanently to the barb. He's tough, does awesome AOE and single target damage, gets 50% chance of 2x drops from bosses with find item... best class no contest.
@@junkequation You can also choose to not put any points into the Frenzy synergies either... hardly makes a difference once you have some gear on you (no more then 12-15% damage difference due to the way damage calculations are done). Just go full Frenzy, Battle Order and Weapon Mastery and then go YOLO with your points.
We were building out a Trav barb on a stream and had a pool of gear to work with and found the WW variant to be a lot smoother than the Zerking variant. it may well have come down to all the +damage coming from dual Grief, LOH and COH, but with a dual leech ring the barb wasn't even loosing HP to the trav members. Trang's belt came in clutch for us, as we didnt have a Cham on hand. The lack of synergies on WW means we could build out WW, BO, SM and FPotion with enough points for 10 Find item by the low 80s. Being able to leech means you don't have to live on the edge of your HP pool like you do on Zerk. I very well might take my NL barb over to WW from Zerk as its way more chill and just as fast. I haven't run it through the gearing phase but other than the Armor, IK is plentiful and a pretty solid option for defensive stats. the only place the barb might struggle is Trav early on as damage needs to be high enough to overcome the healing, but elsewhere in the game its probably more than viable. If we were to see some bumps to the Barb leveling process come out in 2.6 I could see Barb having a very solid progression path for a season, and may become a contender for ladder starter; though the CTH formula may hold it back regardless.
I have every Barb build. Its my main class online and offline. WW is the best to me. The perfect balance between speed, bossing, mobbing, and horking. The point distribution of WW is the best in the class. Though after the update to Throw barbs, they are really fun to play now as well.

I played a fair bit of D2 as a kid and loved the WW Barb around patch 1.08, so it was the first build I created in D2R. Having access to TH-cam made it a lot easier to do right! I use the IK set and it's a great build. Not the biggest damage dealer, but can clear anything thanks to the multiple damage types and huge physical damage, and incredibly tanky and safe with resistances that are easy to cap, giant defense and BO providing a massive buff. My top tip is to shop for +3 warcries spears from Malah and Anya in Act 5 - far cheaper than the dual HOTO if you don't plan on teleporting, and also provide a big buff to your horking.
Thinking about going for a WW barb come next weason. IK seems like a rather decent and very cheap option... You do need a HUGE investment on Strength due to the Maul with a 225 Str requirement, but the whole set combined seems quite good for the price it costs (less then an Ist rune for the 6-piece with good rolls).
Yep, I agree. There is at least one chunky Strength bonus on the gear so you don't have to waste too many points. And with Battle Orders, Vitality points stretch further and, let's face it, you're not going to invest in Energy on the Barb 😁. I also chose to pump attack rating from charms rather than Dex (there's no Dex requirement on the weapon) to save points, and you could even go with a Blessed Aim merc if it's a problem and you don't mind sacrificing a bit of damage. Crushing Blow is doing half the work as far as damage goes anyway.
@@greggen63 Instead of going for the usual Act 2 Might merc (or Blessed Aim for more AR) you could also pick an Act 1 Merc for the Inner Sight debuff she throws around that greatly reduces enemy Defense. Checked on Traderie and getting the whole set with max rolls on the Helmet and Weapon still costs about 8 Perfect Amethysts only :P A much-needed decently rolled Raven Frost costs about a Mal or Ist rune with the Angelic Set only costing about a Lem/Pul... which still keeps this complete build in the "Incredibly Cheap for it's power" category.

The only thing thats actually a bit annoying is that you can't simply keep spinning as long as you have mana, these little breaks kinda kill the vibe a bit. was it like this in the original game? i honestly can't remember even though i played ONLY ww barbs back in the day (around 2000/2001)
the percent you see on your character screen is always the percent without taking into account negative effects on them :( - battle cry helps out a ton, personally I prefer the act 1 mercenary since it has a lot bigger radius (battle cry requires getting right up on them - which pretty much I only tend to use on bosses or tougher uniques when doing SSF)
It was popular before the runeword expansions in 1.10 and the difficulty adjustments (I was more a doombringer person myself), but sadly with the increased durability of enemies and better runewords, they became underwhelming for their rarity.
I levelled a Frenzy Barb and managed OK on self-found gear. Farm until you get two matching weapon types (sceptres, swords or whatever) that compliment each other and max the mastery. I didn't hit many bumps until early Hell difficulty, which I always find a huge step for any character.
I need a little help understanding something! This used to be so easy. Back in the old days 38ias on a CB gave you 4 frames. For the love of all things holy can someone please explain how you can get back to 4 frames?? I used a player planner and with 60ias on BOTD and 20IAS on Highlords it’s still showing 5 frames. So I socketed a 15IAS jewel in the helm and still 5 frames Can you not 4 frame WW with a Colossus Blade anymore?
