    I am 46 years old and I have always loved people's flowers. However, I have always had more of a poison thumb than a brown one so green was impossible. Last year I said you know I am getting older let's try one more time. So I turned to the internet something that wasn't there when I was younger. I found you and started to learn about plants. Last summer some actually lived. This year I went nuts. I am in love with plants. I go out every day multiple times like they are a toddler just making sure they are still ok. Thank you, because of you , I have found I really really love plants. Who knew I could do it.

      Hi Katiasia, I"m excited for you! I've been gardening for 38 years and it's the one thing in my life I've never gotten bored with or tired of. I'm 65 have small gardens, and about 50 something potted plants. You're love of gardening will carry you for years and you will always be learning new things. You found the best teacher for sure! Enjoy !

      I just pick out a few of the plants she uses and try them ...I got $1 - $4 plants at my nursery at the end of the season ...it was my first ever pot like Laura's...and they are still looking great several months later. I take ideas off Laura but adapt to my budget lol I buy the plants as babies too and let them grow up 😁

    I’d love to see an experiment with fertilizer. Like 2 of the same pots, one that gets weekly fertilizer and one that doesn’t. I’d love to see exactly how much of an impact it makes!

    • @EmmiLa
      @EmmiLa 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this would be so interesting! Maybe even do three pots, one with only slow-release fertilizer and one with only liquid. I definitely think the fertilizer helps, I've noticed the difference myself when I've forgot to fertilize something, but have never done a side by side comparison with the exact same plants.

    • @langell77
      @langell77 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      She did mention in her weekly recap video last week that they may do this. Another viewer had asked the same.

    • @iartistdotme
      @iartistdotme 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I can tell you that my garden never got much fertilizer and would've been an excellent 'no fertilizer' example. It was always sparse, pitiful, weedy and lots more work. I followed her directions for fertilizing and it is full, gorgeous, tons of butterflies and way fewer weeds since the plants cover the bare soil/mulch. I'll always fertilize once a week and occasionally skip a week from now on. It definitely shows when I skip to 3 weeks. It is so boring and a waste of pretty new plant money, BUT so worth it.

    Kitasia, I am 71 and have never been a gardner. I found her a month or so ago and have been so inspired by her videos. I went out this week and bought many plants- had to get deer resistant because they eat a lot of my plants. Anyway, she has inspired me to be better at gardening. I am excited to see if, doing the the right things such as fertilizing etc, my plants will do better. I have done the same as you-going out and checking them to see if they are still doing well. So glad I found her channel and her knowledge.

    It's so nice Laura to hear you say that not all plants perform the way you expect. As a beginner it gives me inspiration to try new plants and it's ok if they fail, just try again in another format. Thank you Laura

      @klattin1501 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cold frame is such a beautiful backdrop. So these haven't been over wintered or grown herself from seed?? What then is the purpose of a greenhouse?? Laura, if indeed these are what you've overwintered and now planting, please do give a tour. But if you're just picking them up from the nursery, don't.

    In the past I would plant my patio flower pots and by mid July they looked horrible, by August they were dead and I was throwing them away. Then I found Laura! When she put in her drip system I asked for the proven winners kit for my birthday. I also started fertilizing on a regular basis! I have now added five hanging baskets along my Fenceline that are all hooked on the drip system. I’ve learned so much and have enjoyed watching Laura and her beautiful family the best for years! I love the plants you planted today! I wish our local garden shops carried proven winners brand and the beautiful variety you have to choose from!☺️

    Laura, I've learned so much from you about drip irrigation--thank you! Recently my neighbor clued me into a game-changing, finger-saving tip. I've started using hot, almost boiling water to soften the tubing when making the connections. It works especially well when using 1/4-inch tubing and those tiny couplers. Using a small thermos will keep it hot for quite a while. Thanks for all you do to spread the gardening fever!

    Laura, I am in Central Florida.I use red and white Pentas in our flower beds in full sun and dappled shade, petite and tall species. We have combined them with blue daze, agapanthus, and other blue and deep purple verbenas, red and white verbenas. One planting has a young, prolific tibochina (sp?). I have also used Pentas in the window boxes. They never fail. By the way, my go to spiller in the boxes are chartreuse potato vine, for a dramatic green seen from the driveway. I am beginning to use more corals with whites and blue. We have blue sky vine, which is a strong climber. It’s beautiful, but can cover the beds and trees if not occasionally trimmed.

