    12+ hour shifts. No weekends. That's life in the hospitality industry in General. It's no wonder so many of them drink so much.

    Thank you for telling the truth.Brfore I become a Canadian Citizen, I was a Slave Cook on the ship from Eastern Europe.On U.S.P.H. days, I had to work sometimes from 7 am to 12:00 am.In Canada I invested in my education and thankfully I am in a proffesion that pays way better in a human work environment and deserved workers benefits. I love Canada.

      @@JSHIPLIFE We cannot change too much , but at least with this truthful information others get help and dig more deeply before they decide to work on a Cruise Ship. At my time when I started, this information was not available, I wouldn't do that work if I had it. Instead, I would pursue a different career like I finally did in Canada and live and work like a human , not like slave, always I heard :"...you will get warning for this or that....or go home....or hurry up....hurry up.....", or the fridge was cleaner than their mama's fridge and sometimes some a hole "....hmmm, you need to clean again...."

    Your videos are most valuable because you talk about aspects of ship life that so many persons have always wondered about. Excellent idea. This particular video however, was a bit too general and not enough specifics as you sought to educate your viewers on "work hours" aboard the ship. For instance, you mentioned that you work 2 days per week but that never actually tell your viewers the total hours those 2 work days actually entailed. It also was not clear if you are the only one with a "2 day" work week or if everyone within the entertainment department works only 2 days per week as well.
    Maybe you could consider listing each department and then specifically reference their respective department working hours. In this way, prospective cruise ship workers would get a clearer picture of whatever department they have an interest. Interestingly I found that you were more specific when responding to viewers in the comment section. Overall I love your presentation and look forward to seeing more of your videos.

    I’ve only cruised twice, both on NCL. All the employees seem so happy and like they really enjoy their jobs; room stewards, washy washy people, etc.... are they truly as happy as they seem or are they just trying to put up a good appearance? Seems with such long hours they would be burnt out. I do hope that they are as happy as they seem to be.

    As a passenger on many cruise ships-I cruise 90% Royal Caribbean..I have had lots of conversations with various staff on the ships from restaurant, bartenders, servers, casino dealers and stateroom attendants. Its not uncommon for instance to see food servers work in multiple locations at various parts of the day. They do work most workers (excluding contract entertainers and I think poker/blackjack dealers and maybe even retail folks) LOOOOONG hours. I had heard-although not sure-that if they use the infirmary-that they have to pay. So out of those low paying employees-what kind of onboard expenses do they have to shell out for-for doctor care...dental..along those lines?

    It seems appalling that staff have to work such long hours, with little time off, for low pay and living in shared, cramped, accommodation when many of the passengers are wealthy and the cruise companies make millions of $ profit. Action should be taken worldwide to improve the situation.

    • @Suge212
      @Suge212 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For each ship, a cruise line has to pay staff, ship maintenance, fuel and so on. Not to mention the near billion dollar investment of every ship. If you do the math on all the overheads, I think it works out to under $200 profit per person, per cruise. Those are very tight margins considering your average cruiser spends around $1600. If they increase wages, the price of cruises goes up and the amount of cruisers goes down. This is why you see so many people from 3rd world countries working on cruise ships. For them, that smaller wage goes a lot further than it would for someone from a 1st world country. If wages are increased and cruise prices marked up, it could reduce the number of available jobs, putting a lot of people out of much needed work. No one's a prisoner on these ships and every employee made their choice to work there.

    Hi Justin! just found out about your channel and I'm loving it! but i'm kind of confused. you only have to work 7 days a week when it's a sea day? I mean, (i dont mean you, but your colleagues in the entertainment department) do you always get a day off when you're in a port day? ( or at least a few hours) because honestly, travelling the world it's probably one of the first reasons why people want to work on a cruise ship. But how are you gonna explore a new city if you're working 7 days a week? Idk I might have misunderstood what you've said, but i'd really like to understand this scheduling hours better!! Thanks xx

    • @JSHIPLIFE
      @JSHIPLIFE  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I only worked 2-3 days a week.l but most of the entertainers do typically work 5-7 days a week. Most of the time entertainment does get Port Days off since most guest or off the ship.. Some departments are obviously more lucky than other when it comes to getting Port time off so you have to make sure that you do your research!

Would you be able to upload the application process how to and who to contact to get the ball rolling , thank you i look forward to your future videos

    It's not your "fault" that you've been given a contract that suits that type of work onboard. But yeah. I agree. It's a bit too harsh. The argument for them having free place to stay and food is required by how they are living in my opinion. Not working half the day all days a week. But oh well... it's the money business after all. Like all other :/

      @@JSHIPLIFE 1000 a month when you come from a country where perhaps 200 a month is "good" or even 300 a YEAR! 1000? That's big money. But for us American or from Western Europe, (I have dual nationality french American and also speak a decent Spanish) it's not so great, but hey if you're single, have no obligations, you can save most of that. No house note. No car note or insurance, no food bills and you're in good physical shape and faily young, why not. Sounds good to me. I'm old but I would have done it if I had known such work existed. Been on many cruises and I love it. Would live on the ship if I could afford it.
      By the way do you have any idea what the cost would be for 1 person to live on ship constantly. (I've sold my house and retired, 72 yrs old and in decent physical condition, no obvious limitations - no break dancing that's for sure).
      Just found your channel and I love it. Funny but I don't like royal carabbean.

      Anne Sylvest You’re 100% right this isn’t a bad gig! Especially in a country where USD has high value! Are you sure you don’t breakdance? Lol How long are you talking about living on the ship for because you would be paying per week per cruise unfortunately and that could really start to stack up lol Thank you so much for your support! It’s very much appreciated!