Only thing I can think of is to use a hustle until you get the burst of speed charge (lasts 3 minutes) and then swap back to your other weapon/weapons.
Why whirlwind cannot proc anything on hit/striking/after kill? It is so weird, was weird in vanilla and still is. I think it should be change and allow Barbarians to proc various effect with WW. Maybe cut the chance in half for dual wielding but keep chance unchanged for 2h weapons? Imagine wielding two schaefer's hammers and having (even with 50% penalty) 2x10% ctc static field on striking! :D Wouldn't that be great!? Players could finally try some other unique weapons instead of going dual grief as always ...
1 pt frenzy and getting that max attack speed and then spamming 1 pt berserk is all you need to kill bosses. Put the rest in WW and cries. On switch have dual lacerates and spam 1 pt double throw on bosses to get the amp procced. Get yourself a grief/death act 5 Merc and all of your problems solved. That's the best barb you will ever get which will still lose to a naked soso, a din, a Necro or a Sin in the speed game. Oh and don't forget to carry a demon limb in cube with you. Gonna need that 15k+ AR to get this thing going
Or a barb with NW + Voice of Reason + Rift. Frozen, orbs everywhere. Possibly even just using Atma's as the ammy to proc amp dmg more reliably. Stormlash/Lightsabre/Crescent Moon to proc static.
@@gstvntt Nightwings, it's a helm that adds Cold damage %, I think it was 5-15% and with the facet it could be 20% with -5%cold resistances. Rift's Frozen orb is lvl 21, roughly 276-281 per shard, add 20% it would be like 331-337 (Lets just avg that dmg out to 334) BUT... Enemies have resistances, lets take cows for example, they have 50% cold resistances, when you apply the -resistance% from NW/VoR (-29%). Cows now take 79% of your cold dmg, so (0.79 x 334) = 263.86 per shard. But that doesn't always proc the Rift's Frozen Orb, it does Proc Voice of Reason's Frozen orb as well. So take it as you will.

@@jameshaulenbeek5931 can't disagree with the power of conc. But unless you're running with a team single targets only can get overwhelming really quickly when you're trying to deal with ranged buttheads cursing you before your leap attack even lands. It's just tough to get behind single target martial characters. I'm sure you are kinda designed to use multiple skills across multiple trees to be able to run the game solo with any character. Then again, with runes that are nearly impossible to farm solo offline, the power ramp and demand to fine tune a character to within an inch of it's life just makes the barb a tough sell for me these days. Offline certainly, but not for ladder.
can someone explain to me why people would chose build like this over hammerdin? It's more expensive, less mf, no movement, mana issues if you don't have mana leech ring and doesn't kill bosses or mobs crazy fast. Any other purpose other than horker?
Because hammerdin is boring after awhile. Yeah it's strong but it's not that fun after awhile and it's unviable in PVP unless the hammerdin is a hybrid.
Then the ww-barbs you know are bad lol - a proper ww barb will be able to match a similarly geared throwbarb (though throwbarb won't have their kill speed slowed by dense crowds, while the WW build will due to how the targeting works)
@@Alzorath i talk about what i see on your video on player 1 .not about other barbs ( not saying you are bad , it just seems slow ).but yes i talk also about crowds. even trow barb aoe is weak compared to other classes imo
Apples to apples (ie both single player, not online) - they're around the same speed for completion of the test suite as I said. The reason this is important to point out is that enemy stats are different in SP vs Online, and both of those are different from enemy stats on Ladder (drop rates differ there too). And the "but X is faster in this very specific zone" is a reason why all builds get multiple runs through the test suite before a video is made (I admittedly only time them now, just recording one run, to save HDD space - I used to record them all)

I'm thinking I should respec and 20/20 sword/axe until I can get a gg zerker grief. (20/20 masteries, 20 ww / 20 bo > rest in shout).
This is tough. I've dueled using both and I still think 1grief/1zerker is better in that case too. I'm thinking the AR bonus and (possibly)speed could be a result?
By all means please do pick at this with your opinion. I understand for PvP ill need dual zerker, but whether they be x2 grief or x1 grief/x1 beast I'm not entirely sure but it does feel that grief/beast is better. Even with my skill tree crutched.
