I always love the shrimpy videos. Probably my favorite in the hobby right now for sure.

We got our first dozen in last week. Drip acclimated and they are all still alive! Got some red cherries. I’m starting to be able to tell the difference between the males and females but I’m not entirely sure when I look at one. We don’t have any fish but we have them in with our mystery snails. (Just got our first clutch two days ago 🤞)I worry about lowering the pH too much with my mysteries in there. It’s 7.3-7.4 right now. I’m in the process of setting up a 20 gallon long just for shrimp! That would be my next question. Setting up the ideal tank for these guys. They’re so much fun to watch!
You're very welcome. Females are a bit larger and if you see a white patch on their back called "saddled" that's a solid giveaway. Those are unfertilized eggs.
You're PH is fine. Your general hardness is what controls their molting. Anything below a 6 and their exoskeleton will be too malleable, and anything above 10 will cause their exoskeleton to be too ridged; both will cause a failed molt which leads to death.
I wouldn't worry too much about your snails. They aren't going anywhere. Lol
What you get to work in your current tank, will most certainly work in a 20 gallon. They love hiding places. Cholla wood is great for that. Lots of plants 🤙
Cherries are a great color. Have fun making hundreds of them. 😁

I enjoy your shrimp videos even though I never considered having any. Now I'm considering starting a smaller planted tank just for shrimp after seeing your videos. After having fish in one of my tanks for over a month, I saw something red in the substrate, I now have 2 small shrimp in there but I'm not sure where they came from. They seem to be doing pretty well and are actively feeding.
Focus on General hardness. If you can keep between 6-10. You'll be headed in right direction for freshwater shrimp. More that likely, you caught a couple stowaways on a plant.
Got the Tank, the lid from your link and the light from your link looking at substrate and want to put mystery snails in too so want something inert. I found Carib sea eco complete. Thoughts? Thanks for helping me build my tank :)
I'm going to send you 2 different links for my favorite inert substrates that do well with plants an will accumulate lots of bio film for your snails to feast on.

By far my 2 favorite inert substrates are definitely eco complete and Seachem Florite
I wanted to give you a little helpful hint with both those substrates. They're easier to plant into if you mix a little black diamond blasting sand. Also inert.
Have you ever had planaria in your shrimp tank? I have them and they murder the shrimp when they are molting 😡
No I haven't. The worst pest I've ever had to deal with was anchor worms. I'm sorry to hear this.

@@yourtap I use a planaria trap to keep numbers down, I’m guess that the Cory catfish eat some of them. There are medications that work, but I don’t want to hurt the nerites. I tend to overfeed to keep the Algae eaters from destroying the few stem plants in the tank, so that doesn’t help.
