    Great content, I watched it all. I am also currently restoring an E31 850ci. I totally empathize with your calvary that there are always difficulties. There is a lot of useful information in your videos. Keep up the good work on your restoration. Greetings from Slovakia

    Once the engine is removed, and you probably don't want to do it again. One problem with these engines is stuck oil rings, you should definitely check them when the engine is off, piston ring kits are available (goetze) and they are not very expensive. When the engine is detached, it is worth at the same time changing the seals of the asc unit and at the same time servicing the brake booster and brake master cylinder. When the motor is off, the ventilation fan is also easy to change, greetings E31 owner from Finland. I've watched all your videos, you're a tough guy, good job. Best regards, Jukka

    Hi Steve, brilliant video, it certainly made me somewhat pleased I did pass it on. I used to say if money were no object, I would like to have permanently kept the car but from what I can see it would have had to have been in a showroom. One thing for you is that the wipers were having a problem through lack of use and I believe they have stopped working. With all the space and access, I suggest you might look at them while the area is clear. All the best and massive congratulations for all the serious work you are doing. Alan. PS Don’t forget the wipers.

    Good work Steve. Just three days ago we pulled out an M52 out of an E39. Excited how easy it is now to work on the engine, but the real challenge will be to get it back in place. :)

    Don’t beat yourself up over not pulling the engine originally. But, you now know cylinder leak down testing of any project car is a must, and you won’t make that mistake again.

    CRITICAL...CRITICAL...CRITICAL...💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
    Just a thought....for the M70 V12 you MUST use the correct spark plugs and correct leads and the doughnuts on HT leads 6 & 12 must be the right way round.
    1. ALL Spark Plugs MUST be 1k ohm spark plugs, the NGK BKR6EK 1K (often 1R)...nothing else will work.
    2. HT leads...must be the correct BMW ones for the signal to be relayed to the doughnuts.
    3. Doughnut MUST the right way round on leads 12 & 6, with the nose facing towards the Spark Plug
    The ht leads are copper in the m70, the resistance is in the end connectors which is how they all have the same resistance but different lengths
    Your symptoms seem to match EXACTLY what happens if these are not ALL correct....
    ENGINE STARTS...then after 2 seconds it stops.
    Check out this video...th-cam.com/video/bCctewUmVP0/w-d-xo.html for a full explanation...
    Also if the coil is replaced with an MSD Hugh Power type then you can use just about any plugs you like.
    HOPE THIS HELPS....!!!!

    Hey Steve and all fans
    I recall that you at some point mentioned that there is a place in Germany you can get your DME and EML units checked and rebuilt. Can anyone tell me where that is and how much it costs? 🙂

  • @DY5L3X1C
    @DY5L3X1C ปีที่แล้ว

    I dont think taking the heads off for refurbishing will fix it. I also changed the valve stem seals on my m73 e38, my valves werent the easiest to move either but the timing was slightly off too. I think you should adjust your timing or atleast check that the engine is in time and then rebuild or purchase a new fuel pump. M539 restorations has some great clips on working with the e31 fuel pumps, best of luck

    Came across your channel a year or two ago. Enjoyed the videos but did not watch all of them through. Have come across your channel again and am getting a lot out of it. Any BMW video now is going to be compared to M539, and it is hard to match his production quality. I am liking the pace and structure of your videos though. They are fun to watch, and I like the 'hanging out in the garage' feel of them. Good like with the E31.

    I feel the issues is timing, or electrical…I would think you could get that 12 cyl to function smoothly….the basic 12 cyl engine is known to be very robust mechanically ..it’s the plastic rubber electric stuff that goes south. Do you have a good bmw tech to provide input.

    I know you've spent like $10k on this project so far and (hopefully not) have to spend thousands more to restore it completely but with the engine and transmission out, is there any way you could get a manual transmission for this car? I had the pleasure of driving an 850i with manual transmission and it was amazing. I can't imagine the 4 speed automatic being anywhere near as good as the manual. If you can't, that's okay.
    I want to once again commend you on your hard work and attention to detail and I love your channel, particularly your camera work and how you explain everything in detail. Good luck with everything and I can't wait for the next video and can't WAIT to see you driving this car.

    • @stevesbmwbarn5706
      @stevesbmwbarn5706  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind words, I'm thinking of doing similar, there are a few manual transmission options outside of the original NLA parts, will have to decide what the best option is.

      You are right since the automatic transmission is not the original one. So the swap toward a manuel transmission is a good idea.

  • @JohanLocke
    @JohanLocke ปีที่แล้ว

    Great work man. But I wonder isn't it easier to hoist the engine out? Than you just had to loosen the 2 engine and the 2 transmission mounts.
    Also, since you're this far. I would consider going for a M73 hybrid swap. That basicly means getting a M73 block with your M70 heads. Should be good for about 350hp with a good chipset. That is my plan anyway should my M70 ever give out.
    Greetings from another E31 owner.

    I have a car with an identical engine. 1988 750iL with an electrical issue preventing starting. After sixteen years of failing, I am doing a temporary retreat via LS swap. At least you have a garage to work on yours. My car is stranded 36 miles from home for now. Best wishes.

  • @mikehewitt6484
    @mikehewitt6484 ปีที่แล้ว

    These engines are very robust, but they do have an Achilles heel with the timing components as they wear. One side of your engine could be out of time. The section of video from the arrival of the car would point to this. If you have the correct timing tools, you can check this during disassembly. Even a stretched chain can make a very erratic running engine. Just a suggestion. It will be far easier to check now the engine is out.
    Keep up your enthusiasm. Sometimes it is beneficial to walk away for a few hours. Fault finding can be very frustrating until you get that Eureka moment 😂