Leap Attack, the Barbarian tele lol
The only thing thats actually a bit annoying is that you can't simply keep spinning as long as you have mana, these little breaks kinda kill the vibe a bit.
was it like this in the original game? i honestly can't remember even though i played ONLY ww barbs back in the day (around 2000/2001)
it's always been that way to an extent, though the mechanics of ww have changed over time, which have changed weapon choices and strategies with it
I tried using battlecry on bosses to increase the chance to hit but the percentage stays the same 😐 I'm too poor for infinity lol..
the percent you see on your character screen is always the percent without taking into account negative effects on them :( - battle cry helps out a ton, personally I prefer the act 1 mercenary since it has a lot bigger radius (battle cry requires getting right up on them - which pretty much I only tend to use on bosses or tougher uniques when doing SSF)
how about dual Unbending Will on colosus is good choice?
I have question what is your opinion about using dual grand fathers swords? Please help out!!
It was popular before the runeword expansions in 1.10 and the difficulty adjustments (I was more a doombringer person myself), but sadly with the increased durability of enemies and better runewords, they became underwhelming for their rarity.
One thing that bothers me is the lack of synergies for the Barb. Couldn’t get mine past NM Act I.
the answer is warcry
I levelled a Frenzy Barb and managed OK on self-found gear. Farm until you get two matching weapon types (sceptres, swords or whatever) that compliment each other and max the mastery. I didn't hit many bumps until early Hell difficulty, which I always find a huge step for any character.
how different if WW barb with off hand shield?
I want to make one using IK set with highlords.ravefrost,bk ring…Jo think I’m going to try on ladder3 start….😁
So I socketed a 15IAS jewel in the helm and still 5 frames
Can you not 4 frame WW with a Colossus Blade anymore?
Only thing I can think of is to use a hustle until you get the burst of speed charge (lasts 3 minutes) and then swap back to your other weapon/weapons.
anyone know why i never get the top right pop-ups? Don't get em on PC or Android
My favorite character ❤
Why whirlwind cannot proc anything on hit/striking/after kill? It is so weird, was weird in vanilla and still is. I think it should be change and allow Barbarians to proc various effect with WW. Maybe cut the chance in half for dual wielding but keep chance unchanged for 2h weapons? Imagine wielding two schaefer's hammers and having (even with 50% penalty) 2x10% ctc static field on striking! :D Wouldn't that be great!? Players could finally try some other unique weapons instead of going dual grief as always ...
Goldfind barb, all the way. =)
I prefer melee characters in general. It sucks that they're not as good as casters.
Chaos sin, is how I play my barb lol,
why no frenzy?
only 3 points and it actually makes it fun to play :P
im using 2 pb griefs for pvm and 2 grief CBs for pvp :P
D2 did the arpg mmo genre right
1 pt frenzy and getting that max attack speed and then spamming 1 pt berserk is all you need to kill bosses.
I just use leap not leap attack . You dont want to jump on one of those little icy b~~~~~~~rds
I use a chamed gface
2 wizard spikes are better than hotos.
Too bad you can't proc on strike skills, imagine a reapers toll ww baba
Or a barb with NW + Voice of Reason + Rift. Frozen, orbs everywhere. Possibly even just using Atma's as the ammy to proc amp dmg more reliably. Stormlash/Lightsabre/Crescent Moon to proc static.
@@Algonqiun sorry, what's NW?
@@gstvntt Nightwings, it's a helm that adds Cold damage %, I think it was 5-15% and with the facet it could be 20% with -5%cold resistances.
Rift's Frozen orb is lvl 21, roughly 276-281 per shard, add 20% it would be like 331-337
(Lets just avg that dmg out to 334)
BUT...
Favorite...Barb...build? These words have no meaning to me. You mean there's more to the barbarian than being my beast of burden? Don't you dare tell my stable of mules that they could have been something! They'll get thoughts...
The Conc barb is my favorite. Absolute beast against single targets.
@@itsmikehayden Find item is maybe the only reason to play a Barb, because compared to other he is quite weak.
@@biohead66 I agree. I did make a horker but that grind was a bit mind numbing
@@itsmikehayden It really is , especially Travincal is complete zombie mode.
can someone explain to me why people would chose build like this over hammerdin? It's more expensive, less mf, no movement, mana issues if you don't have mana leech ring and doesn't kill bosses or mobs crazy fast. Any other purpose other than horker?
Because hammerdin is boring after awhile. Yeah it's strong but it's not that fun after awhile and it's unviable in PVP unless the hammerdin is a hybrid.
killing speed is horrible......a throw barb is better with right gear.tbh i clear on player 4 plus faster than ww on player 1.
And the "but X is faster in this very specific zone" is a reason why all builds get multiple runs through the test suite before a video is made (I admittedly only time them now, just recording one run, to save HDD space - I used to record them all)
its overrated not under, every1 build it since first d2, lame build
actually, the pvm meta hasn't paid attention to the whirlwind barbarian since 1.10 sadly - the berserker always gets more love due to boss popping.