    An unsolicited "plug" here for Proven Winner's Water Wise drip system! Saw it first here on Garden Answer. Have it in use in two locations on our property. One waters multiple pots of different sizes on steps at our back door (the "primary" entrance at our home!), but the REALLY helpful set-up is in a large collection of bonsai which vary greatly in size and shape. With Deep South summers, this has been a HUGE blessing as when we are way and temps are over 100, but also a great relief time wise for us when home. It was tedious to set up on the bonsai because there are so many plants, but once done, it has been great. Love your pretty combos, Laura...NOW..if I could just find a good collection of PW plants for sale somewhere near where I live it would be great!

    I turned 54 today so my Wife and youngest Son took me to an Amish farm nursery about 45 mins from home and she was buying. I got a Snowball Viburnum tree form for only $30. Several other things but I was shocked to see that they sell several Proven Winners plants. I got 2 more hydrangeas so now I have 35 of them, 21 of which I got this spring. Can't get enough of them. You and Aaron have really inspired me this year, thank you.

    • @HappyCats17
      @HappyCats17 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I adore bacopa, but man is it a tricky one. I think it varies even just from plant to plant. One year, I had 8 hanging baskets of the purple ones, never got around to putting them where I wanted, so they just stayed on a sort of baker's rack type shelf I have on the north side of my potting area...they got NO SUN whatsoever except for about half an hour at the very end of the day, and they thrived. I couldn't even bring myself to move them, they were so perfect. Next year, did the same thing, they all started dying. Hung them in full sun on the other side of the potting area, south facing, full Arkansas sun all day long, they did great. Crazy plant.

    Pentas do well here in Texas. They are super heat and drought tolerant and come in many colors. I have even had them come back the next year when we don't have a very cold Winter. Tough, beautiful plant.

    I love absolutely love your garden and your ideas. Unfortunately I’m all the way in Trinidad in the Caribbean, so I can’t try all these beautiful combinations. I wish proven winners would ship internationally.

    Yes, cereal and Laura! Been watching 2 years now +watching older videos. I’m in SC from Ky and every time (almost daily) when u plant petunias-I must admit-I go oh no there she goes again, more petunias! As you have no luck with certain plants, I have never, ever had any luck with that plant! Just wondering, is it just me? Pentas, love, love them!

      David Hatfield have you tried the supertunias? I felt the same way and hadn’t planted any in years. Tried the dark red last year with good luck.

      They're harder to grow in our southern heat and humidity, but the Supertunias (especially the Vista series) do pretty good. They need consistent water. As in, same time of day, every day once the heat kicks in. Maybe even twice a day in the worst of the heat. Make sure you have them in a large enough container, too, and you will need to fertilize them regularly... once a week once they get going, and probably every single time you water once it starts getting really hot. Try and get a water soluble fertilize that has CHELATED iron. You will want to cut them back right around July 5th, cut them so they are about an inch below the bottom of the basket if they're in a hanging basket, or so they're about half way down the pot if they're in a pot on the ground/porch/deck.
      Again, I never had any luck til I tried the Supertunias, and especially the Vista series. (Bubblegum, Silverberry and Fuchsia do the best for me in Arkansas, Bubblegum being the very best)

    Pentas are tough and beautiful and grow well here in GA. I went to HD yesterday and all of the PW plants I wanted to get were gone. But I did pick up a Banana Cream Shasta daisy! Any tips on keeping it alive? I don’t have good luck with daisies for some reason. I always thought they’d be easy to grow. I need to see if I can find a video of you planting one.

    We’ve grown pentas in containers here in St. Louis for years and years. It’s possible they like our humidity. Not sure if it doesn’t like your dry desert conditions. They can get crowded out.

    Hi there. Love your videos. I live in a different planting zone than you, Zone 10 in Florida. So I enjoy you branching out to more full sun varieties. Yes Pentas work very well here in the south. Very drought tolerant and little to no maintenance. My house is west facing and I plant these in full sun, and they do very well. Mine were "accidentally" hacked with the weed eater to the base, and still came back beautiful and quickly.

    Pentas! I am in zone 8A and we grow Pentas every year and everywhere. They are not drought tolerant but very heat tolerant. They love the sun but like potato vines they are drama queens and love their water.

    Good morning, I'm from Tampa, FL and grow pentas to attract pollinators. They get woody if you let them shoot up without pruning or shaping. I grow the pinks because the reds seem to put on more woody growth than foilage/flower display. I cut mines back a 3rd of the height in early spring/ late winter (Florida is super mild to do that). I grow mines in part shade to even shade and have had luck with them. I have had them planted for 3 years now and they come back year after year. Fertilizing is kept to every 6 months and pruning/shaping every 2 months for desired look

    I love Pentas, I live in the greater Houston area, they do well in drought and flood. I have some in pots and in the ground. They tend to need more water when planted in pots.
