  • GETPIVOTDATA is the ‘Marmite’ of Excel functions: some people love it, some people hate it. Most people don’t understand how it works and why it is so useful.
GETPIVOTDATA is a setting that is turned on by default. When we try to link to a cell in a Pivot Table, the GETPIVOTDATA formula is automatically used.
GETPIVOTDATA is similar to linking to a cell except that the data we are linking to is in a Pivot Table and that Pivot Table has the potential to change layout. GETPIVOTDATA allows us to create a robust formula, that works even when Pivot Table fields are moved around.
In this video, we will take a detailed look at GETPIVOTDATA, run through an example of its use and discuss its advantages and disadvantages.

This is wonderful. I have to edit my report every month because of the pivot table change; no more of that anymore! I'll be using this technique. Thank you.

Very clear video. When I use =getpivotdata( to refer to the target cell in a pivot table which is on another sheet of the same excel file. However it only shows the first two syntax i.e., field and pivot table. There are no subsequent [field1, item1], [field2, item2] for me to work with. How to understand this? thanks.

thanks for this video, it works with a simple Pivot Table, however, it doesn't work with the data model based pivot tables. Do you have any idea how to apply same logic to this kind of pivot tables ?
    thanks again !

Great vid! But still wondering what's use case for GETPIVOTDATA? Since i can just create another pivot table or calculated field.

hi. The use case is demonstrated in the video. If you rearrange pivot fields the formulas break. GETPIVOTDATA prevents that.
